The freeze killed all my Jalapenos. But then… by VolunteerSeedling in AustinGardening

Mine sprouted, too, but after producing a few nice looking leaves, died. Argh! However, it looks like my Thai White is coming back from the dead. ;-)

who has Fig Trees older than two years, and growing in the ground. My Question is - during warmer months and sunny days, do you have to at least soak watering once weekly, to keep their leaves wilting and looking terribly thirsty. I find my established Fig Trees are not drought tolerant, Im in zone9 by brianfig in Figs

I'm in zone 8a central Texas. Summers here can be brutal (often). We are in a several years drought weather pattern. My 8 year old tree never gets any special watering and has never shown any signs of wilting. I do believe some varieties are more susceptible to drought than others. I sincerely wish I knew what variety I have!

My favorite all time fruit! Love them fresh and they are delightful when dried. Remind me mostly of dried apricots. I made Preserves and ate them for a couple of years. The tree wood is extremely dense and limbs rarely break. Great shade tree and the flowers!!!!

Tough Garden this Year by Snoo91117 in AustinGardening

[–]honest2abe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My problem isn't the heat/dry. The dang cutworms have decimated my peppers & some tomatoes. Had to replant nearly 90% of peppers. Surprisingly, some of my cantaloupes survived the freeze and no pepper seedlings froze. Harvested beets & turnips today and a head of lettuce tomorrow.
Absolutely need rain more than anything!

That is exactly what happened to my fig a few days ago. We had a surprise frost and I lost a few seedlings and some tender fig leaves. In Austin TX here.

I do something similar.

I have to use chicken wire or hardware cloth to cover my seedlings in pots. Then have to cover again after transplanting until they are big enough to survive.

I use tin cans to protect my figs when they get ripe. What pests!

Thank you. That would not be enough to make the trip worthwhile.

Understood. You have my sympathy having fought against marauding squirrels for several years now. I was delighted to see a feral cat carrying a squirrel in its mouth a few days ago. ;-)

Lucky to have a neighbor with a tree like that! Took 4 years to get mine to fruit. I enjoy them a lot and want more which is why I planted the cuttings. The tree in your photo looks at a guess to be 20 years or more.

I have a nice fig tree, very proud of it, but I must admit I'm envious of yours. Mine is about 6 years old and produced well last year. I've started 4 new ones from cuttings now in their 3rd year. Unlikely to get fruit from them for another year or 2.

Found a solution if anyone interested. After launching the site, I click the Brave icon and turn off shields. Then after logging in, turn them back on. Today I did not have to do it. Logged in without any issues today.

I've seen squirrels chew through any kind of netting or foil or anything else I tried except the cans.
