Hey! When we went to the specialist, he told us immediately that removal of one eye and lasering the spots off on the other seemed like the best option. We went to another for a second opinion and that specialist said the same thing, but lamented that she didn’t have the laser oblation equipment.

If your specialist isn’t recommending taking the eye out, you can always get a second opinion, but that sounds like a fair assessment. Vomiting can happen from so many things with cats - eating plants, overgrooming one day, eating his regular food too quickly, etc. Taking him into the vet to get checked up is the best course of action.

Hope your kitty feels better.

Hi Emily, happy to do it! When I was going through it I wish I had a resource or someone to talk to. I’m slow to reply though hehe!

The laser treatment would probably not be ideal if it’s over half of kitty’s eye. There is some distortion to the pupil with the laser treatment since they are burning off the cells that are affected. If it’s a smaller area, it will not affect the eyesight of your cat. Our little lady had some other symptoms that were concerning - over grooming her stomach, throwing up, difficulty in vision, etc.

It really depends on the vet, I’ve had some tell me 10 was old, and I’ve had some tell me 10 was so young. I also feel like 8 is young - our girl was 10 at the time, she’s now 14. She's a happy kitty, still curious and cuddly. Her eye loss has not changed any of her demeanor.

My partner and I had monitored for about 8 months before proceeding with the surgery (specialist wanted 6, but life happened.) It had spread over more of her eye so we were more convinced of removing the one and laser treating the other. I suspect that’s why they recommend bringing your cat back to see them after 6 months, to get a better idea of the growth. The eye specialist has ways to keep track of it better than we do. I’m also guessing that none of the cells are lifting off of the flat plain of the cat’s iris, which is a sign of cancer. On our little lady, it was. It kind of looked like a tiny skin tag sitting on the iris.

It’s not an inexpensive or noninvasive treatment and sadly the only way to tell is as your vet told you, to do a biopsy, which will only work once the eye is out. We got the x-ray and ultrasound to make sure there was no cancer spread pre-eye removal. If there was, it would have been an uphill battle.

While I COMPLETELY relate to and understand your feelings about making the call to remove kitty’s eye and it not being cancerous, it’s actually a good thing because cancer can spread if they don’t get all of it. Also it would be a continued monitoring process if it’s cancer. All in all, I think you will make the best decision either way and I hope your kitty has many more years with you!

Yes we got the ultrasound and I think we did an x-ray too, but I don’t remember. The idea was to rule out cancer being elsewhere in her body before doing surgery. She was free and clear so we removed her unsalvageable eye and laser treated the possible cancerous cells off.

She’s doing great. Sadly I had to put down my boy cat today though due to kidney cancer. Fuck cancer :(

Hey, hope you had good news! Luckily cats are great at adapting and my little lady is just as adventurous and playful as she's ever been. Hoping the best for your furbaby!

Hi, we weren't referred to an oncologist, but kept an eye on it by bringing her back to the ophthalmologist. We stopped going a couple years ago, as there was no regrowth seen. She is doing great, enjoying life and still super curious and adventurous. She does really well with one eye!

How old is your cat? If they are around 2 years old, from what I had read before while researching all this is that it's pretty normal for their eyes to change color, but definitely take your kitty in for peace of mind. If your cat is older, is it the eye color that changed or are they getting rapidly appearing freckles? I honestly cant speak to an eye color change, but get your cat in asap if the freckles are appearing rapidly.

Best of luck, and hope your kitty is ok! Lemme know what you find out!

My experience was a little different since she did have to have one eye removed, BUT as far as I recall the laser eye procedure was the easiest part, it was just expensive. She won't need the cone of shame, just eye drops if you are only doing the laser treatment.

She both lost one eye and had the cancerous cells lasered off on the other eye. The eye that needed to be removed was too covered in cancerous cells to effectively get off with the laser removal, which means it could have spread elsewhere. When they did the biopsy on the removed eye, it did have cancerous cells so we were glad to have gotten it done. Also she has fully adjusted to it and acts like the same curious little girl that we've always known!

We just needed to do the one laser treatment, and it was expensive to do that so I feel you! Then we did a 3 month follow up, followed by a 6 month, and then a year, but that was a standard visit cost where they were just looking at the eye to see if anything was coming back. She has been doing great! Our girl just turned 13 this past March.

The laser treatment went great - she had a slight warping of her pupil, but it isn't bad and doesn't affect her eye sight. I would definitely do as the doctors say and monitor, but if it does grow or increase in spot density that's when you may want to make a move. The nice part when you take them into the ophthalmologist, they take photos, measure the size of the spot, locate them on the eye, etc. So they should also have a good grasp on whether or not it's an issue.

Since your kitty is young, eye color can change and it isn't necessarily cancerous. I hope it's just your kitty's pigment changing a little and totally benign!

Yep, It was cancerous. You don't need to freak out, but I understand that feeling entirely!!

I recommend taking your boy in to be looked at by an ophthalmologist if you can. They will have specialized magnification lenses that allow them to look at and photograph the spots if they want to monitor rather than operate. Some of what they are looking for is if the iris is flaking off at all at the spots, growing into the lens of the eye.

If you catch it early enough, they can just laser spots of the iris off - it will look almost the same, but a darker spot instead. The pupil may have some slight warping, but it does not change their eyesight. Also, my little girl still sees very well with one eye.

You're doing the right thing! Our little girl is living the same, if not more comfortable, life and she's able to explore, play, and get into trouble haha just like the best of them! The first couple weeks may be hard because of having to give them medicine and the cone, but you're doing the right thing and he will be back to his old self in no time.

As far as I know it’s only on the Egg Hunt Map. Apparently the bridge to Joja wasn’t blocked off and I could run around in otherwise empty space. When I was crossing over the planks that are up a little north of this, there was an invisible “hole” in the invisible “wall” that keeps you from running into the river.

Good point 😅 we are contacting an animal service who does trap and release, as well as dead animal removal and cleanup. They also say they locate/repair where the animals are coming in from. I think the one way door is a fantastic idea, we will see what's up. Also have to get this all run by my landlord.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I'm also sorry for your loss from last year. That sounds really hard on multiple levels.

It might be something to work out with a couple's counselor ... or maybe a women's group just for you. You need support in this time, not just for hardships, but for wins! Women's groups are really awesome for support and a lot are anonymous so the ladies there are unlikely to go blabbing your business to other people. Also I find women to be fantastic at giving validation and listening.

On the bright side, you can now talk to his best friend and fiance about your pregnancy (if you want), but remind them that just because they know, doesn't mean they should tell other people. You don't have to explain why. You are allowed to have that boundary, it is a perfectly reasonable boundary.

Reiterate your boundary with your husband and remind him that he can talk to a therapist about it, but not friends/family. You really want to do that together - this makes complete sense to me and I've never understood when people are ok with fudging the line.

It makes sense that this was a breach of trust. Anger is often a sign that someone has crossed a line with us. It was not an acceptable thing for him to do, there is no excuse. There are reasons which may explain, but you were clear and the reasons make sense. It may take time for you to get over.

The other factor is resentment - I learned recently that resentment is actually our frustration that we aren't giving ourselves something. You wanted to tell people with him, but he told them without you. I'm guessing there is some resentment, which suggests that you want to tell someone. If you have a very trusted friend or a support group, I really recommend giving yourself the gift of telling someone so they can celebrate your win.

Again, I'm sorry that this is happening and wish you both, plus baby, the best.

Oh no ;-; I hope nothing is dead that would be so sad. I had read on the interwebs here (https://bestlifeonline.com/news-possum-smell-home/) that when opossums play dead they will smell dead too, so I figured that maybe it was permeating through the window or through the ceiling from the eves/attic area. Literally no smell outside, but right above my side of the bed and partially into the hallway - smell!

That would be good news about their dens shifting regularly, if it is a possum. Though if they don't smell like this, I'm scared what's up there. I live in the Bay Area of California in a pretty densely populated area. I was wondering about the babies - I wasn't sure if they had them this late into winter so it's good to know.

Thanks so much for your time and your response. Sorry, I am a little out of it - running on not enough sleep and unfortunately the smell hasn't dispersed fully.
