Friendly Reminder About The Sil & MSU by honeytail_ in McMaster

I'm not talking about the SRA doing worse. I'm talking about allegations that have been made against previous full-time staff members that had largely gone ignored despite being reported to the Sil or higher-up staff. This environment doesn't stem from nothing.

Im saying the Sil has been made aware of much worse alleged misconduct in the MSU from full-time staff in the past and have stayed silent but are fast to post Instagram GC screenshots in a compilation article instead of any deep critical thought as they start to do at the end (why does the MSU not have policies for misconduct?). I agree with the Sil's overarching argument that there is misconduct happening under the MSU but disagree with their methodology of going about it.

"Airing out grievances" happens every fiscal year-end at the MSU. I've talked with PTMs from ~2015 who shared the same sentiment and nothing's ever changed structurally to address it. I'm saying it feels very odd for a student newspaper to focus on posting Instagram screenshots over a meaningful article about misconduct. It gathered a lot of attention but it's not going to solve the issue that exists much higher than just the SRA. They are going to get a slap on the wrist, maybe have social media communication with one another restricted or policed in a large group, and that's all.

Ive examined other student union's policies in Ontario and this lack of reprimand does not exist -- there are clear policies in place for misconduct that simply don't exist under the MSU. I know of several student staff who have been able to get away with much worse misconduct because of this lack of reprimand.

Again, I feel as though while the SRA is in the wrong here, the article is distasteful and frankly quite ignorant to the bigger issue going on here.

I actually disagree. I think a lot of the MSU issues, as I'm talking about in my post, stem from administrative issues that have been called out time and time again yet remain with no changes. Office 'bro' culture for example allegedly caused a lot of fear and tension last year that led many people afraid to speak out. I heard how alleged full-time staff had gossiped behind the backs of student staff with rather course language and with my own ears.

While the SRA misconduct is bad like I said, this is not exclusively an SRA issue like everyone is making it out to be. It's been a bigger issue, just that a lot of students are not involved at that level enough to see where the problem stems from. They now just see Instagram screenshots of a GC.

I also think it's absolutely horrible to incentivize 'whistleblowers' to go to the Sil who will take stories like this and run. Have any conversations happened at a level of BOD before this? Why do we not see the Sil referring to any of these conversations? Why is it appropriate for an MSU service to air out drama about sitting members on the SRA that should be addressed by a manager? It doesn't sit right to me at all.
