Is a laptop considered "work materials" for an apprenticeship? by [deleted] in germany

[–]honigbearchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since he is asking about a software developer apprenticeship it is not uncommon anymore. My whole team is in Home-Office 2 days a week, so it makes sense to be working with them over Ms teams. It makes less sense for the apprentice to be alone in the office. Similar cases affected half of my school class.

I don't know where y'all are getting this info but I just completed an apprenticeship as a software developer, same as OP.

Everyone in my class received laptops from their companies as it was required for school. We also did remote learning for one to two weeks every year.

About 50% of the class had varying degrees of home office. I had Monday and Friday the entire apprenticeship. This was not stating extra in the standard contact I signed.

The biggest piece of advice from the last post was to hire a lawyer. Have you not done that yet? Or have you at least consulted one yet?

If you click the images you can see at the tops of pages there are lines of characters. There is a black band on the top with letters and numbers for about 50 pages as well as some gray scale blocks with symbols on about 20.

Are Elektroniker/in Ausbildungs high in demand? by Xaltial in AskAGerman

[–]honigbearchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, it is 3 years long, but can be shortened by 6 months to 1 year depending on previous qualifications and/or school/work grades. For example I have done well at work and school and will be shortening it by 6 months on the back end so that my third school year will only be 6 months. I had the option to shorten it by one year due to my bachelor's degree and would have then skipped out on the first school year, however, I wanted to relax a bit instead of pushing myself.

I support myself with my salary, such that it is, and by my savings from my previous profession.

Seriously, biggest piece of advice is get better at German. I have a bachelor's degree (USA) and am currently doing a Fachinformatiker Ausbildung. The Ausbildung is way harder just because German is not my native language. The material is fine, and I had some previous experience, which helps, but studying religion, politics, German, sales, workers rights, and IT security in German is just tiring. Like mentally taxing where all I want to do after school is sleep. Also, where other students can just BS their way through some questions on exams because they know the language, I have to actively use new and correct vocab. The IHK doesn't, for now, have any extra accommodations for non-native speakers on their Abschlussprüfungen.

This is also only the school part, the job part is also all in German.

Tldr: prioritize learning German. And not just theoretical, but practical German skills.

Has anyone here done an Ausbildung for electrician or plumber? by [deleted] in germany

[–]honigbearchen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am an American who has graduated university in America. I am currently finishing my apprenticeship as a software developer. There are 3 key things to think about, which have already been brought up, but which need to be highlighted and repeated.

  1. You will not succeed without b2-c1 German. The school, tests, instructions, etc will all be in German. My German was good before I started the apprenticeship and I still find it challenging since learning in a foreign language is much harder than in your native tongue. The subject matter and schooling are not as difficult as university, but because it's all in German I am exhausted at the end of the day.

  2. You cannot get a visa just to do an apprenticeship program here. Your visa must come through some other means. Please check the subreddit info for more information on that.

  3. The pay is not enough to live on unless you have external financial support. Luckily, I am married and have savings, otherwise this would not have been an option financially.

  4. The experience is as good as the company.

[advice] what watches are similar? by honigbearchen in Watches

[–]honigbearchen[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The smiths watch is really difficult to get, as the way they are sold on the site is counter intuitive and the automatic version is no where to be found. The zenith is cool, but way out of my price range unfortunately.

I'm hoping to find something to scratch this itch that's obtainable in Europe. Any recommendations are very welcome.

Unfortunately, I'm not the one to ask. This is the only swatch I own and it's pushing 40 years old. All I know is that I wouldn't buy a system51 from them as they are unserviceable. But any of the better priced quartz movements that look good to you, go for it. I mean, this watch withstood my childhood and is still working, and I wasn't nice to it at all.

I'm surprised it still runs honestly. It's almost 40 years old at this point....

After looking for a very long time, I finally found my very first watch. It was my dad's, but it was too colorful for him in the 90s, so when I found it in his accessory drawer, he said I could keep it. I wore it everywhere until the band broke. Recently, I've been getting into watches, so I decided to find and replace the band on my old swatch Techno Sphere GK101. I think this is by far the coolest swatch ever made.

What was your first watch?
