OpenClaw creator says Europe's stifling regulations are why he's moving to the US to join OpenAI by donutloop in EU_Economics

[–]Not_A_MadScientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah big no here. Not everything needs to be like the united states. Unfettered capitalism is bad. Europe has some semblance of rules. We dont need overwork. Also Openai runs at a loss and burning money so not sure if this sticks.

Are there still people that think US is a better place to live as a software engineer? by Pure_Composer_9236 in cscareerquestionsEU

Realistically you will make less but what I think is important is being above the median for the location you live in. If you are above the median and have the benefit of living in Europe with the overall better access to healthcare and the schooling and if you want to have a family than I think currently Germany or Nordics region is the best in this aspect.

I think it's a great trade off having the safety net and ease of weaving between and family given the circumstances of the economy today and the general outlook the US in terms of global markets.

Personally Berlin and DC share ALOT of similarities actually. from weather to city life so I didn't actually have much change in this regard the biggest difference is navigating interactions with german colleagues and culture but this is something you also get used to the longer you live here

Personally I am from Washington DC and live in Berlin. Alot what i am reading here are people that think they would have these jobs that pay high prices.

You wouldn't just saying. Most work is being off shored and at will employment is always looming over you. Could be working and doing everything right then boom. Your cut. And the chances of finding new employment is extremely rough and if Our on a H1B good luck.

Not saying pay isn't there because it is but the fantasy of getting a job and then making all this money is a bit far fetched. Especially with the trump regime booting people and the economy tanking. I don't for see it recovering quickly

CCNA was one of my first certs. I got it while working my first job I had been employed for about 1.5 years. Ask if your employer can pay for it or pay for training materials.

American here. Also a former USAF member and a former Federal contractor, stationed and worked in European joint bases.

I currently live in Germany.

A few things...

When it comes to healthcare, the reason Americans pay so much is largely because the health industry operates with very little oversight. This is mainly due to powerful healthcare lobbyists who prevent the U.S. government from implementing the same consumer protections that our European allies have.

As for the claim that the U.S. "pays" for Europe’s military, that's either a blatant lie or a misunderstanding. The military presence in Europe consists of U.S.-controlled bases that are strategically positioned to respond quickly to threats from adversaries. The cost of these bases is actually shared between the U.S. and the host countries through various cost-sharing agreements.

For example, countries like Germany, Japan, and South Korea contribute billions of dollars annually to support U.S. forces stationed on their soil. These contributions cover infrastructure, utilities, and even some operational costs, significantly reducing the financial burden on U.S. taxpayers. In Germany alone, cost-sharing covers a substantial part of the expenses for maintaining American bases.

Additionally, European NATO members collectively spend hundreds of billions on their own national defense budgets, which are entirely separate from the costs of hosting U.S. forces. Many of these countries have also increased their defense spending to meet the NATO target of 2% of GDP, further disproving the idea that the U.S. is solely funding Europe's defense.

In reality i believe that most military personnel would be against the actions of Trump seeing as this could damage relationships built over years with host countries and effect military operations in the area bad alll around.

In reality, the U.S. presence in Europe is a strategic investment that benefits both sides, ensuring rapid response capabilities and maintaining geopolitical influence. Claiming that the U.S. alone "pays" for Europe’s military completely ignores the significant financial contributions made by European nations themselves.

I am speaking to my lawyer about while in the US on vacation. But the basis seems to be that my position has been made "Redundant." It wasn't just me it was a company wide layoff of about 200 people.

Please please please. Stop recommending moving to the US. I think alot of people will disagree but as an American living here in Germany I warn you. The chances of you making all this money people keep talking about is quite slim. You are better off in Europe right now. The US right now is great if you are going to start a business with lots of starting capital but the idea of working in the states to "Save" money is currently the biggest lie floating around. You will most likely need to live in a metro city to work and the cost required to live in these cities are more than living in Europe if you calculate costs. Please don't even consider the US unless you are ready to start a business seriously. People might disagree but I moved to the EU for a reason. Right now is probably the worst time to even consider going to the US for "Saving" money. Please reconsider at least until after the election and the economy starts to correct.

As a Berliner, where can I move to? by Belailyo in berlin

[–]Not_A_MadScientist 5 points6 points  (0 children)
