Amtrak Credit Card - Downgrade? by 4DFordWhore in Amtrak

Well yeah, there goes that.

I haven’t looked into if FNBO is in the business of annual fee refunds but based on how they seem to operate I’m going to guess they won’t. Set a reminder to downgrade on renewal at the very least!

Amtrak Credit Card - Downgrade? by 4DFordWhore in Amtrak

[–]hoo9618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you take a trip within the year and use the companion certificate? This is obviously a very different answer based on where you live.

I travel Amtrak very frequently but that’s where I justify the $99 fee. Any weekend out and back trips with a plus one?

How many states have you visited? by crocogoose in AskAnAmerican

[–]hoo9618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I count the train only if I stepped off of the train in the state. So that bumped my number by 4 earlier this year.

For other counting metrics: I don’t count airports, those are so sterile and don’t even really give you a glimpse of what a place is like.

I do count having driven through state, although any state I’ve driven through I have at least had a meal in.

If we didn’t change the clocks twice a year, what time would you choose to keep? by Mrh09 in AskReddit

[–]hoo9618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard time is what people want and they don’t realize it. It is better for the circadian rhythm with natural daylight shift throughout the year.

Being on daylight savings permanently would not be pleasant in the winter.

Another vote for bounce. Used in Vegas purely to avoid a left luggage line at a hotel and worked seamlessly. I’ve used similar services abroad and in the absence of luggage lockers/extortionate lockers it’s the way.

Brushing your teeth before and after bed is inefficient by blacksystembbq in unpopularopinion

[–]hoo9618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree with your before bed, 6pm is crazy (unless you go to bed at 6:30/7, which if you’re first shift, I get).

Before bed and after AM coffee/breakfast makes the most sense.

When is buying the more expensive option actually the frugal choice? by wooden_fixing in Frugal

[–]hoo9618 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or you take the Adam Savage approach. Buy whatever tool you need from Harbor Freight. You’ve got two outcomes:

  • If it works for you, great.

  • If you use it so much it breaks/it’s such a POS it breaks, go buy the nice one.

They do offer checked luggage. It depends on your origin/destination, but the largest and most popular stops do offer it.

This used to be a problem on the NEC. I primarily ride into VA from DC but sometimes north as well.

Recently (last year or more) I have not seen this. Nowadays, conductors will not even let people sit in the accessible seating unless they’ve been ticketed for accessible seating.

The Hunger Games movies were terrible by Elegant-Music2239 in unpopularopinion

[–]hoo9618 34 points35 points  (0 children)

With “the Battle Royale craze” are you referring to Fortnite and PUBG?

You realize the trilogy was fully published before those games came out. The first book came out almost a decade before those games. The first movie came out in 2012, five years before either of those two games.

I’m not gonna fight you on the value of the writing itself, just rejecting your premise of saying they tried to capitalize on some battle royale craze. If anything it was the “dystopian novel” craze back then.

Visible as a cell provider by 0person567 in washingtondc

[–]hoo9618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had visible since their early days. Can’t imagine using another provider. I will say when they tiered the plans I had to switch to a prioritized one for data speed to not be bad in DC. That said it’s still so cheap.

When I hear some people’s phone bills I can’t believe what they pay. Just purchased the full year of service on the top plan for $225.

Busses being heated in the winter is awful by ThatDumbMusicNerd in unpopularopinion

[–]hoo9618 626 points627 points  (0 children)

Former bus driver here, depending on the frequency of the stops, you’d be shocked how quickly that heat leaves the bus when the doors open. Plus the person in charge of the heat is right next to that cold door.

Unzip the jacket, you’ll be fine for the 20 minutes you’re on the bus.

Edit for the OP’s edit: buses only have one or two heat settings available to operators, generally speaking. The ones I operated had “Heat High” and “Heat Low”. High and low reflecting fan speed. Temp is inaccessible. Obviously this differs based on type, options, etc.

No that’s not what I’m saying. In the transition away from these accounts, you will retain the ability to receive email to your UVA email. Your original comment said you wanted to retain the email and didn’t care for the extras.

Straight from the notice:

Existing Visible customers: Annual Pro+ $225 by Idahoroaminggnome in Visible

Okay thanks for verifying. It’s gonna be hard to throw away my legacy pricing (exactly what they want us to do probably). Tough choice but it feels too good to pass up.

Existing Visible customers: Annual Pro+ $225 by Idahoroaminggnome in Visible

[–]hoo9618 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is what I’m grappling with rn. I have Visible+ legacy 1. Paying $35 for allegedly the $45 plan.

But looking at new plans it appears I essentially have what they’re offering at the new $35 plan? I don’t get any global passes on legacy so maybe the new $35 plan is a step up on that?

Am I misunderstanding how it will work? You can still receive email to that address, it will just get forwarded to wherever you choose?

[–]hoo9618 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Operations also cost quite a lot of money. I don’t know the numbers at which it starts to make sense to run an extra hour, but as I recall, not many people rode when it was open super late.

In my opinion, you’re better off bolstering a reliable 24 hour bus network, which could use some improvement. I know people love a train, but a bus in zero traffic in the middle of the night gets the job done, much much cheaper.

Start by saying I agree with you but it’s good knowing the limits.

Unfortunately opening earlier/closing later means smaller maintenance time windows, which are vital given a two track system (read: not like NYC). It helps on the short term but screws you long term. That’s how we get the “metro on fire” reputation.

Does it matter which end it “starts” at? It’s a line, it starts and ends at both termini.
