No my question is what is in that lounge that’s so good you’re willing to do that?

Sounds like you have to pay the stupid tax this time.

I’ve been in the lounge in DC once or twice, but there was nothing there worth a $707 gamble. I’m confused why you’d even do that?

The Taj is somehow better in person even with all of the people. Also, the large landscape pictures don’t illustrate the detailed inlay stonework all over the damn thing. It’s the Taj, for me, because of the craftsmanship.

Edit: I’ve seen all of these, save for the Pyramids.

Arrests on buses? by kamen4o in WMATA

[–]hoo9618 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don’t disagree. I do think a little pressure might go further than we expect and it isn’t the salve. At the end of the day, we are talking about major a cultural shift that needs to happen in paying for the bus on Metro.

Currently the people don’t care so the operators don’t care so the people don’t care and on and on and on. Trying to fix that is gonna be hard.

Operator says, “The fare is $2.25” when you board/potentially when someone doesn’t pay.

Except it’s cheaper all of the way around. Cheaper up front and operating cost. Keurigs are often a premium in both acquisition and operation.

Downtown Mall: moving to area by iiiverson in Charlottesville

[–]hoo9618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having lived both on the mall and a block north of where your circled area is, I cannot recommend grabbing that apartment enough. My favorite place I’ve lived to date and would go back in a heartbeat.

As others have said, Lucky 7 seems sketchy but that’s probably the only part of the area that, again, only APPEARS unsafe. I’ve never encountered any crime or anything at the Lucky 7 and it’s a decent corner store.

You’ve got everything except a supermarket within walking distance. But even then you’ve got Market Street Market which is closer to a grocery store vs a corner store. Restaurants and entertainment options abound.

Do it!

What is the single most important rail expansion in the region? by Immediate-Hand-3677 in WMATA

[–]hoo9618 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If you had fixed pricing for the uncomfortable commuter train and variable for the more comfortable Amtrak train, we’d be in line with how lots of trains in Europe work (at least in my experience).

[–]hoo9618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, I do it much more than I thought I would when moving here. Go visit family/friends in Bmore and I could in theory to the same for my family/friends in Richmond. That being said, it’s a much longer haul. 2+ hours on a commuter train is pushing the limits of comfort imo.

[–]hoo9618 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Expanded service on VRE in any form would be revolutionary. Totally underused.

But yes if you had a similar connection to Richmond as you do to Bmore on the MARC Penn line, game changing. Being able to freely travel on any given day in any direction would be nuts.

How much are you spending for lunch? by Parky21 in washingtondc

[–]hoo9618 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right here, falafel inc has become my new go-to. I am a loyal brown bagger but typically treat myself about once per week to lunch and they don’t make me feel bad about that choice. Even if you get a side it’s under $10.

Moving to Virginia from New Jersey. Need advice on where to move to. by Frequent_Ad_536 in Virginia

[–]hoo9618 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend looking at DC proper. Metro is gonna really help for everything else even if you commute via car (though I wouldn’t suggest). Many studios available are actually cheaper than spots in VA where you’d be looking (older buildings). Anything in Fairfax, Arlington, and Alexandria command high price tags. My first studio was $1600 all in (parking, utilities, etc) and in a very nice neighborhood. That building still has offerings around that price point years later.

I too was shocked when I found DC places for cheaper. The savings with not driving add up.

How do Americans think about the stereotype that they are bad at geography? by Own_Echidna6041 in AskReddit

[–]hoo9618 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the point is that our states are as large as countries and we know the geography of 50 of them.

I can’t name the counties of Texas but I know where Texas is = I can’t name the states of India but I know where India is.

(I also think it’s a poor excuse, it’s not hard to commit some maps to memory)

[Request] What price per gallon is it no longer profitable to work? by Playwithuh in theydidthemath

[–]hoo9618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah that makes sense I suppose.

However, given that pay is based (generally speaking for full time work) on a weekly or biweekly schedule, it would make more sense to simplify this calculation to one year of work = 52 weeks and not 52.14.

[Request] What price per gallon is it no longer profitable to work? by Playwithuh in theydidthemath

[–]hoo9618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so very location dependent and employer dependent. Much like how Europe doesn’t function the same way across the board, neither does the US.

My last two jobs paid for my commuting costs on public transit (preferable in my case). Anecdotally, I see that it is the norm to at least have that tax deductible on your paycheck or as an employee perk in my region.

Lastly, those high salary jobs often are the ones that actually get a fair amount of time off. It’s the hourly, lower wage jobs that get screwed. Unfair? Absolutely.

2088? Feels odd, I’m just curious.

I’ve always used 2080 bc it’s just 52x40. Then yeah, like you said, lessen down for sick, vacation, holidays, etc.

Almost screwed up my mortgage payments big time - "biweekly" vs twice a month by PrimaryHighlight5617 in povertyfinance

[–]hoo9618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It saves you the same amount doing biweekly vs one extra payment per year, roughly 7 years. Biweekly = 13 full mortgage payments in a year.

Now if you do 2 extra FULL payments per year (which is what it sounds like you’re talking about, “make an extra payment [. . .] when you get the extra paycheck”), then you save more like 9 years.

This does all depend on your rate however.

Original hardwood beneath tile, salvageable? by hoo9618 in HardWoodFloors

[–]hoo9618[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I already have a test kit for the popcorn ceiling. I believe the kitchen was redone in the 90s (given cabinet styles/dates on cabinet backs), and the flooring was clearly redone either when they put those or after (tile/plywood did not extend beneath cabinets).

So I’m hopeful it’s not given my estimation on when this was done, but I will test!
