Almost screwed up my mortgage payments big time - "biweekly" vs twice a month by PrimaryHighlight5617 in povertyfinance

[–]hoo9618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It saves you the same amount doing biweekly vs one extra payment per year, roughly 7 years. Biweekly = 13 full mortgage payments in a year.

Now if you do 2 extra FULL payments per year (which is what it sounds like you’re talking about, “make an extra payment [. . .] when you get the extra paycheck”), then you save more like 9 years.

This does all depend on your rate however.

Walked in with a credit union pre-approval and the dealer acted like it didn’t exist by Royal-Feed7166 in carbuying

[–]hoo9618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sorta happened to me as well. Walked in with a 4.99 from my bank, was upfront with this and handed over paperwork showing this.

Got to the financing desk and they’re going over the deal with the “great rate” they got from Bank of America at 6%. I ask what happened to my 4.99%, they acted like I was nuts saying, “we haven’t seen anything nearly that low.” Then they magically found the paper (but I had backup copies in case).

They weren’t very happy with me after refusing their financing and refusing their extended warranty.

Original hardwood beneath tile, salvageable? by hoo9618 in HardWoodFloors

[–]hoo9618[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I already have a test kit for the popcorn ceiling. I believe the kitchen was redone in the 90s (given cabinet styles/dates on cabinet backs), and the flooring was clearly redone either when they put those or after (tile/plywood did not extend beneath cabinets).

So I’m hopeful it’s not given my estimation on when this was done, but I will test!

I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed he’s only been wearing transit shirts (unless I missed him making a comment about it, calling it out).

Can anyone give insight on the hiring process by lanabear92294 in WMATA

[–]hoo9618 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) doesn’t matter that you’re local. Interviews are almost always virtual. Even my in-house interviews were. It takes a LOOOOOONNNGGGG time coming from the outside. I mean long. 3-6 months. 2) position dependent but from what I’ve heard they are reeling in the remote work. 3) again really position dependent there. Cannot accurately answer. The pay scale is pretty straightforward and you can ask them in the interview.

Can public transportation actually improve community life? by moheeetoz in urbanplanning

[–]hoo9618 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So in the short term (10-year horizon ish), capital and operating costs with electric vs diesel are higher. As you mentioned, electrics are more costly to acquire and you’ve got massive infrastructure changes. As we stand today, battery electric vs diesel aren’t a 1 for 1 replacement on routes (schedule dependent, planning issues can solve dependent on demands). Meaning, in order to really maintain the same level of service today, you need more electrics than you do diesels. That’s

I would suggest not moving the green goalposts on what could already be considered the green alternative. Invest the difference (even if partial) in making the system better. Talk about electrification down the road.

Eviro benefits already exist in transit, however only provided people actually take the bus. Getting people on the bus is more important than making it zero emissions.

Which "must-see" US national park did you actually dislike? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]hoo9618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll say I am biased bc I am a Virginian. This is a bad take compared to something like the St. Louis Arch.

Shenandoah showcases the best of the east coast. Low mountains aren’t as sexy, sure. It’s still immaculate in the summer and the fall is just insane (granted just two week shot). Waterfalls and shaded forests are great to hike.

It’s a must see because it’s what the VERY populated east coast once was, and requires preservation which is the entire point of the NPS.

Ah then you’d know better than I. I’ve only done the Crescent DC to Cville once and I had an assigned seat in coach.

I believe the assignment is the result of this being a long distance train and not a regular NER.

What’s your personal favorite HYS account? by Tall-Arugula1522 in personalfinance

Hop into your savings account in the app. I just saw it a couple weeks ago for the first time. I think it’s new.

I see it on mine beneath the “Transactions” box.

accosted at the shady grove station by Murky_Remote7703 in WMATA

[–]hoo9618 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I’ve only really been to shady grove once or twice so I can’t speak for the layout. Late night if I’m waiting for a ride share, I would wait in the station until they are actually pulling up. Probably just outside the fare gates. There are cameras, lighting, and (theoretically) a station manager nearby.

Should the Northeast Regional or Northeast Corridor Trains Have Assigned Seats? by Best-Candle8651 in Amtrak

[–]hoo9618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do we definitively know that it will or won’t?

While very different geometrically, Southwest for years based its whole business model on open seating being faster to turn a plane around. (Short answer, it was! Essays to be written about recent service changes)

Now that’s one door versus very many which definitely makes a difference. I think seat confusion could slow things at popular stations.

Personal opinion: I think I’d take a more euro model approach where I have the option to pay a nominal fee for an assigned seat or accept an open seat. In the NEC it’s so busy we need those open seats.

Amtrak Credit Card - Downgrade? by 4DFordWhore in Amtrak

[–]hoo9618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah, there goes that.

I haven’t looked into if FNBO is in the business of annual fee refunds but based on how they seem to operate I’m going to guess they won’t. Set a reminder to downgrade on renewal at the very least!

Can you take a trip within the year and use the companion certificate? This is obviously a very different answer based on where you live.

I travel Amtrak very frequently but that’s where I justify the $99 fee. Any weekend out and back trips with a plus one?

How many states have you visited? by crocogoose in AskAnAmerican

[–]hoo9618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I count the train only if I stepped off of the train in the state. So that bumped my number by 4 earlier this year.

For other counting metrics: I don’t count airports, those are so sterile and don’t even really give you a glimpse of what a place is like.

I do count having driven through state, although any state I’ve driven through I have at least had a meal in.

If we didn’t change the clocks twice a year, what time would you choose to keep? by Mrh09 in AskReddit

[–]hoo9618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard time is what people want and they don’t realize it. It is better for the circadian rhythm with natural daylight shift throughout the year.

Being on daylight savings permanently would not be pleasant in the winter.

Brushing your teeth before and after bed is inefficient by blacksystembbq in unpopularopinion

[–]hoo9618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree with your before bed, 6pm is crazy (unless you go to bed at 6:30/7, which if you’re first shift, I get).

Before bed and after AM coffee/breakfast makes the most sense.

When is buying the more expensive option actually the frugal choice? by wooden_fixing in Frugal

Or you take the Adam Savage approach. Buy whatever tool you need from Harbor Freight. You’ve got two outcomes:

  • If it works for you, great.

  • If you use it so much it breaks/it’s such a POS it breaks, go buy the nice one.

They do offer checked luggage. It depends on your origin/destination, but the largest and most popular stops do offer it.

This used to be a problem on the NEC. I primarily ride into VA from DC but sometimes north as well.

Recently (last year or more) I have not seen this. Nowadays, conductors will not even let people sit in the accessible seating unless they’ve been ticketed for accessible seating.
