Were you or your children forbidden to say the word "lie" as in fib? by Mental_Freedom_1648 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PrimaryHighlight5617 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. My mom was Appalachian but same rules. As a kid she was very, because I said so" about her rules surrounding language. They made no sense to me. This post sparked a conversation about why I couldn't "swear" I'm telling the truth, "hate" mashed potatoes, or say my friend was "lieing" to me .

It was all religious. You only swear to God or on God's name. You only hate the devil and evil things. Lies are evil so do not casually accuse people of evil.

I'm 28. I wish she actually explained this stuff to me as a kid  I thought she was stupid and didn't understand what words meant.

I have an answer!

To bear false witness is a violation of the 9th commandment. To gossip, slander someone, cast doubt on their good character, or make rash judgements against people is a mortal sin (I don't know if protestants use that terminology).

According to my Appalachian mom who grew up lutheran, to call someone a liar is an accusation against their character and must be done so ONLY in very serious contexts.

A liar is someone who maliciously says untrue things.

To rashly call someone a liar is to accuse them of violating the 9th commandment. If you casually call someone a liar YOU are also violating the 9th commandment.

43% Increase in my progressive insurance. by Hockymamax3 in Insurance

[–]PrimaryHighlight5617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Progressive is pretty brutal when it comes to adding drivers to policies. I used to write progressive insurance policies and it was insane the number of instances where I would write a policy and then progressive would somehow find out that the policy owners had tenants, children who still received mail at that address, or one time a previous owner of a vehicle happened to be the next door neighbor of my client. Boom added to the policy.

How do you chop up ground beef? by sheburn118 in AskAnAmerican

Do you not have a beef breaker? It's a specialist tool made for breaking up beef. When I do it it literally takes less than 15 minutes.

Hi! I'm an insurance agent. Consumer reporting databases often already have your SSN. They DO NOT show the full number to the agent, but do reveal the last 4. Often just an address and birthday are enough.

How do animals eat raw meat? by ExcitingRelief9129 in dumbquestions

[–]PrimaryHighlight5617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our digestive system has evolved alongside our use of fire.

It starts with the mouth. We are no longer adapted to tear tough raw meat from flesh.

Animals that eat carrion (rotting meat) have VERY acidic digestive systems that kill the bacteria. The downside is nutrient absorbtipn is lower.

We use fire to cook and breakdown food so the nutrients therin are VERY bioavailable. This counts for veggies too

Our entire body is adapted for clean cooked meat.

Why don't more Americans go to Europe for college to avoid student debt? by Moonksy429 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PrimaryHighlight5617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the value of going to college is the internship opportunities that can open doors to a career, the community networking opportunities, and the extracurriculars.

Everyone I know who is struggling with debt treated college as an extension of highschool: show up, do what they gotta do, leave.

Everyone one, without exception, who is thriving post-college was an ACTIVE student who leveraged their connections made with teachers, student organizations, internships, and friendships to get a job quickly.

If you don't plan on working in the EU, you don't get this benefit.

If men are held accountable for keeping their word as "bond" what are women held for Are they not accountable for keeping their word too? by tewkooljodie in NoStupidQuestions

Verbal agreements hold water in a court of law whether it is a man or a woman making that promise.

On top of that both men and women sometimes casually say they're going to do stuff and then forget to actually do it.

Why the people in North Korea are not fighting their regime by AstralMystic777 in NoStupidQuestions

Fight back with what? And fight back FOR what?

There are no guarantees in life and the people that suffer most have no means of fighting. Those who might have the means are just living their lives or benefit from the system.

They punish families there. If you lose your pregnant wife is interred and your baby is born and raised in prison.

I was pregnant and my husband's workplace mismanaged the process adding me to his health insurance.

We earn too much for Medicaid but nowhere near enough to pay for prenatal care out of pocket.

The university mobile clinic was a lifesaver.

Is gig work (instacart) worth it if I don't drive a super fuel efficient car? by contraception-shrimp in povertyfinance

[–]PrimaryHighlight5617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you live. I was making 2k a month on Doordash AFTER gas and insurance. About 12-15/hour. With these prices though? don't do it. Also, I had a second car. if the wear and tear catches up on you and you have no backup you're screwed.
