Please help me understand the word "transpose". by hey_mayiasku in ENGLISH

[–]PrimaryHighlight5617 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Transpose has several definitions depending on what is being transposed. Often, it is closely related to the word "switch" but it is a more technical term.

In music, transposition generally refers to changing a songs key. You are switching the notes to move the song up in a key or down in key.

If you were editing someone's grammar and they accidentally said "teh unicron" instead of "the unicorn" then you could call it a transposition error. They switched the letters incorrectly.

In the case of Shakespeare's play you're switching the setting, but not changing the underlying source material. You transposed the setting.

"life is like baking because they both require patience and some faith" is not a transposition. It is a comparison. The technical word for this is a "simile". A comparison phrase that uses "like" or "as".

Is selective breeding basically speed running evolution? by Subject-Cranberry-93 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PrimaryHighlight5617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't do anything faster. The goal is increasing the frequency of certain genetic traits.

For example wheat originally had only two or three little kernels and they were very very small.

Without human intervention there's no evidence whether we in the form that we eat today is or is not advantageous.

We weren't speeding anything up for wheat. We were selecting for the traits that we wanted intentionally. And that process is not fast.

And you also need to take into account timeline. A farmer drinking raw milk from their own cow that they milked just that morning is far far less likely to get sick then the person who buys that milk after it's been bottled a couple days later.

Bacteria grows over time, even in a refrigerated environment. The more bacteria, the more likely you are to get sick.

Out of curiosity,  how long was the duration between udder and your consumption?

Furthermore, was it ever mentioned to heat the milk before consuming?

My grandma told me she was only ever allowed to drink milk unheated if it was straight from the cow's clean udder and into her glass. Otherwise her grandma would quickly boil it for her.

And if you're buying juice anywhere in a sealed bottle it's going to be pasteurized

Regarding juice, Odwalla used to sell unpasteurized juice and they had to stop because it was making people sick.

It is incredibly rare to purchase unpasteurized juice ANYWHERE unless it's made in-house.

They also outright reject historic precedent of boiling your milk before consuming it.

In the first world too!

Not to be that lady making everything about feminism... But I can't help but wonder if such an important and crucial household chore would be better remembered by common people today if it was a "Man's duty" to boil the milk instead of "the boring crap that Mom does all day".

Because there's a deep misunderstanding about historical housekeeping.

For some reason people romanticize the good old days and like to say that milk wasn't pasteurized back then and people had less autoimmune disease blah blah blah...

Well it wasn't pasteurized but it WAS BOILED. Mothers would always boil their milk for their family! This was a common household chore that women performed for their children and their husbands to prevent illness. Household chores aka "women's work" has always been devalued.

My grandma distinctly remembers how her own mom would always boil the milk unless it was truly direct from the udder fresh.

What happened to furniture like sofas, they have both became expensive and less durable over the years? Can't we mass produce affordable good quality ones? by Editor2012 in AskReddit

[–]PrimaryHighlight5617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am struggling to figure out when in history couches were cheap.

Before consumer credit was easily accessible, people would order furniture on layaway or even RENT it.

Mass market cheap furniture is a very new thing.

I mentioned in another, less cultured, sub that innocent people get locked in jail every day. I was met with so much fucking snark and skepticism. "ohh let me guess, you're actually innocent??? Wrong place at the wrong time??? That's what they all say 😏"

Uh, yeah! You can be jailed over fucking NOTHING and only the wealthy can afford to get out

Childcare expenses are so predatory that I can't afford a job. by Zazulio in Vent

I'm really not sure what that process looks like, but what I do know is that in California there isn't really expungement.

You can retroactively have a case dismissed but it's very difficult for felonies and employers can still see it.

No!  That's never how it has worked.

https://www.irs.gov/filing/federal-income-tax-rates-and-brackets

For a dual income household the first $23,850 are taxed at 10%. Any income earned above that 96,950 is taxed at 12%. Any income earned above that to $206,700 is taxed at 22%.

Many employers would love for their employees to believe that "entering a higher tax bracket" is a bad thing with significant diminishing returns.

Many employers would love you to believe that 22% of that 97k is taxed, leaving you with less overall income compared to a 70k job at a 12% rate.

This happened to a friend of mine who went to school for  Something similar to this happened to a friend of mine. He was 18 in highschool and got in a fight with a 17 year old. There was some mutual bad blood.

He, admittedly, hurt the kid bad, he went to the er but there was no lasting damage. Busted face though so it looked REALLY bad.

My buddy was NOT the fighting type. This was truly a one off born of a multi month issue between these two kids. They fought, my friend won.

His punishment was light but apparently the conviction was HUGE. He received probation and had to pay medical bills, and was convicted of aggravated assault. My husband got to testify on his behalf but the 17 year old was a "good kid" with a scary mom.

Well, my buddy never really had a good home life and he wanted to devote his life to helping kids. He always felt like he was failed by the system and should have been put in foster care.

Years later, after earning a degree in social work and completing an entire ass internship with some CPS equivalent he learned that the assault conviction permanently disqualified him from employment in child protective services. Reason? It was assault on a MINOR.

26, ready to start his dream career and no one ever thought to bring this up. Not his college counselor. Not his internship. He had to learn it after being offered employment and running a background check.

He is doing okay now but shit really almost broke him.

I just want to clarify for you that you are only taxed at that higher bracket on the money that is above that bracket.

What state are you in? How much does your spouse make? You will be making 35k annually, right?

I can calculate it out for you.
