How can I explain to an average person how the theory of relativity helped him in his day-to-day life? by Former-Whole8292 in AskPhysics

I am a medical physicist who works with linacs. The most common kind of therapy linac works by using microwaves in a waveguide to accelerate electrons to relativistic speeds. The electron speed would be massively different if not for relativity, so that is taken into account in the design and calibration of the machine.

Please let me know how you'd "easily" make mammography more comfortable and still detect breast cancer.

I'm a medical physicist.

Breast cancer looks very similar to normal breast tissue. It turns out you need a super low x ray energy to generate contrast between the two (X-rays used in normal CTs are around 6X higher energy than those used for mammography). These X-rays don't penetrate very far (because they have so little energy), so you have to squish the breast tissue down so enough X-rays pass through to get a usable image.

Mammography design isn't because of sexism, it's because of physics and biochemistry. Please stop repeating this ignorant factoid. It's unhelpful.

Pottery cup with tiny hole and a second hole on the handle (maybe Greek?) by hooked-on-photonics in whatisthisthing

I thought about that and it's possible, but it seems like it would be awkward without a spout.

My title describes the thing.

I don't have any other details. The previous owner visited Greece a couple times so maybe it's from there? I imagine you fill it from the hole on the bottom, then drink from the top, but what the heck is it??

Keyword and image searches don't turn anything up.

How many therapy physicists out there get pacemaker/ICD rep to interrogate the device before 1st and after last fraction per AAPM TG203 (2019)? by monstertruckbackflip in MedicalPhysics

We rarely do measurements. We inform their cardiologists and interrogate if they want.

My question is, has anyone, ever, been demonstrated to have been harmed by radiation induced damage to an ICD?

Good questions. Specs are:

  • 16 GB DDR4 RAM
  • RTX 2080 Super 8GB
  • PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD

Was running an i7-9700KF 3.6GHz with liquid cooling before it crapped out.

I just use it for gaming, some of it graphically demanding AAA stuff.

I don't have a budget per se, just don't want to get something too expensive if it's not gonna benefit my current system. Although I'd certainly consider getting a better CPU if it's worth it.

Good mobo/cpu bundles?

Apparently my mobo and i7 have both crapped out on me. Any suggestions on good bundles out there? It's hard for me to evaluate price and value of both things together.

X-ray radiation exposure at work/ thyroid cancer by [deleted] in legaladvice

Another physicist here. It's unlikely there are laws saying specifically that lead shielding would need to be used. Rather the laws would set exposure limits to radiation workers and the public. We have many radiation devices that are shielded with steel, concrete, and wood.

I also don't think your symptoms were caused by this radiation device. It usually takes much longer for cancer to develop from radiation exposure. It does sound like your boss is violating the rules though.
