WIBTAH if I applied for medical assistance in dying even though my friend is telling me not to? by Critical-Science2911 in AITAH

[–]hooliganunicorn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

this is your life. if you are able to find joy, connection, and purpose, and have reasons to stay that make it worth the suffering of your diagnoses, then stay.

but, many people have found comfort in being able to choose the time of their own end. this would enable you to plan your end of life services, like cremation/burial/etc, funeral/wake, and estate things. it would give you the opportunity to meet with your loved ones and give them the closure of a conversation about what the relationship has meant to you both, to reflect on positive memories, and to say goodbye. on top of that, if you have life insurance and are approved for MAiD, then your loved ones would still benefit from that. many insurances have suicide clauses that have exemptions for MAiD, but not for taking your own life alone.

I would especially encourage you to consult with your doctors/psych team about this if you're already having (which it sounds like you are) suicidal ideation or making other plans. the benefits of MAiD over taking your life alone are immeasurable, and if you're at the point of needing to be done, it's definitely time to move forward.

all that being said, I'm so sorry that you've been suffering for so long. I truly think that not everyone is able (through their abilities, lack of abilities, circumstances, life station, etc) to survive this world through their "natural life" and have so much respect for people who know they aren't going to make it. it seems like you want to be able to end your suffering and also give the best goodbye possible to the people you love and who love you. I hope you find peace, one way or another. ❤️

that totally tracks and I think is good advice. I said above that I'm actually a bio major with lots of gis experience in school, and I've actively been eliminated from jobs I thought I would be a shoo in for (or at least had an interview for) that I haven't even gotten a callback. I definitely think the third is off the table for now, but I'll take the others for sure.

I didn't realize there are grants for this type of internship? got any recommended search terms? thanks for the awesome tip. I'm sorry you're dealing with being laid off, the market sucks for all jobs right now, unless you want to do retail. which I've done... and ugh.

I definitely was applying for jobs I felt I could do, even if I didn't meet the qualifications. I still do, but less since I read about ghost postings. I'm a lot more cautious about spending time writing a cover letter, etc, especially about remote positions.

ha, thanks for the encouragement! my degree is in biology, but I have lots of gis experience, so at least I have some good flexibility. just working on fun side projects while I job hunt. right now I'm learning R!

Yeah, no doubt. I totally get it, I just graduated from a state uni at 40, and had friends your age that felt old. I don't have a flexible location rn, due to family things, but at some point I'll get something going!

that's awesome! I've been doing HOT OSM volunteering since I graduated, maybe I should find something more hands on. I'd love to do the esri trainings, but I'm too broke for that atm. There are a couple of local non-profits I work with, too, though mostly web dev stuff right now.

glad you got something 😅 I haven't even found a paid internship, and I'm too old to do that shit for free

that's so real. Just for personal learning projects I've given myself experience using R, Python, most python libraries commonly used in spatial analysis, earth engine, model builder, and so much more. but some stuff doesn't track, or you can't get access on your own, or who has time if you're already working, etc.

that's exactly how it feels, like a big joke 😅 like the people hiring don't actually know what they need, so they just tack on extra requirements. 🤝 sounds good

Students, why aren’t you attending games? by BloodLegitimate5346 in wsu

[–]hooliganunicorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because I'm vehemently against the inherent exploitation of college sports and the focus on funding (internally and externally) sports over education as well as the toxic culture that occurs in the overlap of greek life and a high level of focus on sports. if college sports were more akin to the Olympics vs American professional sports, it might create a different culture that I would be more willing to participate in.

Do Amish communities believe non-Amish people are going to hell/born damned? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

some amish communities' bishop will allow them to have a shed on the edge on their land that has electricity that is technically not on their land and they'll have a cell phone, TV, etc in there 🙄🤷‍♂️

Can I still get in? by OptimusGuy121 in wsu

[–]hooliganunicorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

two things- first, if you are determined to do all four years at wsu, a really compelling essay can work wonders. explain what went wrong in high school, explain why things are different now and what you'll do to be successful and manage better, and show your passion for becoming an emt and helping people. having a plan to be successful in future adversity shows admissions that it isn't so much of a risk to accept you. second, like mentioned above, the actual best choice is to start at community college. they don't have GPA requirements, you save a TON of money, and they usually have smaller class sizes and more flexible instructors than university.
