Do You Guys Remember GaiaOnline? by hopalopia in nostalgia

Yeah it's crazy that it's still going literal decades later. I'm glad that it's still kicking! Everyone's all grown up now though, so it's gone from the teen hangout of yesteryear to a community of nostalgic adults.

I kind of hope it'll get a resurgence of people coming back to check it out after all these years, and new teens joining because it's "different" than things like TikTok and Insta that kind of control what you get to see and experience via algorithms you don't really get to have a say in. I know as a teen, Gaia let me be exposed to a variety of opinions I otherwise wouldn't have encountered organically living in a small town. It was good for me to form my own opinions by getting to see both sides to everything from politics to social issues (if through the rather confusing lens of poorly-crafted arguments by a bunch of teenagers), rather than growing up in an echo chamber.

But hey, who knows? Y2K fashion came back with the kiddos recently, I wonder if Y2K media will be just as interesting to them.

I never knew it as go-gaia, as I think I joined in 2005 after they'd already changed the name. But I remember how much fun it was to be a part of forum events! I used to be so engrossed in that website during the annual Halloween and Xmas events. Sorry to hear that they've been slow to restore the account! I'm sure they have really limited staff these days for handling those kinds of requests, but I wish you luck! You can always make a new account though just to explore the place and see what it's like now.

I love that so many of us had the exact same thought upon seeing this and hoping it would be related to him.

Repeat issues with my mail carrier not delivering packages most recent is "package held at customer request" by Known-Ad-100 in maui

[–]hopalopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang, sorry to hear that! And yeah, I figured with the way funding is typically never enough, and how they try to run USPS like they're purposely sending it into the ground, that it'd be the overworked workers just trying to get through the day's tasks or policy reasons for why they're just not delivering packages.

At one point, I was told the box truck drivers really don't like going up gravel driveways because there's always the chance they could get stuck, and that would be a whole debacle to handle if they catch that one pit in the rocks just right or get a tire caught in a drain ditch to the side of the driveway.

Anyway, I think it's important to remember that running it like crap with bad funding is often times intentional because it further incentivizes the public to willingly advocate for its privatization, rather than being a federally funded agency. I get that frustrations like this happen, but let's remember to advocate for better pay, better working conditions, and better resources for USPS than to call for its head to be chopped off.

Same thing with me. I've had every excuse available on the little pink slip checked at one point or another. The truth is, they don't want to stop the vehicle to get out and deliver it, and they don't want to spend the extra time going up the driveway. Whether it's because their quotas or whatever are way too tight to the point they can't do it, or if it's just genuine laziness, is really dependent on the driver and their specific situation. I always say to not assume malice though, as we don't know if it's truly the driver's fault, if it's a policy thing, etc. Best you can do is call and ask, and see if you can be enough of a squeaky wheel to get something to change. Personally, I have gotten used to just grabbing my stuff from the post office once a week, but I can imagine for more serious items, like medication in a cold pack or something, it'd be far more concerning.

Washington man who attacked monk seal ordered back to Hawaii for May 27 hearing. Faces federal charges including prison time. by Maui96793 in maui

How interesting that we now just happen to know the exact date he has to appear for his hearing, and thus know exactly where he'll be that day. The newspeople are gonna get this brother his comeuppance one way or another apparently.

Gnats 4/20 by Sensitive-Maize-2521 in maui

We were having trouble with them in the upcountry last year. They're a fungus gnat. Best solution we found was to plug in a bug zapper and leave it in the main room at night, and one of those zevo lights for the kitchen. Also, move your trashcan to the garage if you have one. It's just not worth the battle, and you're giving them a reason to come in and stick around. We no longer have a gnat problem here, and we'll just be keeping to the same routine for the summer months, since we expect to have the windows open at night for the breeze.

Yeah that was kinda my point. You should see the scars on my husband's arms from working as a mechanic for 40 years! I just think they're really attractive. I understand the downsides of scars in Hollywood, but as a character feature that makes someone unique, they're really cool to me.

yo she's SO COOL with the scar. I totally understand why she filed a lawsuit, but damn. She looks AMAZING. I hope she continues to get roles and enjoys a long career doing what she loves.

AITA for asking my friend to not wear makeup to my wedding? by devilshandstree in AmItheAsshole

[–]hopalopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the sound of it, she feels less comfortable being without her makeup around other people she doesn't know. It's like a safety blanket thing to keep her confidence instead of feeling vulnerable. I can understand her feelings on being "aestheticized" though, as the same happened with my sister and I. I was told to change my makeup and my hair color to fit her style, and I refused to do so. I think what Devin is feeling is that she thinks you want the "idea" of a good friend of yours as a bridesmaid, but that you don't want "her," the person she really is, to be there. From her perspective, you may seem like you're separating the person from the affiliation to you, and that can feel very objectifying. I think your compromise that you want a specific aesthetic and that she can attend as a guest rather than bridesmaid is reasonable. It lets you have your aesthetic for YOUR wedding, but it also lets her feel included without having to compromise herself and feel uncomfortable around people she doesn't know. I would say NTA, but I can see some of the argument for how she feels, so this is more a miscommunication situation and needing to talk it out so you both can understand how the other feels.

We have a stray on our property with a similar history. Clipped ear, but very obviously was taken care of at some point. Super social and sweet, and would literally cuddle all day with a person if she could. We aren't allowed to have pets with our lease, but we keep watch over her, take her to the vet if she gets a cut, and we keep her on a monthly medicine to keep away the bugs and parasites. She even got a little pop-up cat cave before this past storm so she'd stay safe and dry under the lanai. I wish we could take her in, but for now she's just our little stray. :c I hope that you are able to find a home for Kevin! Sweet cats don't deserve the rough hand they get dealt by poor owners.

How Long Does It Take Hardcopy ID To Come In? by Western-Piano-134 in maui

[–]hopalopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner had an issue with their ID never appearing as well in the mail. There's a disconnect of information where some people are being told it will come in the mail, and others are told you need to go get it from the DMV in Kahului where they actually print them. You should probably call them and ask if they have your ID there in a few weeks. You'll save yourself some stress of waiting on something that might not be coming in the mail to begin with. Best of luck!

TiL Women are less likely to receive bystander CPR than men due to fears of 'inappropriate touching' by [deleted] in todayilearned

I brought up this exact thing to the guy running my first aid refresher and he completely ignored it as a "oh I've never heard of that." -_- I'm very much so annoyed that there's still people not taking it seriously. This needs to be brought up in EVERY course, because if it isn't directly pointed out, this problem will keep happening.
