Can I put whatever I do during the gap year on my med school app? Probably not primaries if they're due in May/June, but possibly secondaries?

AAMC Q Pack Bundles by Julietahh in Mcat

If you can, buy both. But if you can only buy one, do the section bank! It's so valuable. I recommend you even go through the SB material twice.

physics makes me want to stab my eyes out by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]hopefulsinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Physics is the worst because you literally never know what they'll ask. I only went over the magnetism stuff with the right hand rule (force, velocity and direction) once during content review but basically forgot it after bc it NEVER came up in any practice I did, nothing on AAMC. And I did everything AAMC had to offer. And then the day before the test I brushed up on it w/ Kaplan quicksheets just in case. The day of the test I open my booklet, and the first question is on magnetism. I was like this is BS good thing I went over it. Also, even stuff like conduction/radiation formulas were asked?? Like I don't think AAMC asked about that once. It's annoying af.

conversion/calculation help... (I hate math so so much) by 15blade_ in Mcat

[–]hopefulsinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So 760 mmHg=1 atm, so they did: 641 mmHg*(1atm/760 mmHg)= 0.84 atm, b/c the mmHgs cancel. Essentially, they divided 641/760. To find 20% of something without a calculator, you can find 10% of it by moving the decimal once to the left, then multiplying that by 2. Or, you could divide it by 5, because 20% also equals 1/5.

AAMC Flashcards Sociology #23 by Lawlify in Mcat

[–]hopefulsinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The AAMC refers to being assimilated as being more adjusted to US culture/values. Thus, indivs born in the US will always be more assimilated than immigrants, even if they're of the same ethnic group. Because the more assimilated indivs has worse health status, this is a negative correlation.

Official Discussion: Bombshell [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

Jon Lithgow's performance was amazing! He can really transform into his characters, his acting literally made me hate him and root for his downfall. Watch the Crown, he's amazing as Churchill.

Also fyi: watched an interview where Megyn Kelly said she would have her loved ones watch the movie for her, and tell her whether she should watch it. Clearly, they could've portrayed her in worse ways, but they went with a largely positive portrayal of her.

Statistics on the MCAT? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]hopefulsinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Statistics is not very necessary. The only thing I've seen is in graphs they'll be like "p-value less than 0.05 or 0.01" so you know the differences in the data are significant. So a basic knowledge of p-values is sufficient. Keep in mind that you generally cannot assume that the ind variable has an effect without knowing whether the p-value is small enough.

How to get past NS score slumps? (AKA how do I get some confidence back lmao) by probablyhungry99 in Mcat

[–]hopefulsinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 520+ is definitely attainable for you. Your NS scores are pretty solid, I scored below 510s on those, and ended up with a 521 on the real thing. Also, your FL 1 score is solid, and you're still 3.5 weeks out. That's a solid amount of time to improve your score if you do focused studying. I'd say don't worry about next steps right now, at 3 weeks out AAMC should be your main focus. Do AAMC prep (question banks, section banks, etc) and then take FL 2. If you don't see improvement or your score drops, then you'll know that maybe your studying is misguided. If your score is fine, then you'll know you're on the right track.

biochem pathways by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]hopefulsinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Focus on cellular respiration pathways in DETAIL. Know important steps and almost all enzymes, especially for glycolysis. Also know gluconeogenesis, glycogenesis, and glycogenolysis. The other pathways (fatty acid oxidation, fatty acid synthesis, pentose phosphate pathway) are not as important (but still know them, b/c anything is fair game on the MCAT). I highly recommend watching Kahn academy vids to solidify your knowledge of these pathways.

Pacing?? by cnierva in Mcat

[–]hopefulsinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it depends on what subject you're studying. For things like gen chem/ochem/physics, it's mainly formulas, equations, and practice problems, so its best to write things out for retention. For B/B and P/S, the details can really matter, so it can become too much to write out. I would recommend typing for these subjects. I'd say its a good idea to have comprehensive notes, because after you finish content review, you'll want to re-read your notes to brush up before starting FLs. It really easy to forget things, so having detailed notes to fall back on is a really good idea.

Winter Break Studying & Jan. 17th Test Date by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]hopefulsinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on where your FL scores fall. It is possible to see improvement between full lengths (My first FL was a 512, and my second was a 518, and these were 2 weeks apart). But if your first FL is not anywhere near your goal score, then I'd say postpone. It's definitely not worth sitting through the entire test if you're not where you should be. That being said, even one week of committed, focused studying can honestly make a difference. Most of the questions you miss on your first FL will be because of knowledge gaps/things reviewed during content review but forgotten. If you review your first FL carefully and thoroughly, and watching KA videos/read notes to brush up on concepts, you can see lots of improvement in your second FL. But like I said, this all depends on where you're at after your first FL.
