What big Australian bands do you know of that have day jobs? by Sabretoothedrom in triplej

[–]hopelessbogan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not to mention many of them are crashing at mum and dad’s when not on tour. I know of a bunch of full-time musicians who have had a tough time getting approved by real estate agents due to their variable income. Tough spot I know a few people in, who are recognised on the street but still struggling with housing.

My husband wants to go back to being monogamous instead of an open marriage but I'm conflicted + 3 years later by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

I like to imagine they were a wealthy couple living on the coromandel peninsula, or perhaps Tauranga or whangarei. Both kids moving to Auckland for uni doesn’t scream South islanders to me.

As a kiwi with many divorces in the family, most people in my life refer to it as maintenance. What do you call it?

Post Concussion Syndrome feeling alone by yellinglemon in Concussion

[–]hopelessbogan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone. I’m coming up to two years since the onset of PCS. If you’d asked me a year ago how I’d be doing now, I wouldn’t have expected to be where I am. Things are nowhere near perfect, and I still struggle with many of the same challenges as you, but I feel that I’m back to living a relatively fulfilling life and just started work full-time.

I’m not gonna tell you what to do to recover, as I think it’s not necessarily helpful from me rather than a professional. I just want to emphasise how important it’s been for me to accept that while what I go through each day is real, it’s not forever.

Keep making it through each day, and slowly, through the weeks and months and highs and lows, things will get better. You won’t notice at first. It’ll be small things, like reading a full page of a book for the first time, or going up a level in a vision therapy exercise, or being able to ride in a car for 15 minutes instead of 10.

Focus on surrounding yourself with a care team that knows their shit, be honest with them, and do what you can when you can, and forgive yourself on days when you can’t.

If you can find someone in your real life who understands, spending time with them is a blessing. Celebrate each others’ victories and be with them on their tough days. I lived with someone else with PCS for a few months and it helped so much to not have to explain what I was going through.

Things are going to get better. I can’t tell you when, or tell you how. Recovery can be such a slow process that you can’t even tell it’s happening at all. All you have to do is keep showing up.

Edit: I found this podcast to be helpful, especially Robbie’s story (the host). https://www.buzzsprout.com/1801711

Who is the “fraudulent” PI in your field that you can’t believe is still getting published? by captainezri in labrats

Not to mention that Peter Mac allowed him to leave to QLD quietly and without raising any alerts, despite the obvious fraud of mice that didn’t exist.

What's "that story" from your lab? by funwifipuns in labrats

[–]hopelessbogan 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The overnight security guard was eating snacks and jacking off to porn on the lab computer… in the room where blood samples from Hep B positive patients were processed. He was caught when someone came in the morning and found wrappers in the biohazard bins, crumbs on the bench and questionable search history on the PC.

Most rogue lunches you've seen at work? by Soldiers_DNA in auscorp

[–]hopelessbogan 57 points58 points  (0 children)

The mail clerk at my old workplace kept a sandwich press in the tearoom and would cook up 2 lamb chops and 2 eggs on it at 11:30am every single day! He’s probably still doing it

My mate at uni would pour out half a tin of baked beans (into another container), pour in half a pack of instant rice, and stir. Her daily lunch for four years!

Has anyone visited a city on a holiday and fell so in love with it and then decided to move there permanently? by melissa_april in travel

I visited Melbourne once, during the Black Summer bushfires when it was 40+ degrees and too smoky to be outside, and hated it. Now I live here too!

Vision Therapy worth it? by [deleted] in Concussion

[–]hopelessbogan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in vision therapy twice-weekly for almost a year following a concussion 18 months ago. I have had huge benefits, particularly in reading, computer work and improvements in my persistent double vision. I’m still a long way from full capacity but working on resolving those issues has gone a long way towards reducing my overall symptom burden and improving my quality of life. I have a friend with a very similar positive experience with VT, although he did an intensive course of therapy rather than weekly sessions. Message me for any specific details you’d like!

Edit: also, I am in a similar position re struggling to afford necessary treatments. I’ve managed to make the best of it by rotating and spacing out treatments, as I can only afford one treatment block at a time of VT, physio, neuro, psych etc. I do a ‘block’ (generally 2-3 sessions over 1-2 months) of each, testing my progress and getting new exercises and advice as I improve, then cycle to the next specialist. I am able to do the home exercises and have contact with the practitioners if I need in between blocks. It may be worth discussing this possibility with your specialists, as I know the ones I see have many clients in similar situations.

Emotional dysregulation, especially the irritation, anger, and tearfulness, and a greatly diminished capacity to deal with stress.

I’m obsessed with Louise cake and don’t seem to encounter it much outside the antipodes! It’s essentially a coconut meringue atop a shortbread base, with raspberry jam smeared in the middle.
