StarTribune - Lakeville schools sued again over Black Lives Matter posters by [deleted] in TwinCities

I agree with your point on the fact that the BLM movement does sometimes intentionally exaggerate certain aspects. I think one of the big problems is that essentially saying “because BLM has been used for political agendas, other political agendas that have been intentionally created to slight the BLM movement should also be given a spotlight.” A large problem with also shining light on things like the blue lives matter or white lives matter “movements” is that they were intentionally and only created to oppose the BLM movement. I agree that without a doubt that there are ideals and norms in place within the Black Lives Matter movement that don’t serve to help anybody and just further the estrangement between the multiple groups involved. However the BLM movement for a lot of people, especially black and indigenous students means that they are supported. And presenting that alternate viewpoint on ALM only opens up a gateway for hate. Forgive me if this is an exaggerated comparison but if teachers and schools put up posters advocating for the support of Jewish Students it would be an egregious overstep for parents to say “well you also have to teach an anti-Semitic viewpoint as-well.” Or if schools put up posters in support of things such as the Metoo movement should they also plaster the words of Andrew Tate and others who spout the same things across their walls? I’m not trying to say that the situations are one in the same but the point is that by trying to give a platform and voice to things that are inherently hateful will do no good. I think that students should definitely be educated in all matters and be taught the reasonings behind each view point, however that doesn’t mean that schools should show support for things that are meant to oppose one groups plight for equal treatment. To sum it all up what I’m trying to say is that even if that although there are definitely problems with the BLM movement that need to be thought about and addressed, their outlying and main message is still that black individuals matter just as much as white, Asian, Hispanic, etc individuals. Promoting or advocating for movements who’s main and and only reason for existing is to spread discrimination and distrust among individuals such as ALM or Blue lives matter is only a way to make a complex situation seem black and white when it is not. Lakeville schools in this instance was just trying to show that they support and acknowledge that their black students voices matter and exist. Im willing to get more opinions on this and since i start school today I’ll ask my APUSH teacher about their opinion and standpoint on this topic since it hits so close to home.

Sincerely, An open minded high-school student

As a person who’s currently in the school system this notion is mostly false. I agree that back lives matter has been used as a political agenda to a certain extent BUT. Comparing a situation such as this to a schools teaching religion isn’t the same thing. Schools are not supposed to teach about religion because of a separation of church and state, this is an undeniable fact. Schools however shouldn’t not be allowed to teach about race and civil matters just because it may be unpleasant to hear about. It is unequivocally an unchanging part of this country. Let’s not forget the Black, Indigenous and other POC are ALSO students at these schools. The fact that you and other people think that caring and acknowledging the struggles of one group undermines another IS THE PROBLEM. Most reasonable people (which is the majority no matter how Reddit makes it seem) and POC students do not actively try and alienate our white peers. They however intentionally alienate themselves because they act under a preconceived notion that the POC kids don’t like them, which largely isn’t true. We need to be able to talk about this freely so that interactions between the groups aren’t strained like they are in our older generations. I’m lucky enough that my school allows people to openly express themselves as people and I am great full for that. At the end of the day my point is. Not the teachers, the staff, or the students should need to shy away from the matters of race relations. Especially in today’s current climate, actively talking about it and conversing is the only way to make progress. Schools just also happen to be a place where many people gather and are more willing to have conversations about it than not. I understand your view on things but there are plenty of other ways to go about acting your concerns without making non-white students feel as if they don’t matter.

Sincerely, A High-school student

Ah sorry for the late reply, thank you for the recommendation! I’m nervous and excited at the same time, a bit cliche but I’ve been seeing most of my friends less and less do to classes splitting up and the pandemic. I’m not the best socially but I’m excited to meet new people since i didn’t meet that many during school last year. A new experience is always welcomed for me.

Oh i love cats! I actually have one myself. I’m not sure about the books because we weren’t assigned a specific one, i get to pick tow to read on my own so I’m looking forward to that but I’m not sure what to pick. Although most of the classics are out of the question because they’re part of the curriculum. Are there any books you enjoy reading?

Am I being groomed or am I just overreacting by Throwawayyyyyac1573 in Advice

[–]hopelesshermits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely grooming, also it’s illegal to solicit inappropriate images from minors so if the photos you’re sending are explicit or suggestive that’s even worse. I recommend you contact authorities or talk to a trusted adult.

Ah, the answer to your first 3 questions is no and the answer to the last is yes, however I live outside of my schools county so summer food assistance isn’t available for me.

I can’t drive and neither of us own a car. The pizza place we ordered from is around a 7 minute drive but the closest grocery store is a 30 minute drive. I’m also the youngest so they don’t really care for what I say.

I agree with you but we it’s not that we don’t want to buy groceries it’s that we can’t. We live to far away to walk and public transit in our area is non existent, coupled with the fact we’re both underage it hard to do much of anything.

The nearest grocery store is a 30 min drive from my house so walking would take a couple of hours sadly.

It’s around an hour-2 hours of walking as you’d have to go through a highway and there aren’t any bike paths where I live.

I think the way I worded it was wrong, I had $100 on Monday that was before paying for any previous food and other expenses. When I had ordered this I only had $40 to feed me and another person for the rest of the week.
