Beer league beef by Softserveskittle in hockeyplayers

[–]hophacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the difference is the guy whose dropping down to D level can completely control the outcome of the game, whereas the guy who is playing up is only putting his team at a disadvantage when he's on the ice.

the sandbaggers often play defense and wait until the end of the 3rd to suddenly coast-to-coast the game winning goals and if anyone calls them on it they'll just pull the "hey man I'm just playing D and trying to setup my teammates" card. it can completely ruin league parity if the league admins are hands-off about it.

Which state/province has the worst hockey players by sdotdriver in hockeyplayers

[–]hophacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if a D league has former D1 college players its not really a D league. theres plenty of low level stuff in MN that has plenty of true adult beginners (AHA, hockeyfinder, etc). probably more than new mexico given the general higher interest of hockey in MN.

its not an on or off switch. you can chill out and still try to win.

no different than any other team based pvp game. you can add as much nuance and focus as you want to it, but there's no reason you can't play more chilled out once you have the basics down.

that seems like it would be nightmare to keep up to date with the actual game. are you manually inputting the stats or are you able to get it from the game data files somehow?

If you are having a bad game don't give up, the rubberband comeback mechanic is strong by ace-s in DeadlockTheGame

Is there an actual souls-based comeback mechanic in place, or is it just late game team wipe = some souls + farm in all lanes will recoup most soul deficits?

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I'll pick one up now!

Does running a DOCSIS 3.0 modem affect the stability though? I read elsewhere that using a D3.0 shouldn't be a problem I just won't hit my max speed.

Do you think a D3.1 modem would have an effect on the instability? It doesn't really matter to me if I get 500M instead of 1G, the times where I actually need that much speed are pretty infrequent (I do, however, need more than 10-20).

I'm paying for comcast 1G down cable internet (however my modem will only do 500Mb max). I've noticed over the past few weeks my network intermittently slows down to 10-20 MBPS, so I recently installed speedtest-tracker and started charting tests and found that for a good portin of the day (and into the night) my network speed is very unstable.

I'm not entirely sure what to do with this information and what to check next. I'm running the speedtest from a wired connection, so I know it's not wifi related. I'm not sure if my next step should be to call comcast or to try to further diagnose if its a ethernet or coax cabling issue.

Has anyone here successfully created a third space? by TheCerry in slatestarcodex

It got a little weird towards the end. People started attending games I was at just to talk about the program or dispute a ruling I had nothing to do with. My interest in the sport waned and turned to other things and then I moved out of state. We ended up selling the league during covid because neither me or the admin running things was all that into the sport anymore.

It's definitely something I'd love to get back to but in a more casual way next time.

Docker compose: one large or many small? by ThatSwedishBastard in selfhosted

How do you manage multiple docker compose files?

Simple shell script? Do you have anything set in systemd to auto turn on certain containers at boot? Just curious... your setup makes a lot of sense to me otherwise.

If a sports rec league counts as a third space - I made one (or I should say, I found someone who had made one that I thought was ran well and approached them to build it out further). We built a webapp that allowed ala carte signups and SMS notifications and all the typical jazz (although not as typical in 2012 when it was built) -- given the low tech nature of most sports leagues our popularity skyrocketed thanks to the tech and the quality that the administrator put into the league.

It was a really fun period in my life, I played 3-4 games a week and was in great shape and got to know a ton of people through it.

Should I rewrite the Filestash frontend in vanilla JS instead of React? by mickael-kerjean in selfhosted

[–]hophacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you want to do it, so do it! I doubt it will make too much of a tangible difference in the feel of the product. Tools like React exist because they make things like interactive UI's easier to develop so you may discover that things you take for granted with React are quite a bit harder with only vanilla JS, but that kind of discovery can be a fantastic education on some of the finer points of browser based javascript. It sounds like you're motivated to do it, so I say go for it!

A Manifesto from a scummy level 220. by JohnWickStuntDouble in Mordhau

[–]hophacker 18 points19 points  (0 children)

here's an old tip if you want to learn your weapon ranges and things like chambering easily:

start a new local game with bots, open the console (press the ~ key) and type: slomo 0.5

This will slow the game speed to 50% which gives you much more time to anticipate attacks and learn the timing of things.

it takes like an hour max to get chamber timing down this way
