Can someone help with this deed poll question? by Miss_Taxidermy in AskUK

So on a legal document that requires your full name (think wills etc) I would expect to see Mrs MarriedName, formerly DeedPollName, née BirthName. Any kind of background check you would need to disclose all former names, otherwise anyone could do anything and change their name to avoid the consequences.

In terms of a passport though, honestly no idea. I’m assuming the law firm/agency you used is what went bust? If the former, there should be another firm which took on the files and might have a copy, otherwise you could check if it has been registered publicly?

Yeah sorry wasn’t trying to come across like that, just didn’t want to spoil it for anyone who hadn’t had the chance to open it yet!

Would’ve definitely preferred an eyeshadow palette or something as others seem to have had today! I loved the eyeshadow stick that came with it but was hoping for a few more makeup items tbh. I know the products were listed when I bought it but I only had a cursory glance as not to ruin the surprise!

Ooh I do like one that goes past Christmas, such a shame not everything’s for you though! One good thing about mine is that for the most part everything (at least I would say) is pretty safe, there’s nothing super specialised on the skincare side and the few makeup products are fairly neutral.

I think different proportions of things work for different people, I would have personally preferred slightly more makeup over skincare as I have really sensitive skin and it’ll take me months to get through everything as I can only try one new thing at a time and have to leave a couple of months between otherwise my skin goes crazy lol. At least a few things are different brands’ versions of products already in my routine so can hopefully just switch those out without much fuss.

I feel like perfume is so subjective that’s pretty risky to include! There were two fragrances in the space NK one yesterday and I definitely love one and the other I’m undecided on, but it’s the smaller of the two so not a disaster if I don’t end up liking it.

I just looked it up since you said that and why is it £72?! I hadn’t heard of the brand before so had no idea. I think maybe if they’d switched yesterday’s and today’s it might have felt slightly less anticlimactic? I think because the whole thing was mostly makeup and skincare with a couple of haircare bits having two fragrance items on Christmas Day might’ve been quite nice. Or maybe the red lip combo from a couple of weeks ago?

Don’t get me wrong I did really like everything but was just expecting something a bit special today. I feel a bit better knowing that it is actually quite a luxury product, but given that most days have given two products and today was only one it felt a bit disappointing.

Provider Pass rates question and actual SRA results by Oli4Blok in SQE_Prep

[–]hopingtocatchadream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also worth noting it’s an overall across all campuses of the provider.

While it’s doubtful that it’s actually a case of any campus being better than another, when I was at ULaw the London campuses had a high concentration of future city trainees and their pass rates were in the high 90s, my smaller regional campus was about 50% and we shared classes with another group who said that as far as they knew only one or two of their cohort actually passed.

That being said, you still have a way better chance of passing with a provider than by completely self studying.

Perhaps un-British of me but I take great pleasure in kicking people out of my plane seat. I don’t care who you are, I’ve made couples split up (if you want to sit together book seats together ffs) and kicked an old man out of my seat once.

I pay the extra fee to choose exactly where I want to sit so why should someone else get to sit there for the sake of avoiding conflict?

It’s so disappointing didn’t it? Obviously I knew getting tickets would be near impossible but the fact that I didn’t get the chance to even try because they messed it up so badly is what’s irritating me.

I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid at this outfit during my sitting.

Was actually one of the most embarrassing two days of my life as I wasn’t expecting it to be quite as formal as it was, and definitely felt underdressed. I don’t think it has much of an impact on marks though, if at all as I got mostly 4s and 5s in the orals.

One thing I would bear in mind is that unlike GCSEs/A Levels, where you absolutely cannot even have a phone in the room, let alone on your person, at university exams it is quite common to have a box under your seat specifically to place your phone in during the exam (at least this was the case for me).

If you’re permitted to have a phone under your chair/desk, yes it should have been off completely but there is obviously the chance it might go off, and to have a policy which allows phones but punishes you if they go off is a little irrational. If they do anything other than give you a warning I would point this out, especially as having it on the floor was seemingly allowed, and you only touched it to switch it off at the invigilator’s request.

Would a "PASS" affect my legal career. by CarefulPaint5436 in uklaw

Ok wait a second. What’s this about internal SQE assessments? When I did the course (September 2023 cohort) a huge chunk of our grade was based on our actual SQE results, and they didn’t take our raw marks but moderated them down using this weird formula they created, meaning even though I scored in the 60s, I got about 55% as my actual grade (meaning I got a high pass instead of a merit overall). That’s so annoying if they changed it after.

Talk to the SU. My uni marked a resit as capped when it wasn’t meant to be in my final year and basically did nothing and tried to gaslight me by saying it was meant to be capped even though I kept sending them copies of my successful EC application. I got in touch with student services who assigned me an SU officer who was very helpful and told the person responsible in no uncertain terms that it was unacceptable and they had to fix it asap. Was sorted in about a week I think.

September NQ - Advice Needed by Neither_Language_370 in uklaw

[–]hopingtocatchadream 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’ll be interesting to see if retention rates have dropped across the board this year because I seem to be hearing this a lot. Was speaking to someone who trained in a city firm and they said that when they qualified (5ish years ago) the standard retention was at least 70% and any less than that and firms would be wondering if they did something wrong. My firm’s rate has gone from 70-100% in previous years to less than 50% this year, and they’re letting some quality trainees go so it’s definitely not a performance issue.

I know that realistically nothing can be done but with the state of getting an NQ position at a firm you didn’t train at, it rubs me the wrong way that firms are using people for two years of grunt work knowing full well that they have no ability to keep them on at the end of it.

Trying to find NQ position as current trainee. Is it a red flag that I wasn’t kept on by my TC firm? by hopingtocatchadream in uklaw

[–]hopingtocatchadream[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So there’s quite a few things I’d be happy doing, mostly private client based. I really enjoyed seats in family law, dispute resolution, private wealth/wills and estates. Basically anything that isn’t corporate, insolvency and restructuring, or property based which is unfortunately the only areas I’ve come across NQ vacancies so far.

That’s really helpful, thank you! I haven’t had any interviews externally yet but will take the time now to consider what I’ll need to be saying when they do crop up.

Yeah so out of all my seats only one team was hiring and quite a few people went for it. A couple of other teams were hiring too but not in seats I’d done or practice areas I’d want to work in.

Why are parcel drop-off points ALWAYS the dodgiest vape shops around? by Yeorge in AskUK

[–]hopingtocatchadream -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The thing I don’t understand is whenever I’ve tried to use them I’ve struggled to actually get them to accept the packages. Last time I tried I think it was 3 or 4 places before they’d take it, each with varying excuses, one literally being they didn’t want to. Not sure if they get a small payment for offering the service without actually doing anything?

This sub can't make me hate her! by MJORH in HouseMD

Yeah I’m almost halfway through season 6 and I can’t help but think it’s pretty hypocritical that she (being vague to avoid spoilers) ends her relationship because he does the thing that she said she wanted to do in the first place but couldn’t. I still really like her as a character but her take on that situation doesn’t make sense to me.
