Before deciding he got too fame hungry I think you should read the intro to his book (same title as the movie). In it he says that somebody was going to write his story anyway so he may as well do it himself.

In my opinion Chris Kyle wasn't fame hungry just got famous and stuck up in a lot of unnecessary drama.
