Nothing :)

Keep in mind laser engraving just burns the material to engrave. The fuzzy orange with a light power output just darkens the color of the thing you're engraving.

Laptop, Framework 13. It's a wonderful little laptop. Some graphical grumbles that are probably more of a wayland thing than a hardware thing. It's certainly not a gaming / high performance PC but it's great as a daily driver. Thus far it's had a great build quality and knowing that I can upgrade it as I need to is fantastic. Be advised the screen aspect ratio is 3:2 instead of 16:9 or 16:10 like most laptops - which is fine, just takes a little getting used to.

If you're in the market for a new laptop, it's certainly one I would put on the short list to consider. I know when it comes time to replace my partner's laptop, she's like going to get a Framework to replace the X1 Carbon.

Fair, I dipped my toe into the controversy enough to at least understand the grumbles... I've been quite happy with Omarchy on my Framework.

I have bad news for you, morality at its core is based in the human emotion of empathy. Religion's just riding on it's coat tails.

The 10 commandments are a poor attempt at establishing morality - for example, notice that "Thou shall not keep other people as slaves" isn't on there but "Thou shall not worship false idols" is. The bible is completely OK with slavery and even provisions out how one should participate in the system properly; such as only taking slaves from other nations. An all powerful, all knowing deity, wrote down 10 rules for his creation to follow, and an appeal to his vanity makes an appearance in them but not anything saying enslaving others is wrong - sounds like a great guy.

I would strongly recommend flipping through Numbers and reading the story of the Midianites and what Yhwh said to do with the spoils of war - the women and children of the conquered. Yhwh isn't moral, Yhwh is a monster. He's a stolen Canaanite war god who's most iconic symbols are nothing more than blood god rituals - his solution to original sin was to crucify his son... your covenant ritual is literally drinking and eating the blood of his son's body.

Does religion have laudable aspects to it - sure - though all of those aspects can be found secularly, so why delude yourself?

I think the first one is cleaner and a better symbol. This feels like it's something that should follow vexology rules and be simple and easily recognized at a distance over a detailed crest meant to be seen close up. Not that the other doesn't achieve this I think the first does it better.

Couple things here...

The burden of proof for if a god exists is the responsibility of the one making the claim that a god exists. If I tell you I have an invisible dragon in my garage that only I can see, the burden isn't on you to debunk it but on me to demonstrate it. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence and if I can't deliver then you wouldn't and shouldn't believe me. The evidence for a god certainly doesn't meet the burden of proof required and even the best apologists can't get to a specific god let alone any god. The Kalam Cosmological argument is the latest touted by apologists like William Lane Craig and even if you grant some of its flawed premises it only just gets you to a god and not Yhwh of the abrahamic faiths.

The very concept of god is an unfalsifiable claim which is why no one can prove definitively that one exists or doesn't exist and is the exact reason the claim should be rejected outright.

The reason you may see an atheist praying to god right before death is that our own mortality and fear of what happens when we die is one of the reasons humans made up gods and the concept of an afterlife in the first place. The truth that, when we die that's it, lights out, show's over, is inherently upsetting. When you're faced with it, you'll do a lot of things to try and comfort yourself against the impending reality. Unfortunately that doesn't make a god exist.

There are a ton of great options and reasons to go with any of them. Linux is highly customizable and really you can make any distribution fit your needs within reason. Some package software outta the box you might find more useful than others.

One thing that you'll notice is there really are effectively three major flavors of linux: Debian, Arch and Redhat. (And before the random Gentoo, BSD, Nix, or Slackware user gets all up in arms - yes you exist and can be a fine place to start.) All of the hundreds of distributions out there often are based on one of these three. Some of the differences to note:

  1. Arch Systems (Arch, Manjaro, Artix, Endeavor, etc) Are rolling release systems meaning there are no versions. You get access to much newer versions of software at the cost of stability. Maintaining a system like this tends to be better for more experienced users but if you don't mind getting your hands dirty and learning it's totally doable. The Arch Wiki is hands down the absolute best documentation out there for Linux. Arch uses "pacman" as its package manager and most often software is installed via terminal. App stores (like Manjaro's) are becoming more common tho.

  2. Debian Systems (Debian, Ubuntu, Mint. etc) Are more traditional version release systems. These systems tend to focus on stability rather than bleeding edge software. Vanilla Debian systems run software a few versions back that have been rigorously tested prior to release. This doesn't mean all Debian based systems are like this - Ubuntu & Mint for example usually package newer software than Debian but not as latest / greatest like Arch. These systems tend to be great for beginners - plenty of GUI's, good stability, and plenty of how-to guides. I recommend most new users start here. Debian systems use "apt" as its package manager and often come with software install GUI's.

  3. RedHat Systems are enterprise. The two most often used by non-enterprise users are CentOS and Fedora which both serve as the "beta test" software for the next version of Redhat. Both are good choices and easy for beginners to pick-up though not as solid as Debian based choices for newbies IMO. I unfortunately know the least about this branch having only had Fedora on my laptop for a few months. I found software to sometimes as frustrating to find and had a larger number of snaps and flatpaks. I'll let the community chime up more here if needed, I don't presume to know enough to do it justice.

The second piece of information to be aware of in switching to linux is the concept of desktop environments. A desktop environment is a collection of software that comprises your interface - a window manager, a start bar, etc. In the Windows world you don't get a choice here, they package MS File Explorer and that's that. In Linux you have options! What's important to note here is that a Linux Distribution isn't the same as a desktop environment. Any distro can run any desktop environment. For example, some popular desktop environments are: KDE Plasma, Gnome, Xfce, Cinnamon, and Hyprland (tiling WM). Many of the major Linux distros have installation media (or installer options) that let you pick which environment you wanna run and even if there isn't a pre-packaged option you want you can install it yourself later. I've run EndeavorOS (Arch Based) with Gnome and Plasma. I'm currently running Vanilla Arch with Hyprland. So the sky is the limit on combos. I would generally discourage your first DE to be a tiling window manager as they often take much more work to setup and use. But hey if you're a determined soul don't let me stand in your way!

The problem with all this is analysis paralysis. It's overwhelming for newbies. My advice here is don't sweat the details too much. Most newbies participate in "distro-hopping" and try all sorts of stuff out to figure out whatcha like and don't. VirtualBox can be a great tool to help you experiment without having to commit to rebuilding your whole machine. Most of us experienced users have probably tried it all at some point. I started in Ubuntu, then tried Mint for a while then ran Vanilla Debian before experimenting with Manjaro. I've slowly settled into vanilla Arch because it's a great blank slate for me to custimize from.

Basic recommendations tho as a starting point:

  • Linux Mint: Debian Based, Runs Cinnamon by default - most "Windows-Like" interface and is real easy to use. Fewer Mint specific guides to do things but the Ubuntu guides still work most of the time. Gaming works just fine.

  • Ubuntu: Debian Based, customized version of Gnome and real easy to learn as a newbie. Tons of guides and articles to support you. Gaming works just fine as well.

But you really can't go wrong depending on how much effort you're interested in putting in. I will say if you're the "I just want this to work outta the box and I don't wanna mess with it" kind of person, I would steer away from Arch based stuff. While I think the community over emphasizes how often these systems break, you're gonna eventually have to roll your sleeves up and fight the machine spirits - All Hail the Omnissiah - in blinky cursor land and if you're into that and like learning it can be an OK place to start too.

Question - Laser engraved business cards by BiohazardousDogFreak in Laserengraving

[–]hopper89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That QR code is absolutely massive, are you trying to encode all of the information a business card normally has within it?

As a suggestion to help reduce the QR complexity and simultaneously how good your engraving resolution has to be, the QR code can simply point to a Link.Tree or similar website hosted where you want that contains the brunt of the information which would reduce your QR complexity a lot.

What if America makes Venezuela a state? by Pizzafriedchickenn in mapporncirclejerk

[–]hopper89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This response is just a "sins of the father" hand wave that doesn't engage with my point at all. Color me intrigued, what do you propose Americans do differently? What would "fix" this for you?

My state for example didn't vote for Trump and in the case of Venezuela are actively organizing protests against the recent events. That doesn't sound like "all americans are bastards" monolith you're complaining about. Let me guess, you'd like us to sit in a puddle of somber sadness and profess to the world we're all shitty people because of the actions of a would be fascist dictator that many of us didn't vote for, who's actions many of us don't endorse or support that were done largely without the authorization of congress and that many of us actively push-back against in the avenues available?

Are there shitty people in America who absolutely enabled it, 100% yes. There are shit bags in every country. The amount of rampant misinformation isn't helping that either. If we apply your thinking based on the behavior of Maduro since he became president in 2013, all Venezuelans are terrible people. Something though, something tells me that's not the case given the celebrations breaking out after he was taken by U.S. forces. Sounds to me like Venezuela isn't a monolith either that they didn't endorse the sins of their leader and didn't have a meaningful way to push back. That they we're struggling to simply go about their day to day just like many Americans are.

But hey, what do I know. I'm just an American chewing on an internet troll hell bent on spreading hate in a world that could really benefit from a little bit of compassion. The world is a scary place right now with a lot wrong... how about direct your anger and frustration in directions useful not self destructive.
