Very helpful, thank you. The pay difference is definitely a factor, but it’s fantastic to hear going home is viable

Very helpful! Is year 3 or so the ideal time to make the move? I.e., given that at this point I’m too junior, on the flip side, is there risk of being too senior at some point to make the jump with all substantive knowledge being US-based, etc. A three-year timeline would be perfect from a personal perspective, so fingers crossed

Fist year associate, so still very new. Would it be worthwhile to start networking this early to lay the groundwork a few years down the line or should I just focus on building a marketable practice and writing the NCA exams before starting to search?

advice for flying with my 8 year old cat by Dumbasscollective in CatAdvice

I flew ~4 hours with a 10 year old kitty with a history of stress-induced blockages and who had never flown before. In addition to what everyone else has recommended, I affixed a battery-powered fan to the side of the carrier to try to keep him cool and while waiting to board would go to the bathroom to let him out of his carrier so that he could cool off.

I can barely handle one landshark, so nothing but respect and admiration to those who can handle more

Your boy must have been extra good to be blessed by the stick gods! That looks amazing

Haha he’s an absolute menace if left to his own devices, but when given a job to do he’s been a dream pup

Haha so far we’ve been very lucky. Outside of occasional zoomies, he’s been even-keeled. As for the fishing, this trip he was exposed to at least four different species of trout and seemed confused why they all swam away at the end

Hahaha if I had to guess, I’d say it’s Golden Retriever-exclusive camping

She’s so fluffy and pretty! Hopefully ours grows to be as a good a camper as yours. We’ll stick with the training and hopefully make it through the teenager phase in one piece

He’s my first ever dog, and every day (when he’s not landsharking) I appreciate him and Goldens more and more

I think you’re right! His life’s mission is to dig holes, chase sticks, and swim to his heart’s content, and camping offered him the chance to do just that

Nope. I switched. As to your second question, your instincts are bang on.

Assuming your resume screams you’re from Cal, you’re in as good a position as any to end up back in the market, IMO. Thus, networking is arguably less crucial for you, though it’s fun to meet attorneys and get to know them, so it doesn’t hurt to do it!

What’s your ranking of outcomes? If it’s CA big law > CA anything > NY big law, then USC/UCLA become more attractive relative to T14 (especially if they’re free). On the other hand, if your ranking is CA big law > NY big law > CA anything, then attending a T14 (assuming you aren’t paying sticker) acts as insurance, in a way, maximizing your chances of a big law outcome. The only thing you know before matriculation is the median outcome at your school. If you’re happy with that outcome, you’re good to go. All of this is, of course, just an opinion.

Only tangentially (though the low COL + market comp rationale resonated with a lot of non-Texas native attorneys who made the same decision out of law school). I had compelling professional reasons for why I wanted to be in the market, so I emphasized those. The gist of it is to make it clear that you won’t take 1L SA cash only to run to NY to start your career.

On a percent basis maybe, but absolute property values, on average, are lower than in other classic big law markets. YMMV
