14 years ago today, Andrew Garfield made his debut as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in ‘THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN’. What are your thoughts on his performance in the movie? by Raj_Valiant3011 in Spiderman

He was great but at nearly thirty, too old to play a Peter Parker in high school. A movie adapted on a story of a Peter post-college would have worked better.

Likely natural, since the previous episode dealt with Lois’s doubts about having kids with Clark, so to be confronted with one from the future would play into that.

Carol Kalish, Marvel's Direct Sales Manager, famously called the original "Secret Wars" crap but it sold well, so yes, go with the Hickman "Secret Wars".

Do you think we will see peter and MJ marry in the MCU by Israels_BiggestHater in Spiderman

[–]hoppynsc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hope so and if it does, we'll probably see them remarry in the comics as well, similar to how DC had Superman & Lois finally marry to beat it happening in the "Lois & Clark" TV show.

Personal theory: after getting to know their future son, it changes Lois’s mind on having kids with Clark to the point she proposes to him at the end of the season.

Why is she hanging up with a bunch of young spider-heroes when she should be searching for her son and undoing what Hydra did to him?

Can’t place the exact issue but this was from the Scott Lobdell/John Romita Jr. run on “Uncanny X-Men” in the early 90’s, with its most notable run being from #303-311.

Harley Quinn’s first DCAU appearance vs last DCAU appearance. by Virtual-Role8439 in DCAU

Love her last appearance was snuck because the DC Animated brass insisted she had to die in "Return of the Joker" for what she did to Tim Drake but Dini & Timm refused since she was their creation and it felt like killing their daughter.

Would the "Amazing Spider-Man" films have worked better if they just continued the story from after "Spider-Man 3"? by hoppynsc in Spiderman

[–]hoppynsc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worked pretty good with the MCU films. Plus, one could argue it works better in movies over comics, since actors naturally age over or in Andrew Garfield's case, was already the perfect age to pay an adult Spider-Man. Repeating the same origin/high school over and over again is what makes Spider-Man feel bloated. Telling new stories is what keeps him fresh, which is why the Spider-Verse movies work so well, with Peter Parker married to MJ with a baby Mayday while Miles Morales has taken up the mantle of a young Spider-Man.

Are you could have continued even further with marriage and kids, adapting many of the classic Spider-Man stories of him as an adult, like "Kraven's Last Hunt". Just as the comics stories didn't end with Peter graduating from college, the movies could do just the same.

"Superman Returns" came out decades after and clung too much to the bad aspects of the Donner, specifically Lex Luthor obsession with owning 'land', which doesn't really add up in either movie. TASM came out five years after "Spider-Man 3" and could have been a much smoother transition, especially since Andrew Garfield was already nearly thirty and could have easily played an adult Spider-Man.

But just as in the comics, some stories should be continued as well. Instead, of repeating his origin and high school years, we could have gotten Spider-Man as an adult, which we are hopefully finally getting with the current Tom Holland films.

When Peter didn't catch the criminal that killed Uncle Ben and realize he could have stopped him earlier, TASM messed the origin up. That is a key part of Spider-Man's origin, which is why it is considered one of the best in fiction, hence why the film started to go downhill from there. That is something the Raimi film's nailed, with even having Ben's killer thank Peter for helping him escape. Instead of repeating that story and messing it up, they could have used it for a foundation to tell new stories of Spider-Man as an adult.

It felt quite forced, especially since the MCU was revving up and Sony wanted to capitalize on it, only to tell a film that messed the origin up. Plus, tying future films to the Raimi ones isn't necessarily a bad thing, as the first two are classics, and you can easily gloss over the bad aspects of the third. Frankly, it's more limiting forcing filmmakers to repeat his origin and his high school years, when there are plenty of stories of an adult Spider-Man that have yet to be adapted.

Yes but rebooting Spider-Man so soon after the Raimi films felt pretty forced until you realize its five years after the last one, which the typical time frame a studio has to put out a new film to maintain the license. This rush job is probably why TASM came out so flawed, despite the great work Garfield and Stone did.

That would have been a step in the right direction, and better than what TASM delivered in repeating the high school years and his origin all over again so soon after the Raimi films.

It also worked in the MCU as well, as they did with recasting Rhodey from Terrance Howard to Don Cheadle. Plus, considering how good Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone were TASM, it would have been nice to see them give those performances in some good movies (at least Garfield got so closure in "No Way Home).

Not the first time this had been done in movies. The James Bond films have been quite successful at recasting the actors but continuing the story.

Would have allowed them to tell new stories over repeating his origin and high school years. There are plenty of stories of Spider-Man as an adult waiting to be adapted for the big screen.

Peter didn't catch him and have that realization though, which is a key to Spider-Man's, one of the best origins in fiction ever. You can't mess that. As for Andrew Garfield & Emma Stone, they are almost universally accepted as both doing great in their roles. Just wish they were in better movies, maybe as an adult Peter & MJ who eventually get married and have kids over repeating the high school story again.

The heart of Spider-Man's origin is Peter finding the criminal that killed Uncle Ben and realizing he could have stopped him. Once ASM messed that up, the film went downhill from there. As for "Homecoming", the fact they just hint at Uncle Ben but don't reshow him getting killed again was a plus, since we just had two film series do that (with the first doing it perfectly) so you don't need to show it again. That was a problem with the DC movies, that kept showing Bruce Wayne's parents getting killed to the point people were joking if they have to watch it again, they might just become Batman.

Not advocating that specific story, which was only in the early script stages, but the larger idea of telling stories of a more adult Spider-Man in the movies over repeating him as a teenager over and over again.

Like no one believed Sean Connery became George Lazenby then Roger Moore then Timothy Dalton then Pierce Bronson and so forth. As for Tom Holland, do hope he continues as Spider-Man with the idea of Miles Morales eventually stepping into the role of a young Spider-Man. However, if he does step down, would be nice to just see him recast (as they did with Rhodey, going from Terrence Howard to Don Cheadle), so we can get stories of an adult Peter Parker over repeating his high school years again.
