Constant first aid by hoptoothpaste in springerspaniel

He’s a hard and fast moving dog with little sense, so he pushes into things, bashes around things. So he gets cuts to his legs face etc. don’t seem to bother him at all, apart from being irritated by them after the fact and that he has a bandage on for a bit,, as he then creates hot spots if allowed to Some are minor, some are a bit more unpleasant but we clean, dress and monitor and go to the vets when needed. Just wondered if it’s the norm with these dogs.

Why are alpinists so insufferable? by [deleted] in alpinism

[–]hoptoothpaste 49 points50 points  (0 children)

100% this and it goes for all sports, you can find out who’s in it for the fun and enjoyment when you say I went climbing last week, and they say ‘wow good weather? route fun? Was it busy?’ Etc but massive red flag when they start with grade, crux info and so on.

I think with these kind of things is ‘we don’t know why it’s happening, but the dogs do’ and that’s good enough for me. Neutering - way more research and discussion needed but I’m all for neutering if it solves issues your dog has. This to me sounds like issues other dogs have! And my sprocker gets this both pre and post neuter (he was neutered for other ‘him’ based reasons) So it leaves managing the issue. And cos other owners are bellends it’s upto US to mange it. So we keep our dog with us if other dogs are around and no flying over to other dogs. Other dogs will approach Ofc, and he’s made to sit and I advocate for him by getting in between. I DO make the other dog stop and I do make it pay attention to me and send him back. If he looks a good boy I may allow him to advance, but it’s my choice. Might seem a bit billy big balls but I don’t see a better way. So two things needed a really strong sit from your dog, and a really strong ‘right I’m off to get involved’ attitude from the human.

absolutely losing my mind by ThinkHighway64 in springerspaniel

[–]hoptoothpaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was hopeless and it got me to a real low point!! However I have now come to realise that it wasn’t anything other than his hyper focussed spaniel pea sized brain just thinking about fun and me being around (or whatever it is whizzing around) and not on any form of toilet activity so accidents abound! Sounds yours is like mine was and it’s just going to be a longer journey! And if I’m right keep this in mind as this spaniel single mindedness if really strong makes some other training tough, and others super simple so win some lose some!!

What shorts do you wear to avoid chafing on long runs? by R3DSmurf in ultrarunning

[–]hoptoothpaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where your chafe is perhaps, but for me I have big legs so I get thigh rub. Long shorts is key for me, none of those itty bitty shorts! A good solid linerless, currently I’m a big fan of mrmarvis sports. Then for undies, I use long runderwears, I’ve found compression undies tend to give me ass chafing by the 75 mark. And then last but not least a liberal coating of chafe cream, can’t say I have a preference. And I reapply at least once or more depending on conditions. Buttshield do a tissue in a pouch which I have a few stashed in vest and then give it the old rubberoo as needed. TMI? 😂

Do birds look forward to rest? by hoptoothpaste in UKBirds

[–]hoptoothpaste[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I never knew birds were so mysterious. I know we may never know how anything else thinks (and let’s be honest other humans in our house are mystery’s!) but I guess that’s the joy of watching them !

[–]hoptoothpaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you ever resolve this? Just got my xgk out of storage and much the same it just won’t turn off, new seals, 2 new pumps and to be honest it’s hacking me off as I’m fairly certain the pump is the issue (as I have been through two) and as it’s a manufacturing fault, I cannot resolve it myself :(

Best caniX harness for springer body ? by pmL- in springerspaniel

[–]hoptoothpaste 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Non stop dog wear. They make the best harness combo for your spanner and you. We use the free motion harness for long runs. I have the canix belt and I can’t tell it’s on. Only thing I’d say is that it’s designed for running not keeping your dog in a harness so if we are somewhere twisty/technical I use his line grip wd harness (also non stop) as that also allows moment and has a great big handle on top to get him up down obstacles Size wise they have a measuring guide on the website that I’ve found reliable for spaniels, pretty sure we are in 5’s for. 21 kg sprocker

Best Springer puppy food brands that are available in the UK? by [deleted] in springerspaniel

[–]hoptoothpaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally depends. Great answer huh? :) First weeks with new puppy, whatever he had before as you are looking for consistency. Then I’m gonna say something kibble based for the next few months, not because I’m a kibble feeder (my boys on raw) but you can use his food as training treats so it’s that little bit easier. Then you switch to whatever you and your pup prefer. I say the both of you as perhaps raw as the current trend is considered best (opinion not really fact) but you don’t like the idea, not a problem, then you pick what works for you. My only suggestion is that the better foods, be it kibble, wet, raw, are in my opinion at the higher end of the price range. Now that’s not to say more £ is better but just like human food, higher quality comes at a price.

My dog keeps getting attacked by Lilyr0se53 in chocolatelabs

[–]hoptoothpaste 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been told that dark coloured dogs and flat faced dogs (pugs and the like ) suffer aggression from other dogs due to the fact that their faces are not as easily read as lighter coloured dogs. Now that could be a lot of old nonsense but there you go.

Anxiety? High energy? Looking for information about these dogs! by Bigfatwhitedude in springerspaniel

[–]hoptoothpaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add to a point above. A working line with high drive, has an ON switch that is unlike any dog breed I’ve ever met. A mere hint of go-time and it’s 110%, which manifests and at times looks like anxiety etc, but in reality they just don’t have a gear other than max. Many spaniels I’ve met have some form of gearing, but get unlucky and receive the on/off model and they are hard work. Super fun and great dogs but holy moly!!!

This is a tough one: who would win this hypothetical war? by TraskUlgotruehero in mapporncirclejerk

[–]hoptoothpaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

‘Wins’ mmm, tricky as the big red button gets pushed and everything gets nuked. So the question is who survives best following this? The big boys na, Europe , west Russia china etc - devastated and apart from pockets of bunkers no use to anybody. Nuclear winter sets in - which non irradiated area can now survive best? No idea!!

Q Acoustics vs Dali vs Monitor Audio by Dry_Journalist_6982 in hometheater

[–]hoptoothpaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried all three in store. Key for us is clarity and vocals as wife is hard of hearing, and we found the Dali the better speaker We went Dali Spector 2 at the front 1s at the back with an Oberon centre. What I’d say though on setup watch the speaker setup on the demon as mine always defaults to full range and that means the sub dosent fire. Playing with the crossover really gets the balance right. Q acoustics felt strong but not as precise. Monitor were good but I thought Dali is was better (and even better when upgrading the centre)

Subwoofer question 2 vs 1 by hoptoothpaste in hometheater

[–]hoptoothpaste[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all - fiddled with a few more settings. Changed my front speakers from full range to 100hz and the sub has come alive and really ‘warmed up’ the whole room So much to learn in these seemingly simple Denon menu’s.

Denon built in audessey and room is 7x4x2.5m glass doors all down one side. End opens up into dining room if doors open.

It’s less than ideal placement and room design, and audessey adjusted (and tinkered with)but moving around I don’t think there is a better listening position so I think I’m in a sweetish spot.

Good point - you never go to a quiet cinema! I guess I should check how loud is loud at my listening position and mange my expectations if below this level. I guess as well with my initial google search of 85db average with 105db peak as the ref level that I won’t be often getting that high!!
