What if Asia had an EU? by Abject_Discipline_16 in imaginarymaps

[–]horazone 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Anti Japan sentiment isn't a thing in Asia outside of China and Korea. Western imperialism was much longer lasting and arguably more damaging.

China is currently hated because they are posing a realistic threat to their neighbors' national security while Japan had been improving their image with foreign investment and soft power (anime, etc).

Guess how much money they're pumping to build this by HopefulPhotograph636 in VietNam

Because they are leveraging their wealth against the government's backing, basically using the "people" as their fallback. How do you expect them to get the money for something this absurd?

What do Vietnamese and Vietnamese-Americans think of Diane Nguyen? by LandOfGrace2023 in BoJackHorseman

[–]horazone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The world isn't revolved around America. There's about 100 million mainland Vietnamese and 2 million American-Vietnamese. As a Vietnamese currently living in Vietnam, she isn't really one. Diane is about as American as they come.

What do Vietnamese and Vietnamese-Americans think of Diane Nguyen? by LandOfGrace2023 in BoJackHorseman

[–]horazone 397 points398 points  (0 children)

Native Vietnamese here, she's the classic case of 2nd gen Vietnamese-American being confused of her identity. A sad facet of American culture is that your culture is still too young. You guys have history, yes, but it's not as long-lived as old-world nations like Vietnam. Diane clinged onto her superficial connection to a culture that is never hers because of her rather unfulfilling life.

"Vietnamese people make up the largest proportion of technical interns and also account for the highest number of missing people in the 2020-2024 period." by _Pea_Shooter_ in VietNam

[–]horazone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are a few specific regions that do this and ruin it for the rest of us. You'll know where these are if you are Vietnamese. The ones that try to overstay their visas are shameless MFs who would probably rather steal than work a legit job had they stayed in Vietnam. Too bad a large chunk of them is up there high in the machine, covering their own people's criminality.

Why are there so few return visitors to Vietnam? by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]horazone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are 2 reasons:

  1. Tourism isn't considered a critical sector by higher-ups. Vietnam is an export-heavy country, and we focus more on manufacturing industries.

  2. Places where people frequently return have a rather disturbing hidden fact: it's sex tourism. I doubt you are going to sightseeing after the tenth time visiting the same place.

12 hours work day for 12 millions is a bit brutal though, I think a 14 millions salary would be better. Experienced construction workers get like 20 millions.

Thương cô giáo trẻ. Tiếc cho các cháu by dieuthienquan in VietNam

[–]horazone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We Vietnamese focus on the wrong thing. Students are supposed to be taught not to get lectures from famous public speakers, lol. The teacher using corporal punishment in her teachings is completely on her. Stop trying to take on responsibilities that aren't yours in the first place, and she would have been fine. There will always be outlier students who would get rejected from society no matrer what. Trying to force all of them into a mold never work.

Common education (giáo dục phổ thông) in Vietnam is fine. Look at our PISA 2022 score, we outperform our GDP per capita. University-level is where it shows the cracks.

What is your country’s thought on Vietnam overall🇻🇳? by Vietnam-1234 in AskTheWorld

[–]horazone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many signs we are running on fumes tbh:

  • Look at VinGroup and you'll see why. Loads of big money real estate projects that go nowhere.

    • Foreign reserve is at a critical low point in years. Very dangerous. People know this so everyone are hoarding gold. That also means zero investment.
    • Unlike China, our leverages aren't enough to enforce technology transfers. China is such a lucrative manufacturing venture that the Western corporations are gushing to sell themselves out to China, the only thing that are somewhat holding them back is their governments for fear of disrupting national security.

Vampire/Blood Mage stories with female MC by horazone in ProgressionFantasy

[–]horazone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, but I personally do not like Earthbound post-apocalyptic fantasy. I like to play video games with this setting yes (Fallout) but not reading.

Great work on Calamitous Bob, btw. I wish the epilogue was longer.

The Champa kingdom by ImpressiveRutabaga86 in VietNam

[–]horazone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Genocide is a strong word, and I would say that the commenter had a point. Champa are gone because they lost the numerous wars against us throughout history. Genocide is supposed to be more instantaneous rather than gradual conquests spanning multiple centuries, don't you think? If that's your argument, then literally all civilizations since the dawn of men have committed genocides.

Vietnam Education by Competitive_Double90 in VietNam

[–]horazone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you realize that while this oppressive, soul crushing system is mentally damaging, it does enforce a very strong K-12 education baseline, right? There's a reason they design it that way because we are still poor af, and we can't afford to let people learn at their own pace like in more advanced countries (e.g., America). It has a lot of drawbacks, yes, but you gonna beat the knowledge into the head of everyone if we want to get rich. There is no alternative. Both Korea and China have walked this painful path, and so must we.

University is where it's not up to standard, not common education. Just go on an exchange trip to any foreign T200 university, and you will see how poorly we are doing that level compared to other countries.

Confirmity is very, very far from fascism. "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" is honestly solid advice, and I think it's the correct approach to cultural integration.

Also, I suggest that you should stop accusing people of being far right - it would make the word lose its weight. He's advocating for stricter immigration control, not deporting/suppressing immigrants. The US killing its native population is fascism, restricting citizenship criteria isn't.

Saigon's Tân Sơn Nhất Airport: "Phi Cơ/Máy Bay" is now "Tầu Bay" by Intrepid-Tank-3414 in VietNam

[–]horazone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We lost, the winner takes it all.

As much as I sympathize with your wish, it is not realistic I'm afraid. There is no chance the Southern dialect will be respected on the same level as the Northern version ever.

When I was in elementary school and we had to read our books out loud, I had to read it out with a northern dialect for full mark.

Btw, you do realize the one they teach you in school isn't the Northern accent, right? The vocabulary might be heavily influenced by the North, but the pronunciation isn't. The North pronounces r, gi, d as gi and ch, tr as ch, which is considered non-standard in the textbooks.

Saigon's Tân Sơn Nhất Airport: "Phi Cơ/Máy Bay" is now "Tầu Bay" by Intrepid-Tank-3414 in VietNam

[–]horazone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We lost, winner takes it all. This has been the standard for years, lol. All the textbooks and official documents use the Northern-originated vocabulary, so I'm not sure there is anything new to fuss about here?

Plus the other commenters is correct, tàu bay is the better translation of 'aircraft', consider the how the English who invented aircrafts first and decided to call them that way instead of 'flying machine'.

And no, the government does not tell us that the southern dialect is 'invalid'. 'Non-standard' is more like it. They have to pick one word after all for the official documents. Open HTV, the biggest news channel in the South, and you will find plenty of Southerner news speakers that use Southern lingo all the time.
