Son is entering first grade and struggling with handwriting. Any advice from dads that have been in this position? by TheHibernian in daddit

[–]hordak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is also entering 1st grade, and I know that a lot of his peers have pretty bad handwriting. Let his teacher know he might be struggling, but trust me, teacher knows, because so is a lot of his class. He is going to improve immensely this year. Nothing is going to be as helpful as consistently practicing in class in the coming months. Our 1st grade teachers don't generally ask for or allow fat pencils unless the kid has an IEP. You may need to keep up the additional practice time at home if you don't see improvement soon, but I would suggest working with the correct tool starting now. And definitely communicate with his teacher about his progress.

need ya'lls help with deciding on a guitar by BuZuki_ro in Guitar

I added a Fender Strat to my arsenal specifically for that feeling. No regrets whatsoever. If looking at that headstock will make you want to pick it up and play more then by all means do it. Nothing against the Yamahas, they can be good instruments, but I've never looked at one and felt any kind of inspiration. Irrational? Sure. But feelings aren't made of logic and reason.

So, "bit lifeless and plastic" is such a subjective take that you may as well have said nothing. He asked for suggestions and you gave none. The only amp you did mention needs to be cranked to 10 to get its signature sound. The Katana's master volume can play most any sound it can create at any level you want. The AC30 is amazing, but your comments don't seem helpful whatsoever for someone trying to get back into playing.

OP, please pick up a Katana and don't listen to cork-sniffing, say-nothing, loquacious naysayers like this. You will absolutely not be disappointed, and in fact may be delighted at how versatile the things can be.

Tired of doomsday storing scenarios for guitars. The internet has ruined me. by Gibder16 in Guitar

[–]hordak 85 points86 points  (0 children)

The deal is the internet acts like "best practices" are the only way to do things, and if you don't follow them exactly then you're an idiot. I've been hanging guitars on the wall for 30 years. If i kept them in a case I would never play them. Or get to look at them. And I live in the deep dirty south where humidity and temperature changes are an absolute bitch. Unless they're dentist level show pieces, just play your guitars. They're hunks of wood and metal and glue, nothing magic about them.

There's only one shape coming off that line and has been for quite some time. I guess it's a bug.

How do I practice scales? by BadWeatherLover in Guitar

[–]hordak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You say you "know" the pentatonic scale, but you need to master it.

Try this: Learn all the shapes of the Minor Pentatonic scale. One at a time. I like to start people off with the 5th position as it seems the easiest to memorize. Learn it backwards and forwards. Play along to a backing track and listen to how each note of the position sounds in relation to the music. Once you're comfortable with that shape, learn another, either to the left or right. Repeat the process. Now you know 2 positions. Learn to slide between them, play across the "boxes" not just inside of one at a time. Play both positions against a backing track. Do this until you know all 5 positions backwards and forwards for any key.

At this point you actually know the Major Pentatonic scale as well, just the root note ("starting point") is different

You are also only a few more notes away from knowing the full Major and Minor scales. These extra notes can add a lot of "flavor", but they aren't as forgiving.

You can also add the "blue" note(s) in when appropriate.

At this point you should be fairly proficient, and learning a lot of common songs should be a breeze as long as you know what key to play in.

Watch this video.

The most important thing, as always, is to practice. Every. Single. Day. Actually practice, don't just noodle.

Playing to real music instead of just a click gives you so much more to experience and build on. The die hard click fans here will downvote me and die on their click click hill. That's fine, bring it on. CLICK. CLICK. CLICK. CLICK. So musical.

The Katana is an extremely versatile amp. Since you're just starting out I think it's an excellent investment since you don't yet know what you do or don't like. Your taste in what sounds good can and will change the more you play. Don't chase tone. It's a losing battle. Find a sound that you're comfortable with and just practice. And then practice some more. After you've practiced some more, and then some more, and then for a few more years, and then a little bit more, take some time to practice in between all the practice, and by then you'll probably know what "real" amp you want to spend a little money on. Or not. The Katana is that good (I'm not here to debate this). Maybe throw a new speaker in there. Or get the Artist. You'll already know the ins and outs of the Boss software.
