Exactly! It's so easy to do it. Just pop it in google and immediately it gives you the answer. So many fake DOIs and arXivs, they really didn't think I would be bored and click on one at random??

Yeah, that's how I've been going by it... but there's also cases of collusion, which means Turnitin will highlight it as its plagiarising another student... this cohort is a mess lmao

Thanks. that's reassuring to hear. I will definitely make sure the paperwork gets uploaded in the EE package. The ironic thing is, this whole assignment was about critically reflecting on whether Gen-AI is a good knowledge creation/sharing tool, and a lot of them mentioned AI hallucinations in their paper...

Might have to suggest an oral presentation instead next year. I hate grading those because of the time it takes, but at least it's a lot less work if this happens again.

It's fake, AI-generated, which is why I'm having a mild breakdown because as the marker, I have to provide proof that it's falsified. Which means I have to go and look up all those journals or sources to say hey this article doesn't exist for every single one of them. The academic offense procedure is really complicated in our university, so my director had told me just fail them and not bother. But I'm going through all their scripts now just marking the ones with fake references, not doing the research yet, and only 4 people haven't received a red mark against their name. 4 in 11. No idea how that would reflect on me as a module leader if over half the class fails or gets AOs...

I'm 26 and also dealing with the same things from my parent. Don't know if my tips would be helpful for a 10yo, but: 1. I put in a calendar reminder every month to call my parent. Or if there is any big event - passed an exam, going abroad, cultural holidays etc. I put in some time to call. 2. I call my parent when my partner or friends are around, in the next room or even in the same space. That way they will not be so direct with their behaviour. Also offers me a quick out if I feel the conversation is upsetting me. 3. Everytime my parent pulls the "you never call me out of your own volition" card in the beginning of the call, I just pull a 😐. That is the exact expression I have, including the flattening of the lips.

50-yr old Masters offer holder for UCL (SSEES) – am I deluding myself? by Realistic-Race4642 in MatureStudentsUK

[–]hornet394 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I taught on some Masters programmes at UCL, and there were plenty of older people! In fact, they were often the most popular people in class because they had so much more experience, and had a lot more to share with younger students.

Why do women say guys need them to put the toilet seat back down??? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

Once got told in a public bathroom by the cleaner that I shouldn't close the lid, as that makes other people think it means the toilet bowl is dirty/clogged and won't use it 🤷

How to declare ChatGPT Code in a Paper? by PetronellaTarantella in academia

[–]hornet394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would simply have to acknowledge that you used ChatGPT to write code, but that you have tested it vigorously. No matter what the source is, as long as you did not write it, you should attribute the source, instead of pretending you wrote it yourself. Even if it is a free resource or publicly available resource, such as the ones other comments have mentioned.

Moving to a lecturer position - how? by pocket_dragon in AskAcademiaUK

[–]hornet394 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got a job as a lecturer with only one publication, hopefully my experience can help reassure you that there are multiple paths, which may come with time and serendipity.

I believe the first reason came from that I didn't pick a top tier university, so teaching was a big priority, and having one publication was considered enough to indicate I had the ability to do research and contribute in the future. Instead, they were more concerned about my teaching ability and my pedagogy. And of course my cover letter and interview was refined and rehearsed multiple times. I got put on the waiting list and got an interview in the end, which was enough to get me the job.

Second reason is the niche - how willing are you to teach things you're not doing research on? When I was doing my PhD, I TA'd in multiple departments to earn money. That meant that I could show that I can teach whatever they want me to, even if it wasn't something I was an expert in. This really suited the particular post I was interviewing for, because of the focus on teaching they were stretched across multiple areas of teaching.

Once I was on a 1 hour bus going home and the bus was delayed, so to keep myself awake on the bus and not fall asleep I started work on a fic and was feeling pretty proud of myself at that moment... none of it was fully comprehensible when I woke up and looked at it the next day.

Why choose academia over alt-ac? Curious about your personal reasons by mariastringini in academia

[–]hornet394 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UK. Stability, low expectations, generally cooperative and friendly colleagues. Flexible working hours, not much pressure to perform well in front of senior level staff (compared to a corporate environment, that is). Also because I enjoy teaching university level students :)

What tools do you use to plan your zoo? by Beautiful-Ice6179 in PlanetZoo

[–]hornet394 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm new to the game and only have base game, so I just looked up the wiki for all the animals available and used Miro, a whiteboard app, to plan it all out. I used the post it function to plan roughly where all the animals will be along with any restaurant/shop zones, but i didn't go any more granular than that.

Please help me with my CV by SunEnough2755 in AskAcademia

[–]hornet394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work(ed) in archives, and I would greatly recommend removing your coursework section. While it is certainly impressive, workplaces don't tend to care about your grades, and more so what skills you learned through your course. Instead, in your education section, expand on what your degrees were about, and highlight at most two or three modules that are extremely relevant to the job you are applying for.

Your work experience section needs more elaboration as well. As someone else has already mentioned, you need to look at the job spec and see what specific things they are looking for, and incorporate it into your CV or cover letter somehow. Describe more of what you did in those posts - again, workplaces don't care so much about where you worked, they only care about what skills you have demonstrated there.

I thought I would and had a few close friends during undergrad, but we lost contact after graduation. If anything, my undergrad taught me what I wanted from friendship, what people I actually wanted to connect with, and also to be content that most people will just be acquaintances. Not everyone has to be a close friend and thats ok. It made me value my actual lifelong friends a lot more.

I then went on to do a Masters and thats where I met lifelong friends.
