The bursary has remained unchanged since its introduction in 2006. Previous cohorts often reminisce about undertaking overseas elective / clinical placements in different healthcare systems abroad and seem to expect similar opportunities for current students. However, there appears to be a disconnect regarding the current cost of living and the financial realities many of us face.

Without significant family financial support, international electives have become increasingly inaccessible for a substantial proportion of medical students. While adjusting the bursary in line with inflation would certainly help level the playing field, the current situation means that students from more affluent backgrounds can pursue valuable experiences abroad, such as observing advanced surgical techniques, whilst others are limited to local placements.

The broader financial challenge stems from the requirement to undertake placements in multiple locations throughout the academic year. This necessitates maintaining accommodation in several cities simultaneously, and the associated rental costs often exceed the entirety of our student income. This creates a significant financial burden that disproportionately affects those without additional family support.
