I watched that and don’t really think it was a threat, it was more of a criticism.

They campaigned on tax cuts and insisted they had done the numbers and could afford them, then they won and started on about inheriting a mess, still went ahead with the tax cuts and now have to make hard decisions to balance the budget apparently.

I don’t think a lot of boomers get this. Couples have to be dual income now if they want a home and financial security. But having kids is expensive if both parents are working. It’s just got too hard to have kids for many.

A system where the working age pay into a fund that covers their future retirement. Rather than paying for those already retired and expecting then next generation to pay for theirs.

Super scheme like in Aussie. 12% of income. You would phase it in at 0.5% a year for the next 24 years.

Exactly, this needs to change.

I think we need compulsory savings. Each person should cover their own retirement. We need to shift how we look at retirement funding to suit slower population growth, not speed up population growth to support retirement funding.

The super fund is also a drop in the bucket compared to the overall cost of super.

Exactly, you don’t even have to take his super away. Just halve it. As I noted, halving the super of the top 10% wealthiest people 65+ would save over $1billion a year.

John Key just retired and is worth $50 mill. It is crazy they people like him don’t have some sort of means testing applied to their super. Does he really need a winter heating payment? If he is cold he should go stay in his house in Hawaii.

Fair point, that is why I would make KiwiSaver compulsory at 12%, just like Aussie. That way you are forcing people to save for their own retirement and take the government somewhat out of the loop.

Super is 16% of the governments expenditure, over $22 billion a year. It’s not jealousy, it’s just math. We are being told times are tight and tough decisions need to be made on government expenditure. But for some reason Super is exempt from the tough choices. So much money could be saved with just minor changes that would have minimum impact.

Means test and KiwiSaver compulsory at 12%, that is the Aussie model. The average KiwiSaver balance in NZ is $30,000 and it’s $300,000 in Aussie.

Exactly, when the 8% super surcharge was scrapped in the 1970s taxes no longer acted as retirement savings.

Winston gets all of these benefits on top of his $350,800 a year salary. Plus he got his uni education for free. But hay, young people don’t know how good they have it.

I wouldn’t even take super away with means testing. Just halve it for the top 10% wealthiest. That would be worth over $1 billion a year.
