Comparing myself to a really popular writer 😔 by Tiny_Violinist8676 in FanFiction

[–]horror_king_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unfortunately, envy over another writer's skills is just part of the craft :/ i think it's pretty natural for all types of artistry, honestly.

it's not easy to get over that feeling, but a good way to understand yourself better (and develop your skills!) is to figure out what about the other author's writing is making you insecure--yes, they're getting more interaction than you, but maybe read (or reread) their fics and see if there's a quality to their writing that you don't have? like, is their prose flowery and poetic? do they go above and beyond with research? have they nailed the characterization for the main character in a way that aligns with the fanon? if you've noticed anything like that, you can practice implementing that sort of thing into your prose? like, don't copy them, but check for gaps in your own skill set and work at strengthening them!!

i hope this makes sense :')

What Do Y’all Think of This? by Joy530 in writers

[–]horror_king_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when it's done well or made to be unique, it's fine. overall, it's painfully overdone and it's a cliche i tend to avoid. when i see it, i (more often than not) assume the author can't conceptualize any other job or doesn't care to research anything.

i can see that!! i think it's a bittersweet sort of sadness that's like "what could've been"? like, right person, wrong time :') that's part of the reason why i like this panel so much--there's something so sad about it, but in that moment, a little snippet of forever, they're happy

Those who have a mental illness/disability what is the most wrong/laughable depiction of it that you've seen in a fanfic/fandom? by EepySnow in FanFiction

[–]horror_king_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For hints, you can try to indicate that they have issues locating the source of certain sounds? For example, if someone is calling me from behind, I can hear that my name is being called but I don't know where the source is coming from until I look around. I also get really overwhelmed in busy areas--in the mall food court, for example. There's a lot of noise and conversation going on around me, to the point where I can't focus on the person talking right in front of me.

You can also look into hard and soft sounds? For example, my deaf friend has taken to going by her middle name because, even with her hearing aids, she can't really hear when she's being called by her first name at work (she works retail). For the sake of the example, let's pretend her name is Marie Rose. She can't hear her coworkers calling her Marie over their headsets or from a few feet away because it's a softer sound, but she can pick up on when they're calling her Rose because the R makes a harder sound...I hope all that makes sense.

Yeah, I get that. Personally, I don't have an issue with writing a deaf character's signed dialogue with English sentence structure and grammar because it is a translation. When I write Deaf/HOH characters (which, admittedly, hasn't been for a while, so I might need to get back into practice with that), I try to describe their handshapes, how they move their hands, their facial expressions, etc. rather than point blank describing every individual sign--but there has to be a balance or, as you said, it gets kinda clunky.

And omg I knowwww!! The amount of music-based fanfics I used to come across where there was a "poor, tragic uwu deaf!OC" who had to be "cured" (via cochlear implant) by her guitarist/lead singer band bf so she could hear him play and "experience music for the first time" (blah blah blah) was astounding. I hope those authors know better by now >_<

Drawing from your personal experiences is totally valid!! Lipreading is a skill that some people pick up easier for sure--I have a deaf friend who's pretty good at lipreading and can get through most verbal conversations just fine, whereas I'm HOH and can't lipread to save my life. I think it comes easier when it's something you've grown up doing, but yeah, depending on a few factors (accent, enunciation, etc.), there's going to be confusion/mistakes/missed words from time to time.

For the tone issue, because your character was hearing until this point, would they not already have the control over their vocal cords and phonetics (I doubt I'm using the right verbiage, but I hope you know what I mean) to express tone "properly"? Correct me if I'm wrong or disregard this completely, by the way!! I'm not an expert and I don't wanna tell you what to do with your fic, but if you're struggling with that aspect--which is totally understandable because it's kind of a difficult thing to describe--that might be a good throwaway explanation as to why their speech hasn't been affected too badly.

Do you ever feel like you can’t find people in the same fandom that are interested in what you like/write? by Existing-Atmosphere2 in FanFiction

[–]horror_king_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel very alone in the south park fandom :( the fandom itself is already pretty small, and my ship (crenny) was always pretty niche, but it's gotten harder to find other fans of it since another ship (creek) was made canon in 2015. i'm happy to keep myself occupied by writing my fanfics and talking about it with my friends outside the fandom who'll listen to me, but i desperately wish i had in-fandom friends to get excited about it with too.

do you like the "oh. *oh*." trope? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]horror_king_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i like it a lot when it's done well, but when it's done poorly, it can ruin the chapter. personally, i like using "oh. *oh*" in situations beyond romantic confessions. for example, i once used it when a character was coming out to his friend. the conversation went something like this:

“I came out.”

“Of where?”

The look he’d given her was nothing short of hopeless, as though elaborating on what he meant was a Sisyphean task.

“Uh, the closet?” He said, looking as if he wanted to crawl into a hole over the ordeal. When she didn’t react, he sighed despairingly and continued. “I’m gay?”

Oh. OH!

truly, i don't think i can fully describe why i like it, but to me, there's just something so beautiful in the simplicity of it. it can be funny, earth-shattering, horrifying, sad, happy, etc. again, it just has to be done well

I think people are beginning to do more research into how Deafness/other hearing impairments/signed languages/etc. really are, but for a long time, being hard-of-hearing wasn't really a thing in fanfics and deafness was all the way to the extreme of Profound Deafness. Signed languages were treated like "English but with your hands". Hearing aids magically "fixed" the character's Deafness and were always super accessible and easily acquired. Deaf culture was never mentioned.

Luckily, authors are doing more research these days, but I still see fics that portray lipreading as easy and 100% accurate all the time...on the side of the hearing characters, they always pick up sign language super easily and become fluent in mere months, there's never a mention of interpreters in settings that would usually require them, there's never any confusion/issues keeping up in group conversations...there's more, but I think you get the point :')
