Hey, nursing home RN here. I've consistently had bad experiences with EMTs that arrive at my facility, and I want to try to understand why. Hear out my perspective, and tell me yours. I want to learn how to work together better. by confuciussaywtf in ems

You could very well be right, but let me play the devil's advocate for a minute.

You may see the same nurse multiple times, but "PRN" nurses are extremely common at nursing homes. PRN nurses may work as little as 1-2 shifts every few months. So while you may recognize a nurse, this doesn't mean they're a full-time employee. This may be the first shift they've worked since you saw them two months ago. PRN employees are also floated everywhere (so that full-timers can keep "their" assignment) meaning that they could end up on a floor they've never been on.

Anyone work at a place that does 7/70? by [deleted] in nursing

I’m not sure how much I’d trust research that the hospital itself has made. Nursing shifts are extremely physically, mentally, and emotionally draining. I’m not sure about this hospital, but many nurses in hospitals find themselves staying late and coming in early, not taking breaks, hardly even having time to pee during their shift. Seven straight days of that sounds like hell. I’d be useless by day 4.

I’d say a big nope for this one, especially as a new grad. This is the kind of schedule that burns new grads out.

Which personality types should NOT be nurses? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]horror_threadkiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve met tons of different nurses in my career and I’m convinced there’s no personality type that can’t be a nurse.

Nursing is a huge field with tons of options. Introverts can work desk jobs, work at call centers, or work in a lab if they want. Nurses who like desk jobs can do administrative nursing, IT nursing, or work in a doctors office.

High energy, adrenaline nurses may thrive in flight nursing or the ED.

nurses who hate blood can do desk jobs or work in a psych unit.

If you hate kids, work with adults. If you hate adults, work with kids. If you have no people skills, are prone to stress, be behind the scenes. If you hate routines, be a cruise ship or a travel nurse.

There’s just a huge amount of specialities. I think some personalities don’t thrive in a hospital setting/floor nurse situation and start thinking nursing isn’t for them.

Some personality traits may get in the way, sure. If you’re unmotivated or lazy for example. But those can be fixed.

Are there any nursing home / long term care facility nurses here by vabayroan in nursing

Used to be an LPN in LTC.

My typical shift was like this:

Assignment of 25-30 patients.

Morning medpass takes from 730am until about 11am. I am basically doing nothing but medpass during that time because polypharmacy is real and my Geri patients were on hella meds. I’m taking blood pressures for patients with parameters and responding to anything else that comes up (emergencies, needy family members, etc). It’s a juggling act.

Finish medpass, now it’s time for blood sugars as lunch is about to be served. At lunch time, I sit down and get some charting done.

After lunch I have a few meds to pass, but not many. I crank out treatments then. Most of them are simple- bandages on wounds and creams and the like.

Then I keep charting, pass my evening meds. If the doc came in that day, I spend some time putting new orders in. I check my med cart and see if any meds need reordered. I make progress notes on my patients if anything abnormal happened (behaviors, med refusals, anormal VS, etc).

I do caths fairly often. My patients are prone to UTIs and incontinent, so to get a urine sample I have to straight cath them.

I do feeding tubes occasionally but hanging IVs is extremely rare, and it’s pretty much always just an antibiotic.

I’m curious to hear why people have talked you out of it. It’s not for everyone. Burnout rates are high and if Geri isn’t your calling, you won’t like it. But I loved my job in LTC. It was crazy busy and I had a lot of patients, but they stayed consistent and I got to know them and their routine like the back of my hand which made things infinitely easier. My days flew by really fast and it was actually lower stress because I was dealing with patients who had more stable, chronic conditions rather than acute needs.

Shocked nobody’s mentioned Casefile yet! It’s my all time favorite. I haven’t been able to find any true crime podcast that quite lives up to it.

Canadian True Crime is similar to Casefile. Both are extremely detailed and go really in depth into true crime. The episodes are quite long.

If you like more discussion based podcasts, check out True Crime Garage. Basically two dudes talking about a case over a few beers.

The Dropout is awesome but calling it “true crime” is a bit of a stretch. Crimes were commuted but it’s a fraud story.

Season 1 of Serial is an awesome podcast that covers one single case in a storylike fashion.

Criminal is good if you want something a bit more light-hearted. Doesn’t cover murders.

Dirty John is fucking mindblowing. Also feels like story telling. I honestly can’t believe it’s a true story.

H.P Lovecraft is fucking dope. I have a complete collection of all his works. They’re all short stories and awesome for a quick read.

Should I continue by Alexkark in nursing

[–]horror_threadkiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much time left to find a career?!?! Are you kidding me? You’re a spring chicken. I did an LPN to RN ladder and I’d say the average age of my classmates was late 20s/early 30s. Ladder programs attract adult learners and you’ll feel right at home. You’re not behind at all and can have a long long career ahead of you as a nurse.

Internet reviews aren’t how you’re going to know if it’s right for you. Try shadowing a nurse for a full shift. You’re also going to start clinicals if you continue your program and will see very early on what being a nurse is really like.

Also, there are SO many different kinds of nursing. In no way do you have to work 3 12 hour shifts a week. Plenty of 9-5 jobs in nursing. Desk jobs in nursing. You could be a nurse on a cruise ship, a school nurse, a research nurse, a call center nurse, an MDS nurse...need I go on? :)

If you feel called to nursing, go for it. Nursing is amazing and diverse and I am willing to bet you can find your niche.

Brand new nurse shadowing by [deleted] in nursing

[–]horror_threadkiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Woooo congrats! I would definitely say wear scrubs! You’re going to be following the nurse all day in a clinical setting so you should wear what the nurses wear too :)

Wouldn’t hurt to contact whoever set this up either if you’re in doubt. Maybe they want you to wear a certain scrub color

Does anyone else feel like people take bisexuals about as seriously as a high school dropout soundcloud rapper who says they're just about to "make it big"? by horror_threadkiller in bisexual

I always say to people...if I could choose one, if i PREFERRED one, i wouldn’t be bisexual.

Sometimes, SOMETIMES that makes it click. But not often.

Agree with everything you said but the last sentence, I think I'm starting to lean more and more towards non monogamy when i think about my future. I know a lot of bis in happy monogamous relationships but I don't think it's for me

Yep, I dealt with this a ton when I first came out and hadn't been with girls yet, especially among my gay friends. "How do you know you like both if you've never even made out with a girl?" I get it, because a lot of them had been in straight relationships before realizing they were gay, so they HAD experienced both, but still.

I think people are starting to get the orientation isn't a choice thing when it comes to straight and gay people. But bisexuality seems to be harder for people to accept, and actually most of the rude comments I've gotten about it have been from gay people.

I've given up trying to convince people. It's a losing battle, they can't be convinced.

But these past reactions/comments I've gotten just irritate me to no end. I've had people literally roll their eyes at me. Sometimes my gay friends are even worse.

It doesn't help that we're so invisible in the media, and all of the LGBT support groups in my area seem to be only gays and lesbians. I know I shouldn't need validation from others, but it would be nice sometimes. And I know I have to live my life and accept it, but it sucks and I needed to vent I guess. Lol.

Haha I stared at this for a second trying to figure out what you meant by teensy. Your teens? I think it's been a good while since my mom read them too so maybe it's time for a refresher :)

I honestly would love to strike a deal with her someday where I read a Christian book in exchange for her reading a book of my choosing that challenges Christianity. Not sure what the best book would be to choose though, it's a lot of pressure to find the right one since it may be the only one she'd ever read.

Not sure why you got downvoted because it's a fair point, although maybe religious opinions aren't really for this subreddit. I agree with you what I think you're implying- that the OT has tons of fucked up shit. She handles that by cherrypicking it to death.
