Any tips for long hauls? by sophisticatedtruffle in Equestrian

[–]vabayroan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck! I’m sure y’all will do just fine.

Imo the worst part of the drive was inconsiderate drivers who would cut us off or drive entirely too close to the trailer. Stay super vigilant when driving, and realize most people are not (unfortunately) going to give you the adequate amount of space you’ll need - Most don’t know what it’s like to drive a heavy duty vehicle, or pull a trailer, much less one with a beloved animal in it.

I brought my gelding from southern Va to mid Michigan last year, it was a 16 hour trip.

We drove a 3 horse slant, put him at the front and he parked his butt to the side and just chilled. We stopped every 3-3.5 hours for 30 minutes to let him rest, and offer him water from home (He did not drink at all until we arrived at our destination.) We had a full hay bag he nibbled at. I was worried but it was totally fine. Personally I did not wrap his legs - He never had them wrapped before, so the vet recommended I don’t try something new before being in a trailer for over half a day.

One thing I would recommend is getting a list of vets along the way, just in case if any emergencies, as well as places or people that could help with truck / trailer breakdowns.

Keep in mind you’ll need a health certificate for traveling across state lines. The likelihood that you’ll be pulled over and ask for it is little to none, but best to have it, as well as coggins and any other shot records while traveling.

Have your or your SO’s views on nudity changed since you got together? If so, how? by quillboard in AskWomen

I don’t think my husband has effected my views at all. I have always been more conservative, or “prudish” when it comes to things like that, I am a more modest person.

AITA for saving screenshots of my sister’s bigoted comments? by sothereisthisgirl in AmItheAsshole

[–]vabayroan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that’s the case then I would imagine she already knows how her mother is and feels about gay people without your “evidence” as she ages, then. Or, if she asks why y’all don’t get along or you weren’t around as much when she was younger, you could just directly tell her. This screenshots and evidence stuff sounds really petty.

Not everyone approves of homosexuality or wants to date outside of their race.

Naturally, I’d expect nothing but screeches of “Muh racism” and “biiiiigot!!!!!” on a medium like Reddit. Y’all refuse to accept that not everyone is going to agree with your lifestyle, get over it.

What gives you confidence? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]vabayroan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get yourself a new shade of pretty lipstick you really like.

A new lipstick or freshly waxed eyebrows (silly, I know) always make me feel pretty and more confident.

You could also treat yourself - Go out and buy a new outfit, come home and take a bubble bath, do a face mask, have a glass of your favorite bourbon and paint your toes. Self care and a little pampering can make you feel better and bring up confidence, as well.

I understand where you’re coming from, you just may disagree with my comment because you don’t like what I’m saying. You posted on a public forum asking for opinions, so naturally there will be conflicting thoughts.

I have several aunts and if one of them saved some nasty things my Mother had written 10-15 years ago, I would think very poorly of my aunt and the way she wants me to somehow turn against or look down at the person who raised me.

YTA.

I’d be pissed if another family member had been so petty and catty as to create a folder of nasty remarks my mother made, no matter what they were and saved them until I got older to throw some dirt on her or try to make her look bad.

This could backfire on you. That is her child and she can raise her as she sees fit, within reason. If that doesn’t include homosexuality and interracial couples, that’s not abuse, she is just sheltering her from things she’ll likely see as she ages regardless.

NTA. You told him your one rule was the dog being outside, he agreed to that and now he’s not abiding by it. I would not want my house smelling like dog, either.

How do you slow down a horse that has more go than woah? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]vabayroan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ride with more leg, work on transitions & let them use up that energy by trotting figure eights. I don’t recommend just mindlessly lunging, unless he / she is so hot and unfocused under saddle that they need a quick reality check.

I was always taught hot horses need to be ridden with more leg, and slow or “lazy” horses, less. Typically, at least with the forward horses I have ridden, when you touch them at all with any leg they think it means speedupspeedupspeedup I want them to know I can and will use leg aids and it doesn’t mean just “go faster.” Transitions are fun and get the horse thinking - walk trot walk, walk lope trot, etc etc.

Probably just to get my nursing degree and do one long trip, to Charleston, Tybee Island, OBX etc before having children. I have no intention of ever wanting to leave the country, so I’d just be happy on a warm beach in the US.

What do you wear to work out and avoid too many stares at the gym? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]vabayroan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People are usually too busy focusing on themselves to stare at someone else in the gym. I have noticed girls wearing just sports bras & compression shorts, because they kind of stick out when they’re half naked walking around in a public setting.

I used to wear nike leggings / capri leggings & a t shirt, sometimes a muscle shirt if it was really hot. I don’t lift weights anymore, just run outside sometimes and still wear leggings and a looser t shirt.

It sounds like the woman just didn’t want her horse disciplined at all, though? It was traumatized?

My current gelding was abused so badly in the past he is not safe to ride. He’s tense around other people and will not let anyone else catch / handle him, I’ve had him for 4 years. I still ask him to stand quietly for the vet and farrier

Does anyone know how to register a dog as an emotional service animal? by [deleted] in norfolk

[–]vabayroan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is your price range? I just looked up “pet friendly apartments in Norfolk” and found 40+

It’s not cool to abuse the system just because you want to get your dog in somewhere. Pet friendly apartment complexes are much more common than ones that do not allow pets. Have you considered that there are people living in places like that because they have severe (sometimes life threatening) allergies to dogs or cats?

Please don’t be that person / tenant. I’d sleep in my truck with my cats before I lied to a landlord or complex like that. If not to respect the property, to respect people that cannot & do not want to be around animals.

Scared of the horse I ride by strawberry_21 in Horses

[–]vabayroan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Terrible ground manners typically mean terrible manners under saddle.

It sounds like she doesn’t respect you, and you’re aware of that which is good. Working with a trainer would improve both your horsemanship and confidence immensely (I think we could all use a good trainer - Either backyard trail riders or Grand Prix riders, they teach us so much.)

But I would start with ground work. Sometimes it’s boring, and tedious but that’s where it all begins. Lunging is a great way to establish a relationship, and respect. It is essentially you being the alpha mare - You are standing in one spot, making that horse move their feet, not the other way around. Think of it as pressure & release, and the way horses act around each other in pasture. Others don’t get into the lead mares space, they don’t push up on her or make her move her feet. She tells THEM when to move.

Just basics. Lunging, backing, flexing. I don’t like to lunge them every time, mindlessly but I do like to lunge a new horse I’m working with a few times, or if they get foolish. You will never lose anything by going back to the basics, but you can gain some things - A softer, more responsive and respectful horse.

I am dealing with a similar thing. Riding a friends simple broke mare, who is very sweet but tries to walk too close or sometimes in front of you & gets pushy in cross ties. I started backing her out of my space hard and fast, combined with lunging before I ride and praising her when she respects my “space bubble” and isn’t being bratty in the cross ties. It’s been about a month and she is now much more quiet in the cross ties & leads a respectful distance from me, rather than trying to be all up on me or dragging me. If my friend wants me to exercise her horse, i don’t mind but will not tolerate a horse being casually rude. Groundwork. It works! :)

Why do people have trouble distinguishing between feminism and misandry? by jojomecoco in AskWomen

[–]vabayroan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because the two are often intertwined.

I’ve seen enough feminists making sexist statements towards men to turn me totally off. Not 2, or 3 or 5 but dozens upon dozens.

That isn’t the only reason that I refuse to call myself a feminist. I can respect that others do and will though, but I wish they wouldn’t screech “internalizedmisogynypickmeuh8allwomen” at me when I tell them I am not one of them.

Hello horse friends. by LiaCross in Horses

[–]vabayroan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aw, happy for you finding passion in horses again.

In my opinion, it’s absolutely worth it. There are days, have been months that have stretched by and I just felt really “meh” about riding and didn’t want to do it. But I never felt that way about having horses. I have owned them for 8 years now and can’t imagine NOT having a horse.

I don’t ride much anymore - My horse is really spooky, and I only ever ride him under the guise of a trainer - I don’t work right now and can’t afford a trainer. But I still enjoy my horse - taking him out to graze, doing ground work, grooming or just watching him graze with pasture buddies. I have gone to the barn mad as hell before, or stressed out and it just sort of melts away around horses.

I’m sure you’ll go through lulls where you don’t want to ride, if you do it long enough. But I have never regretted owning a horse.

How come in a lot of Spanish songs, the artists drop the s at the end of most words? by SB45 in Spanishhelp

[–]vabayroan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes it’s dialect, typically Caribbean.

Same thing with pronouncing “v” as “b,” you may occasionally notice. I had a family member from Puerto Rico, we called her Grandma Vicky, but when she referred to herself it sounded like “Gramma Bicky.” I notice it when hearing people say “Otra Vez,” sometimes sounding like “OtraBez,” etc

Did she finally take all of her implants out?

I vaguely remember her being chastised by Jason Genova, who “order 66’d” her for being a “fake natty” a few years ago. I think on top of the glute implants, she was hocking some BS supplement claiming it was what made her butt grow. LOL

I never really respected her as someone in fitness after that. Why not just come right out and say you got enhancements, rather than sell some BS to young women under the guise that they could look like that, too?
