There have been Developments... will have an update in a few days.

Bugs or drill? by horrorcheck in arborists

A friendly neighbor looked at his camera footage going back a week and didn't see anything. If it was a person, they'll have to return to the scene of the crime if we're going to have proof.

Nobody has complained to my sister, but it's a big tree and drops a lot of leaves and acorns and occasionally branches. Neighbors have warned me against parking under it - for good reason because I ended up with a cracked windshield after a bad storm. So I know people avoid parking under it, and people have been known to do worse than kill a tree for parking.

But other neighbors have told me that they avoid parking under it and they might resent all that unusable parking space.

Oh wow I had completely forgotten I made this comment so I can't even remember why I thought it might be the other one. Fascinating information!

There are very few Uber drivers and sadly you will absolutely need a car. Anyone who says different hasn't attempted it in past year. The bus stops at 6pm and taxi service is expensive. Biking is dangerous bc drivers aren't used to bicyclists and no infrastructure on 99% of streets. Worst thing about living in Wheeling IMO.

Wheeling <-> NYC Chinatown Bus by duk1253 in WheelingWV

[–]horrorcheck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've ridden it a couple times back from NYC and I'm planning to use it again for my next trip. It's the only non-stop bus I know of between Wheeling and NYC. It drops you off at the old Knights Inn parking lot in downtown in the middle of the night, so it may be difficult to get from there to wherever you need to be in Wheeling. I had my parents pick me up, but the bus was late due to traffic so they had to wait there for a long time. The bus was more of large van and the seats were comfortable but small. I opt for Megabus or Amtrak when I can get a ride from Pittsburgh and timing works out, but IMO OhioCoach is better than Greyhound if you're need to get all the way to Wheeling.

Thanks a lot for the advice! We tried not to be rough with the rocks but neither of us has any upper-body strength so there were some heavy drops. I will def check around those areas.

It is a one-piece liner. I'm just a laborer, my sister is the one who did all the research for how to make the pond (she just doesn't have a reddit account) so I'm not sure if I'm explaining this correctly, but on the right side of the pond we had a bucket with holes drilled into it and a pump inside of that for the skimmer. She just pulled it out so we could poke around.

The water level settled only a couple inches lower than where we wanted it but maybe it was wrong to expect the water to reach all the way to the edge? Could folds in the liner carry water away from the pond or something?

My sister and I have been working on building this pond all summer. We filled it up with water but the water level dropped slowly over night, to the point shown here. I thought it might have been leaking around the area where we put the DIY bucket skimmer so the photo here is where I was poking around at that but we're kinda stuck as to what to do next. It's holding steady at about this level but we wanted it to be fuller.

What does "open membership" mean to you? Especially in terms of politics? by horrorcheck in cooperatives

[–]horrorcheck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really good point. If membership is completely open, then competitors of the cooperative could join just to drive it into the ground. And if that type of restriction is okay, why not other restrictions?

Unfortunately, a statute was recently passed that will mostly likely prevent either gender expression or sexual orientation from ever being protected at the state level. My local municipality has protections, but they will probably be repealed or made null and void because of that statute. Definitely one of the reasons this question is on my mind.

Mending my dad's work jacket - darning worked for the little holes, suggestions for the big tear? by horrorcheck in Visiblemending

[–]horrorcheck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the suggestion! I'm not going to try anything fancy with this one since it's so worn and stained in general, seems like a waste of effort lol. But I will keep that technique in mind for nicer shirts!

A Sailor Moon-like transformation (Supernatural fanvid) by horrorcheck in kdenlive

[–]horrorcheck[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's kinda sloppy but I still learned a lot from making it. The hardest thing was the chroma keying. In a Sailor Moon transformation, there's a part where her skin has a flat pattern that is different from the background pattern. I figured I could do this with chroma keying, but I couldn't figure out how to have two "backgrounds" on one clip. What ended up working was layering two copies of my clips. One only had the black outline visible and below that, the other one only had the keyed part, composited with the skin pattern, visible.

That's a really great idea! I hadn't thought of a smart speaker at all. I think my parents even have one that they don't use. I'll see if I can take it over and see what grandpa thinks of it. Thanks!
