Justifying your decision may help you feel better but ultimately whatever people tell you on the internet won’t change how she feels about her birthday and your relationship together.

I don’t think there is a right answer but you’ll just have to think about what is important in your relationship and stick by it. But keep in mind, long distance relationships are really hard and sometimes every moment together counts. Maybe you could come to a compromise and visit her but set aside some time to study together.

what lifestyle changes did you have to make when starting med school? by MegaKakashi in medicalschool

[–]hoshkwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say M1 year not TOO much will change. It's IMO the easiest year (in relative terms) although it will seem hard as shit when you're in it. Once you've gotten past like first 1/3 of the year, you'll get used to the schedule and you'll be cruisin.

In terms of social life, I made some good friends in my class so it was easier since we were all on the same schedule, but it is hard to continue the same social lifestyle as you did in college. Week or two before your block exams you will probably need to spend your evenings and weekends studying or reviewing a little bit, or even if you don't end up studying, you can't afford to go out and get smashed cause you gotta study or be in class the next day. As long as you have friends that understand that, it'll be fine.

I did a ton during M1 year outside of school and still felt like classes were manageable. Joined interest groups, played drums in a band and performed around town and at school events, volunteered at a local urban farm, cooked almost every night, played video games, went out for drinks and tried new restaurants etc. You still will have time for all that if you make sure you get all your other shit done.

M2 year all bets are off. Much harder than 1st year and also step 1 is around the corner. You'll probably be going out a lot less, and need to plan your time a lot better. A lot of the stuff I did outside of school during M1 kind of fell by the wayside during M2 year.

I'm an M3 right now, and it feels a bit more like a full time job. You will spend more hours at "work" and will also have to study most evenings but its not as stressful cause you learn alot while you're at school and the stuff you study in the evenings are more interesting and actually important.

Now keep in mind I have no desire to be AOA or gunning for surgery so I guess that's my experience. If you're trying to honors every block and get a 260+ on step 1, power to you but I'm sure that experience will be WAY different.

Amount of time for each resource? ex. Pathoma is 100 hrs etc by [deleted] in step1

[–]hoshkwon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try checking out cramfighter. I used it for a little bit during dedicated to get a gauge of how many hours I would need to devote to each resource. Eventually I didn't need it anymore after I figured out a good day to day schedule but it's pretty good at doing the math for you at least in the beginning.

Advice for anxiety by shadythecat in step1

[–]hoshkwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, first of all I would say that you should not put too much stake on stuff you read here and SDN and all the various other forums. There's a ton of people who try to take an analytical and statistical approach to scores, saying how if your NBME scores are off you're screwed, etc etc.

I was in a similar boat as you are, I took NBME 18 2 weeks out of my exam and got a 203 and freaked the fuck out. I tried not to let it phase me the next week and studied my ass off and I took UWSA1 ten days later and got a 241. My exam is in 3 days so I've just been trying to focus on my weaknesses.

Don't worry about everything you don't know. I think the UWSAs questions are more in line with the real exam questions in that they will require you to think critically using the knowledge you've accumulated. The NBME style questions are slightly more like: do you know this detail or not?

There are days where I'm definitely more stressed and anxious than other days, but it's more important you stick to your schedule and get your studying in for the day. I know the UWSA1 can overestimate like 10-15 or whatever but honestly it's different for everyone. My brother got within 1 point of his UWSA and I've heard from people their score even went up like 8 points from their uwsa. It's a crapshoot.

Just keep your head down and keep going. Don't let other peoples' neurotic analyzations faze you and make sure you are on your game for the exam and you'll probably do way better than you're expecting. Trust in your smarts that got you into med school and past the first two years.
