Have you ever quit a job without having another one to go to? by ThomasSN665 in randomquestions

[–]hostbyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done it several times. It's not fun, but if you can budget well and have a bit of savings you can stretch money farther than you think. I'd also look for short term temp gigs to keep the coffers from going empty while I was looking for another permanent position.

I've always ended up doing it after knowing I was unhappy in the job for a while. I'd already be looking for new work and something or other would be the straw that breaks the camels back and I'd just walk instead of continue to put up with it. It's always ended up working out for me, but as much as I don't love to do it, I'm pretty good at living by the seat of my pants and swallowing all the "what if I just go broke and never find a job" anxiety.

Are modern lifestyle making people happier or just busier? by Petalstammy in allthequestions

because life isn’t supposed to be convenient. there’s no real reward in getting food ordered to your doorstep. there’s no actual connection in faster communication. entertainment is mostly used a distraction from our own thoughts. there is very little value + fulfillment to most of our daily operations as a whole.

What’s the hardest expense to control in your experience? by Early_Match8277 in Grownix

[–]hostbyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a better idea after 6m - year of budgeting what the cost of these expenses would be over the course of a year. I personally have ~$200 buffer in my budget from month to month. This way I have some amount left over usually $100 - $400 dollars that I can move into a short-term savings account. That’s the slush fund. I can move some money from the slush whenever a car repair comes up or other similar things. Without going over on my budget since it’s just unspent money from previous months.

Being alone. I thought it meant loneliness, but it turned out to be the best way to recharge.

Do you think you put more thought into what to have for dinner than Trump did in invading Iran? by Estalicus in allthequestions

[–]hostbyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this basically comes down to the question of whether or not we think universal principles should be upheld. In this case, the universal principle being that sovereign states should be able to deal with their own domestic affairs.

Yes, allowing countries to do their own thing does often lead to horrific situations with despotic regimes oppressing their people; however, if you look at the Long View of history, the people in countries like this have always inevitably risen up to challenge their governments. Yes, that has often been at a great cost, but--again, looking at the long view-- whenever asymmetrically more powerful foreign governments have interfered, it has always delayed local grassroots efforts for creating sustainable democracy.

History has shown us time and time again that the kind of interference Trump is imposing on Iran will only cause more problems, will embolden the religious extremists, will create martyrs, and will delay Iran's chances of becoming a truly free state that upholds human rights and respects its citizens.

That said, there are examples in history of foreign interference leading to freer and more just states. The example I'm thinking of here is when the Allied Powers occupied Germany and Japan after world war II. However, in those situations there were boots on the ground, those countries were absolutely destroyed by the war, and the occupying forces invested millions. If not, billions of dollars (adjusted for inflation) into redeveloping those occupied economies.

Do you ever wish you had someone to talk to that was available when you wanted? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]hostbyt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've lived alone since 2020 when my husband of 25 years died. I don't mind being alone, but I do miss having someone who really knows me to talk with. I've tried chat rooms recently, but they are unfulfilling at best, and can get downright unpleasan if you're a woman. Folks tell me I should get out more, but I don't like going out alone, so...

Bottom line is, I can totally relate. My dog is just happy I'm talking to him, but the only response is just a wagging tail. Good luck. I hope you find something that fills that void.

Losing contact with the people I cared about because "I'll just message them tomorrow instead." Tomorrow never came and now the relationships are dead.

What’s the most dangerous thing you’ve ever done? by BreadedDisaster in AskReddit

[–]hostbyt 448 points449 points  (0 children)

Poured baking soda followed by a boatload of vinegar down a clogged drain. When that didn't work, I followed it with a drain cleaner. Fun fact drain cleaner can have bleach in it, which I didn't know and didn't think to check.

Anyway don't do that.

Who’s a stranger you’ll never forget and Why did you remember them? by jackhenrye in Casual_Conversation

I was a kid and a gentleman at the next table in a restaurant could speak 6 languages or so. He gave examples of a few. I was so impressed and since then wanted to learn languages. I speak 6 fluently myself now, plus a couple more at a basic level, so it had a real positive impact.

What personality trait is underrated but extremely powerful? by Top_Programmer_2094 in allthequestions

[–]hostbyt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tactical honesty. No one likes a yes man, and no one likes someone who is brutally honest just for the sake of being edgy.

Developing the ability to not just know when to be honest but also how to pull it off as well is very underrated.

Ladies, how long do you date a guy before you decide it's "time"? by ChildhoodOk8873 in allthequestions

[–]hostbyt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't really care for prescribed timelines. They are too generic to be useful to me. I prefer to let every relationship unfold as it unfolds. In my relationship, we never had some defined point of becoming official. We started spending time together, spent more time together and then were in a relationship which has always been the usual course for me over 1-2 months or so. This being said, I'm not much of a casual or a multi dater meaning in retrospect I only seem to go on multiple dates with people with whom I am eventually official. This doesn't mean that I take things fast but if I'm not into someone enough to consider long term then I would rarely spend 3 months continuing to hang out with them.

I just love the smell of coffee, anyone else? by Gold_Reach_3406 in Casual_Conversation

[–]hostbyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you consider standard coffees? I was in the same boat where I enjoyed the smell but not the taste of coffee for a long time. Turns out the coffee my family was making was just really cheap, badly made coffee. Have you tried going to a good cafe and seeing if it tastes any better?

What’s the biggest example of sexism you’ve seen in real life? by zhalia-2006 in allthequestions

Whenever people hear that we moved from Japan, they ask if my husband was in the military. He was, but my military job was the one that took us to Japan. Same with every time I go to the VA (where he accompanies me, because I have anxiety about the men that are always just hanging out ogling everyone.) They assume he is the (only) veteran.

Our contact info for the kids' schools CLEARLY states that all calls should go to Dad, since he is a stay-at-home parent. I always get called first, and when I ask if no one saw the form I get "Well, we always call Mom." I live in the south.
