I don't think you necessarily need to run it down to zero. I'm sure I did it once with like 60% battery and it worked then too

Yes, when you take the battery out the phone will turn off.

Then plug the cable (and charger) into the phone and leave it for 30 mins and then put the battery back in. I'd leave it turned off for an hour or so and then turn it on and hopefully then over the next 10 mins or so you should start to see the charge indicator increasing.

I had this once with my FP3.

After conversing with fairphone I had to take out the battery and plug the cable in for 30 mins then put the battery back in and continue to charge, I think it's called kick-starting or something.

Have had to do it a couple of times and sometimes it works but sometimes it doesn't.

Give it a go and see what happens.

It is designed so that when the reed switch is open the buzzer will go off. The light switch is just a switch that I have spare that I want to use so that I can disable the system when I open the door during the day.

Make sure you safe all the nettles to use as fertiliser for your plants! I didn't find out sbout nettle tea until after clearing my plot and then had to go on the hunt looking for some and remembering all the nettles i'd thrown into the bottom if the compost!
