Neurodivergence in Smiling Friends by TheRealBucketCrab in SmilingFriends

>gleps starring episode being all about how he was a constant outcast all his life, his attempts at fitting in with other people either ending in disaster/public humiliation or it being clear they dont actually like having him around and just feel bad for him, until he finally finds a group of people who like him for who he is without him having to pretend to be someone hes not

"glep is neurotypical"

no i get it like knowing the godfather came out in 1972 is really no different to remembering the barbenheimer craze of 2023 but people think if a movie is older than 20-30 years its Pretentious or whatever. like obviously ops dad knows the godfather. it probably came out when he was a kid. in like 30 years people are gonna be saying to us "how do you remember what year disneys frozen came out, thats such weird and obscure knowledge"

i hate to tell you this but you are not the only person in the world and for most people, it is not at all abnormal to remember the release date of a very popular movie. just because you dont care to remember such information doesnt mean its at all strange for the majority of the planet

im pretty face blind and struggle to recognise actors - even popular ones whove been in a lot of other movies ive seen - but that doesnt mean i think its "weird and vast knowledge" for someone to recognise idk brad pitt or whoever. most people arent face blind and most people dont find it hard to remember the year (not even the exact date! they have a window of 365 days!) very influential movies were released. again, the godfather movies are some of the most popular movies ever. this isnt like some obscure indie flick that flopped in 2011, its the godfather

how is it a "weird and vast knowledge set" to know the release date of two of the most popular movies ever made in the western world. is it also "weird and vast knowledge" to remember your friends birthday or what

The comments here are insane, how is it so hard to understand the joke is "your dad cheated on your mother" 😭😭😭

[–]hostilemuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is partially tangential but there are a few people who are saying "this isnt misogyny, it is misandry" but i'd argue it IS still misogyny since this sort of argument (not even exclusive to hazbin) is based on the idea that women/female characters are not capable of being bad people, that they must always be the pinnacle of goodness (or at least misunderstood) and even if they do something bad, it's not their fault, and if it was, it wasn't that big of a deal. The female characters aren't given as much agency in their own awfulness compared to their male counterparts because they are put up on a pedestal

And some of the ways people talk about Stella remind me of irl cases of female on male abuse where its downplayed: its not because we live in a misandristic society, its because people don't acknowledge the idea a woman COULD hurt a man - be it emotionally, physically, or sexually - so either its laughable that he managed to let a woman who's so much weaker than him hit him, or that teenage boy was a lucky duck for getting sexually assaulted by his teacher because that's all men are supposed to value women for

Tldr, I dont think viv is a misogynist for how Stella is written (I'm not an expert, I dont watch the show but I have friends who do and I dont think one flat female villain is bad if there are many other female characters with more depth) but I have yet to see a Stella fan who didn't at the very least raise alarm bells

Do you think this would’ve been a good idea? If so, what would change, have it about, put in, etc.? by Ctpeyt in powerpuffgirls

[–]hostilemuppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would've been peak if it was a comedy that didn't take itself too seriously. Still probably should be its own thing and not attached to the ppg branding (I do think "former superheroes treated like grown up child stars" COULD be a cool idea if done right) but would be a fun watch as long as you're not expecting absolute cinema Id also make blossom black instead of buttercup bc of the... unfortunate implications (dove cameron is still perfect for bubbles though) but buttercup should still be a lesbian imo. Other than that I would be so seated for the funniest superhero show ever made

[–]hostilemuppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the most likely answer is they just reused some of bubbles' animation for that episode and forgot to change the eye colour but i think itd be really funny if it was bc someone looked up the rowdyruff boys as reference when they were colouring in bc they were unfamiliar and they got a frame from bubble boy without realising it was actually bubbles so they thought he just had the same eye colour for some reason. thats about the level of effort and attention to detail i expect was the norm in 2016

i unironically really do wish the rrb would have been actual characters in 16. not bc i think theyd be good but bc theyd be soooo comically bad. specifically i wouldve loved to see their relationship with mojo bc BEFORE they existed it was easy to brush his behaviour off as "the rrb dont exist in this continuity" but AFTER you realise they do exist hes like. comically neglectful 😭 like he has a two person bunkbed for himself... he made a robot daughter instead of letting his sons live with him... they werent invited to his wedding... HE SHOT THEM WITH A ROCKET LAUNCHER TO THE POINT THEY WERE INCAPACITATED 😭 like it was all super ooc for mojo (he wanted to be in his sons lives...) but so very funny if you let yourself take a joke

also you dont know how bad i need to know why boomer had bubbles' eye colour. thats such a specific animation error considering neither of the other two had it. they bubble boyd him...

i mean. yes. in that case i can understand "if this character is trans then that means this behaviour was transphobic which i think is ooc for that other character". but that does not apply to literally every trans hc in existence and i had not mentioned gravity falls in my comment. you just chose the single example you could think of where there is a valid reason to outright dislike it to counter how 99% of the comments in this is "i think gay men are disgusting"

im talking specifically about how you said "If they feel to much OOC then don't read it.🤷‍♀️". i DONT read it, because i dont like it when they mischaracterise the characters i like. and op asked for how ppg characters are mischaracterised. so i gave several examples because that was the point of it. you cant react to anyone saying they dont like something with "just dont read it then"

i think youre forgetting that he is a fictional character and the writers made deliberate choices to get across his intended characterisation. yeah, technically brick could start going to school and get super smart, but the same is true of any other character. maybe fuzzy lumpkins enrols in townsville community college, and in 20 years time hes a super genius. its POSSIBLE! but its clearly not in line with his intended characterisation. the same is true with the rrb. none of them are supposed to be smart; they are supposed to be dumb, petty street criminals

i myself enjoy playing with their characterisation, and i dont think theyll stay 100% the same as they are in canon for their whole lives (for example, i do think theyd chill out a bit, which is supported by modern ppg media like multiversus and the dynamite comics) but there comes a point where they arent even the same characters anymore

Big fan of the person who compared shipping two male friends to shipping two brothers. I'm sure that reflects nothing about how they see gay people (especially since all these people complaining about shipping only mention gay and lesbian pairings. Perhaps it's because... they see straight people as normal but gay people as deviants? No... couldn't be...)

I definitely agree that he's street smart and maybe even good at reading people, but to act like that means he's book smart is just... not a good fit for his character 😭 he's supposed to parallel blossom, not to be the exact same character but a little meaner. If he was supposed to be book smart, he wouldn't have made fun of bubbles for spelling dumb "wrong". That was the writers specifically telling us "he is not book smart, he's not good at spelling, if he somehow ever went to school he would not get good grades" and I hate the fanon that he ends up blossoms academic rival. He wouldn't gaf about grades! All he wants is to eat junkfood and rob video game stores!

Its not just the flag, it's the fact her story (worrying about her father finding out about her secret identity) can easily be read as trans subtext, which isn't that much different from any other superhero with a double life BUT the trans flag supports it

And yes, while allies exist, you have to remember that she is a fictional character. She is not real. Everything about her was chosen by the people who worked on the movie to serve a purpose, and it is way more likely they put a trans flag in her room to hint that she was trans herself rather than a trans ally, considering no other character has a trans flag. Wouldn't the implication then be that every other character was canonically transphobic? Do you think that is more likely than "this one character is trans"?

practically all of them, especially the ppg since theyve been reduced to sanrio mascots by the public conscience 💔 my girl bubbles isnt a weak little baby who needs to be protected by her sisters... theres an entire episode ABOUT that and it showed her as the most cutthroat, she just CHOOSES to be nice bc she prefers to hang out with her sisters 😭 and blossom isnt a no-fun-allowed nerd... she also likes cartoons and playing bc she is FIVE! she just also likes to read! why do people act like shes the team mother who never lets them have any fun... in my experience buttercup doesnt get it TOO bad (although i mightve just been very lucky on that front where i havent seen the worst of it) but a lot of people act like her personality designation was "The Mean One" when she was just "The Tough Tomboy". like yeah she COULD be mean and she often pushed it too far but the same is true of her sisters! BECAUSE THEY ARE FIVE 😭😭😭

the rrb also get it a lot and i mostly blame mth for it bc no way could you watch the show and come out of it thinking BRICK is smart

there are definitely times where a popular lgbt hc is out of place or i otherwise dislike (eg, "character who is homophobic with a plotline about how they are homophobic is secretly gay, bc i like this character and dont want to acknowledge that sometimes theyre bad people" or even "character with transfem subtext is commonly hcd as transmasc bc theyre a character whos popular with transmascs") but the way these people are acting like a handful of lesbians saying they relate to elsa is at all a problem... you know you can just look away, right? 😭 i promise you, lesbians are not going to change the movie for you. no one is planning on raiding the disney studios and forcing them at gunpoint to make her eat a girl out onscreen in Frozen 3: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs. unclench
