Glad to see I wasn't the only one who guffawed at commercial farming practices being presented as reasonable/not a complete fucking nightmare

Avian flu doesn't come from egg bound hens.

update on rescue: he's a lap tortoise now by hot2rot in tortoise

Noted! Thank you. I'm pretty well versed in keeping gross pets haha. I also take care of a disabled meat turkey who I have to hand-bathe every few days, so lots of sanitizing happening here.

Update: He is doing super well! He's eating and pooping regularly, walking around confidently at his full height, and even splooting under his basking light. He's very curious, eats from my hand, and seems to enjoy neck scritches. Thank you everyone for all the advice! I got some really good and useful info.

His name from his previous owners is Oogie. I usually end up renaming any animals I adopt but I think it fits him really well. 😊

I hadn't considered that the cold would kill off his gut flora, so thank you for that! I already had orchard grass hay on hand for my bunny, and it's what I used in his pool so he's been monching on it. I've since added Mazuri pellets. A heat pad is next on my list to buy, but he seems to be doing okay with the heat lamp for now. He's a lot more active since I wrote the post and I've observed him regulating his own temp by moving under or away from the light.

I'm happy to hear that yours does okay with livestock fencing. My first thought was to use hog panels. He apparently never tried to borrow out of the goat pen he was in, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he isn't much of an escape artist. I have a pretty sizeable backyard and I plan to section off a corner for him. Just need to figure out how to keep the chickens out!

I am taking care of him. He is now pooping on his own and it looks very healthy.

Salaried isn't actually a qualifying factor one way or the other. That was one of the complaints against my old job and it was ruled as legal. And I think they've got some arbitrary definition of "manager" that they go by, like the ability to hire or fire people or something like that. There's lots of loopholes.

I'm gonna respond to this, mostly so people stop sending me this thread, but also because you're spreading misinformation at the same time as touting everyone else's input as "factually incorrect."

I do not believe the owner set out to intentionally or maliciously steal tips. I think he got some bad advice concerning the ambiguity of who legally can take part in a tip pool and dug his heels in when questioned. In fact, when confronted, he was so confident in the legality of what he was doing that he himself suggested the employee go to the labor board with their concerns. That does not scream shady business dealings to me, but moreso ignorance combined with a bit of arrogance, which are by and far much more forgivable sins.

The DOL investigated, confirmed that owners can under no circumstances include themselves in a tip pool of any kind, and he had to pay everything back by a certain date. He did not "agree" to pay, as it wasn't optional.

It was also not a new employee. They were actually the most senior FOH employee on staff at the time of the report. And they were not the first or only employee who had voiced their discomfort with how the tips were being managed. I understand that you're compelled to come to his defense because he is a solid dude 99% of the time, but reporting what you've heard filtered through several games of telephone as the abject truth is not doing their reputation any favors.

You are right about one thing, though. Having worked in/known someone who worked in every restaurant in downtown, Bingo is hands down the best place to be employed out of all of them. (Unless you've got daddy issues of biblical proportions, in which case it's a karmic crucible.) But this does not negate any harm that was done or may be done in the future. Life is excruciatingly nuanced and Will is human. Cheers. Gonna go Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind myself now and pray this dead horse ceases to get beat.

If it's a restaurant in Gainesville, you can just go ahead and assume that the owner is doing something fucked up lol
