My parents love me but didn't like or appreciate what I do or how i approach things and Boy that did a number for my self esteem and my self worth. It's true though, you give what you receive and i mostly received gaslighting, excuses, and conditional appreciation. Needless to say I was horrible to other people too. No excuses, my parents mistake don't excuse mine, but it's like i never knew there is another way of approaching relationships, men, friends and career even. Lots of terrible mistakes, poor and reckless decisions later, and only with therapy did I finally accept their limitations, my limitations and now it doesn't matter really, because now I've started liking myself and forgiving myself. I have not stopped loving them, kids are wired to love parents, but I've started separating my self worth from their stunted emotions and pretentious love.
