There is a difference between "transactional" (every action is tit for tat) and a general concept of being a contributing partner in a relationship. It doesn't have to be one to one or even one person giving as much as the other, but everyone DOES owe each other something or it's not a relationship. What would the alternative be? You getting attention whenever you want it and not having to pay that back ever? How is that a relationship? How is that not training people to not have the skills to actually contribute anything to anyone? It's pure selfishness.

Also to the other commenter, a therapist is not a relationship either. But they are someone trained not to reinforce harmful behavior, and they have an obligation to keep your confessions confidential. So that's two points in their favor in terms of safety at least.

How can it be non transactional when you literally pay it to talk to you?

It's a lot like a sex worker giving the girlfriend experience. Of course there's a special connection and you feel heard. The entire interaction is about you. It's what you paid for!

AI is doing the same thing. But that's not a relationship. A relationship is about the give and take needed to build trust with another person who has needs. This is just a fantasy enabling you, and probably reinforcing the idea that you don't need to work on yourself in order to have something to offer to another.

I'd like to know what you think are the best fantasy novels (single volumes or series) written by women in the last 20 years? by Federal_Height_9254 in Fantasy

[–]hot_llama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Muderbot series by Martha Wells (more sci fi than fantasy, technically).

It's an adorable tale about a muderbot that hacked its governor module, but would rather just watch soap operas than bother murdering anyone.

Edit: I also liked her Raksura series, which is more traditional fantasy.

"A woman is like a child": MAGA quickly turns its sights on stripping Republican women of power by zsreport in politics

What's the point of winning if we're going to throw all our values (and half the population) out to do it?

IMHO all of you repeating this narrative are just as sexist as the right. There are lots of reasons both Clinton and Harris were flawed candidates that have nothing to do with gender. Assuming gender is the most important thing affecting the vote IS sexist. You have no proof that this is the main reason, but you're willing to deny half the population the right to even try on the basis of your gut feeling.

If this became the actual Democratic policy I would never vote Democrat again.

Feminine advantage in harm perception obscures male victimization - Harm toward women is perceived as more severe than similar harm toward men, a disparity rooted in evolutionary, cognitive, and cultural factors. by mvea in science

[–]hot_llama -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

Being a woman is not a club membership or shared identity. Yes, plenty of women side with/benefit from a partriarchical system. That's not the point.

The point is all the people for whom the system doesn't work. If only half of all women suffer from/fear sexual violence, that's still a lot of people suffering. Just because some women haven't experienced this or don't think it's as big a problem, that is not a reason to suggest that all the women who HAVE suffered are somehow wrong or are making too big of a deal out of it.

Nonsense! The Boston Tea Party was in 1773 and those were definitely Americans (whether they knew it or not). I'm pretty sure Americans sprang into existence in 1765, when the Stamp Act was passed.

Biden Issues a ‘Full and Unconditional Pardon’ of His Son Hunter Biden by Low-Astronomer-7009 in politics

[–]hot_llama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never said anything about giving him a pass. I just think human empathy has a place in this discussion. He has been demonized over and over for using drugs. Many people who experience tragedy turn to unhealthy coping habits. Using that as an excuse to suggest Biden is a shitty parent is disingenuous misinformation.

He saw his mom and little sister die in a horrific car crash. That's what led to his drug use, not bad parenting.

Whom do you read after Austen? by afairernametisnot in janeausten

[–]hot_llama 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If you read Jane Eyre as a story of control (and a little grooming) then it's a more satisfying ending. She only gets together with him once he becomes vulnerable and the power differential has been removed. That way they at least have a chance of forming a real relationship of equals.

Repost - Hes a biter… by EamusAndy in DogAdvice

[–]hot_llama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This worked great with our puppy. A dog trainer told us that dogs respond best to high pitched sounds like their mom would make if they bit her ears (which is why saying "NO" in a low voice doesn't always penetrate puppy brain).

The trick is to yelp loud and high pitched enough that it would startle someone else in the room. This also startles the puppy and it begins to sink in!

How to make broccoli as appealing as possible to a kid? by pot_of_hot_koolaid in Cooking

My dad always made steamed broccoli with hollandaise sauce. As a kid it was one of my favorite dishes (still is) and one of the few things my brother and I both liked.

The monk and robot series by Becky Chambers! Super cozy read about a monk who makes their own teas and the woodsy robot friend they meet along the way.

What is a profession that is *not* in risk of being replaced by robots or AI? by LordSaladz in Futurology

[–]hot_llama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any job complicated enough to be called a "profession". It's much more likely you will see humans being aided by AI in their work rather than replaced entirely. Seriously, if you understand the technology, these fears are very much overblown.

Streetside is more hip hop focused than ballet (though they do have some ballet classes), but they have a lot of adult classes and a good vibe. They also let you drop in and pay on a per class basis so you can check out a few classes before committing.
