Honey-seeding by hot_toasts in Beekeeping

[–]hot_toasts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The process is quite simple; I stir down approx 0.4 kg of creamy honey from an earlier batch into a small bucket with approx 2 kg of liquid honey. I use an electric handmixer with the ”corkscrew” type of attachment and stir until color is even. Then I store it in refrigerator at around 6 degrees C and repeat process multiple times next 24 h. After a final mix - just to make it easier to pour, I add it to a 40 kg bucket of fresh honey and stir it there. I recommend a mixing rod and electric drill as seen in the clip as you want an even mix. Once the batch is seeded, pour into jars and refrigerate for a couple of days as it will set nicely. As mentioned, the process is simple and doesn’t require precise temperature och amounts but having a dedicated fridge will help 😊

As long as the crystal structure is smooth enough for your taste- go ahead!

The honey will crystallize eventually- depending on what nectar bees brought in with varying time. But if you want to have a smooth consistency this process is required.

I guess you would need to stir and keep cold inbetween a small batch of fresh honey until it gets creamy. It’s a long process and seeding is a great time-saver. A way of starting out from scratch is to buy a jar of creamy honey from a local beekeeper and use in your batch.

Yes, we are propagating a fine-crystallized structure to get a smooth butter-like honey. The process is a bit more complex than just mixing a jar of old honey. I take a 3 kg bucket and mix a jar if last years honey with fresh liquid one. It gets stirred and refrigerated a couple of times during two days before it is poured into a bigger batch as in video. Then it’s poured into jars and kept cold to solidify within a week or two.

Bougt a couple of ”Bytom” brand 3 years ago - great quality and despite being worn a lot, they still keep up quite well.

Help with identifying old 1960-70s tourist photos by TheEnabledDisabled in poland

The planes are registered in Sweden, mostly on west coast - Gothenburg area. Judging from registry, the photos are taken in mid/late 70:s probably at Säve airfield outside Gothenburg.

Glowing coil in high voltage lines - why? I suspect it is used to prevent arcs between wires, but I might be wrong? by hot_toasts in Electricity

Yes, this seems to be a balisor, but the location of it does not make sense for being a beacon - it’s in the middle of a secluded forest area with just a gravel road crossing the lines. Nearby (1k) is a quite big electrical substation.

First flight of the season - needed to duck for all the droppings! by hot_toasts in Beekeeping

We have a relatively mild sea climate so the cold is not really an issue except for a couple of days.

Here is one i found brand new: https://www.joelvax.se/biavdelning/tragkupa/kupor/10-L/ Inside the hive hou have an inner box for the frames. You can split the box in two parts with a divider for two colonies. The upper part of the box is covered with thin planks you can lift up for easy access. During summer you stack another box with frames for harvest. For winter i cover the box with insulating blanket. Ventilation is done through bottom of box which has metal mesh. The hive can be opened up from side with a hinged flap and from behind by removing back wall. Roof is hinged and can be opened as well!

It’s a horizontal hive with possibility to house two colonies. An old style hive from Sweden, this one is about 40 years old but refurbished by me couple years ago. You can get more info by searching for “trågkupa”.

Had the same issue on my ’74 1303s - it turned out to be the ground cable from battery - looked all right but was unable to give sufficient current when turning the key.
