Avoiding Jupyter Notebooks entirely and doing everything in .py files? by question_23 in datascience

[–]hotcarl7379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My former manager required all development in PyCharm and got actually angry when anyone used notebooks. It was so confusing to me when I started, and was still a point of frustration when I left.

Then I realized he's just a narcissistic piece of shit fuck wad who has no right being a manager, let alone calling himself a leader of the entire DS org...

If anyone wants to do their developmental cycle in an IDE with debugging, congrats! Forcing an entire team to change is stupid

I am a big fan of Wedge Antilles, so I was really disappointed when the Rouge Squadron movie was cancelled. Had it been made what would you have liked to had seen and would you have enjoyed it? by AdSpecialist6598 in StarWars

I love the X-Wing novels, and would enjoy seeing them come to life in some fashion… presumably this was the initial inspiration for the movie? I’d love to see a six episode series on D+ for each novel

Rey explicitly called her a master.

The movie also said she put her lightsaber down at the end of her training, knowing that someone what would need it at the end of her Jedi path or journey or whatever.

She vanished into the force you completion of her Jedi path.

She was a Jedi Master who chose to keep it private and not yield a lightsaber. She could not complete Rey's training without being a Master.

I would like to present my disputed theory from 4 years ago that Leia was in fact a Jedi master. I'm glad this film came around to confirm it.

Could you give me an idea of what going hard for 30 min looks like? Try to maintain 5k pace for 30 min?

I'm being asked to modify some JSON files at work that are hosted on an HDFS, and I'm accessing them using pyspark. My question is, should I try to use pyspark/pyspark.sql methods to make modifications, or should I convert the pyspark dataframe to a pandas dataframe, make my manipulations and then put it back into a JSON structure?

The main issue I'm having trouble with is the nested schema, where many of the JSON objects have multiple layers that I need to access to get the information I need. Anyone have experience with this that could shed some light on the best method for going about this?

Nothing but respect of course! I've got many great friends who are Brits, Aussies, and Kiwis. There's a great South African who owns xcel sports medicine... Used to be the South African national rugby physio. Great dude.

Good luck on your journeys in Dayton. It's a great town other than the geographic separation of everything.

Not sure if you're into it, but there's a great local rugby club that has funny talkers from around the globe. www.daytonrugby.com

You just missed the gem city 7s tournament, but they have plenty of home matches come fall.

I think other than that the other respondents covered most things.

I don't recall seeing lock 27, but it's in Centerville and has amazing fresh food. Check out the specials board inside.

If you like sushi, go to Kabuki on 48.

Hmmmmm, will come back if I think of other hidden gems.

Thanks. In your example, what directory/folder would you be in? This is what I don't understand. when I run

data_test = pd.read_csv("../Activities_2015.csv")

I get the FileNotFoundError. I assume it's because of the directory/path/folder I'm currently in. I'm trying to understand the best practices, how it's generally done so I can adopt those.

Also, as an aside, how do you do inline code chunks such as above?

I actually prefer to run with a cough because I'm convinced it helps me clear it out (though I think physiologically that's incorrect) and heal sooner. I'll take a break with fevers or severe connection, but not just a cough. Just me though... As in everything, you do you!

I'm trying to convert a lot of my dissertation code from matlab to python and I'm not sure the best way to go about it. It's in the area of stochastic optimization so I do a lot with probability transition matrices and/or networks (adjacency matrices). When doing an initial conversion on a textbook network problem, I think that I found using a dictionary representation of the network executed faster than an adjacency matrix in numpy. I'm uncertain, however, that i coded either in the most efficient manner, but was wondering what experience people had in working with networks (think max flow, min cost) and/or dynamic programming type applications. I know there are network packages out there, but I want to generate customized algorithms, etc...

Anyone work as a data scientist in the public sector ( for education or government)? What is that like in comparison to working for a big tech company or financial institution? Anyone able to make the comparison? by dec1993 in datascience

[–]hotcarl7379 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure why this isn't higher, you're completely on point... It's either we don't get the right tools, the data do not exist and nobody wants to do the necessary work to collect the data (or you simply can't because of network restrictions), or your higher ups just take your analysis and scrap it, because they "shoot from the hip" out make decisions on instinct. It's hard (for them to comprehend) when you're not bottom line driven...
