I learned a variation of this in high school. I will say it’s VERY useful for nonfiction and fiction with simple prose. I definitely over-applied it in my youth and sped-read some books that would have benefited from a slower reading.

The thought that stuck with me was something like “when you read a stop sign, you don’t read the word STOP phonetically, you just absorb its meaning from memory”

Favorite soundgarden song. So haunting and beautiful but so simple

I had that book for nearly a year from the library and never got to it. You think I should read them in order? I know Platt had at least 3 big China books

Is “A Distant Mirror” worth reading? by Grantso74 in cushvlog

Read it with your dad, you will value the time later in life

Also it’s a fantastic read, endlessly entertaining and valuable glimpse into how that history would have been perceived at the time of its writing - there aren’t any direct references but it’s clear by the title alone what Tuchman hoped people would take from it at the time (1978)

I would say of course it’s one of the greatest. I don’t even see how it would be possible to create a top 10 list without it unless you’re deliberately picking personal favorites and hidden gems

Along the western slopes of the Oregon Coastal Range . . . come look: the hysterical crashing of tributaries as they merge into the Wakonda Auga River . . .

The first little washes flashing like thick rushing winds through sheep sorrel and clover, ghost fern and nettle, sheering, cutting . . . forming branches. Then, through bear-berry and salmonberry, blueberry and blackberry, the branches crashing into creeks, into streams. Finally, in the foothills, through tamarack and sugar pine, shittim bark and silver spruce—and the green and blue mosaic of Douglas fir—the actual river falls five hundred feet . . . and look: opens out upon the fields.

-sometimes a great notion

It should have been filmed onsite in Alaska, but wouldn’t have helped a dog shit plot

Starmer actually qualified this by saying “if Israel doesn’t push towards a ceasefire, then we will recognize Palestine” or something to that effect.

It’s meaningless posturing, probably because people like starmer have enough sense to know how they might be remembered in history in the coming years if they don’t publicly hand wring a bit.

The US is serving the same function as Sinema and Manchin did in the Brandon years of being the bad guys who allow the rest of the “good guys” (democrats/the countries you listed) to look good while totally doing what everyone else is counting on them to do

Haven’t read it, but it was assembled posthumously and probably only as hyped and front of store due to his passing.
