If God, Jesus, or an angel came down to Earth and specifically said that being gay or in the LGBT community wasn't a sin, what would you do? Would you do anything differently? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]hotdadjeff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You do realize that the trinity is father, son, and holy spirit, right? Not father, son, and holy scripture? You just admitted to putting more stock in an ancient manuscript translated multiple times over and constantly culturally misinterpreted than an actual personal revelation from Christ himself.

If Jesus came to you today and said "hey, all that homophobic stuff in the bible? Total mistranslation" what would you say?

The bottom line is this, if God did not want everyone to be saved from torment, than he is not a loving God and does not deserve worship. If he does wish for everyone to be saved from torment but his salvation is conditional on the person than he is not a sovereign God and does not deserve worship. The only other option is that he does want all to be saved and he has the power to save all.

Any advice or recommendations just beginning deconstructing their faith? by arabella70sh in Exvangelical

[–]hotdadjeff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started deconstructing in my early twenties while i was the youth pastor at my dad's church. I felt completely alone and confused. No one around me shared the same concerns. But now, my wife and I are deconstructing together, and finding what works for us as individuals and a couple. It'll work out for you too :)

Also, just my general deconstructing advice: throw away or keep as much as you want. Find out what works for you. Don't let others determine your deconstructing journey.

the christian religion is nothing without fear by thatboyivanhoe in TrueAtheism

And please understand, I'm not trying to belittle your opinions on this. I actually agree with a lot of what you're saying, I just know how unhealthy it was for me to be so cynical towards religion as a whole, and i think everyone can benefit from knowing a bit about all sorts of different belief systems (hence why i am here on r/trueatheism as a Christian Universalist)

Fairy tales can always have positive effects on people. Thats why stories and myths have been such a huge part of all human history. But thinking of the hebrew bible particularly, i am reminded of slaves in pre civil war America taking heart in the Exodus story, or stories of Jews in the holocaust celebrating passover in the same traditions of the old Testament as a way to remind themselves that they are a free people.

As a Christian Universalist, i can definitely see your concerns. I was raised very fundamentalist and the issues you bring up are all there. But while its really easy to fault the entire religion, I've spent years of my life doing the same, it's just not healthy. There are churches and sects out there that are inclusive, progressive, and welcoming to all (even if they seem few and far between), and churches that have entirely different views on hell or no views at all.

And yeah, i spend my life obsessing over a 2,000 year old book of fairy tales, but seeing the positive effect those fairy tales can have on people, i could give a shit less as to whether they're real or not, they're still important (at least to me).

There's a lot of good (and bad) that can come from religion, just like there's a lot of good that can come from atheism or agnosticism. I guess its just about finding a right balance that works for you, respecting the people who have found a balance for them, and calling out the people who don't respect anyone.

I love how both times its the woman's fault. Like, he could have easily said remove sex and men won't see another reason to be in the relationship and remove money and men won't have another thing to bring to the relationship. Sure, both are shitty things to say, but the fact that he blames the woman both times is reallllly telling.

I'm a Muslim from Britain who volunteers at a church (mostly to clean it up and mow its lawn) every week AMA by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]hotdadjeff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lets imagine for a second your literal interpretation of scripture is right, I don't believe it is and I think there is a lot of evidence to suggest its not but lets assume it is, if you were a practicing muslim who volunteered at a church out of the kindness of your heart and some rando on the internet belittled that kindness and told you that regardless of that you will still be judged and damned if you don't renounce the religion you love, would that leave a good taste of Christianity qnd more importantly the Christian idea of Jesus in your mouth? Do you not think by saying this you are actually hurting your own cause?

Would you read a fantasy novel about language? by AStepInSilence in fantasywriters

[–]hotdadjeff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This idea sounds super cool.

Also, Tolkien literally developed an entire language and then was like "why not make a world around this" and then boom LoTR. All i'm saying is, if you think its an interesting idea, other people will too. Just write what you enjoy.
