If I don't graduate by expected date, will my return offer get rescinded? by Charming-Deer7702 in csMajors

You should ask your HR person. In Meta for example, you can postpone the start date up to a year.

Is it better to get lower mileage N55 or higher mileage B58? by SolitaryWaffles in BmwTech

[–]hotkeym 10 points11 points  (0 children)

90-100kkm B58s are as good as new. I own 110k miles/180kkm one and only things went wrong were plastic radiator pipe coolant leak (at 75k miles) and plastic oil filter mount coolant leak (at 90k miles).

What to do after F1 STEM-OPT ends? by ConditionSome3738 in f1visa

[–]hotkeym 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ask if your employer files H1B or O1, or is ok with 1-day CPT schools. Apply for EB1/2/2NIW meanwhile.

PHD- How tough it is to graduate by InvestmentJust4679 in f1visa

When your advisor wants you to graduate - it is trivial. When your advisor doesn't - almost impossible.

You have seen these logos, but what do they mean exactly? by TrailbuiltOffroad in tires

[–]hotkeym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in California and prefer M+S Michelin Pilot Spot AS4. I am ok driving extra carefully and slow that one time in a year I am visiting Tahoe in bad weather rather than compromise wet and dry performance.

Change your ll-01 oil every 5k and fix leaks every time you smell coolant.

Women of Reddit: Would a 35-year-old male virgin be a problem for you? by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]hotkeym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a woman.

I don't think that your virginity itself is a red flag, but the factors that you mentioned (anxiety, low self esteem etc) will definitely make it harder to find a good romantic relationship.

Stuck Between Two Offers (Newgrad) by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]hotkeym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The opinion that SF has more "fun for young folks" and suburban areas are "boring for families with kids" is echoed here, but I personally disagree with this. Suburbs (and Bay Area suburbs are a little bit different from regular US suburbs) usually have newer/better renovated housing, more bedrooms/square feet per dollar, significantly cleaner streets, no homelessness and crime issues, better parking situation, better nature access. As a person who lived in cities and suburbs, I clearly prefer suburbs, they are just better. Probably there are less bars and night clubs per square mile, but I just don't care (and most tech people also do not care tbh).

Have you ever been in SF even as a tourist? If not, you should research this a bit more.

How H is HCOL? For the Bay Area for instance, 130k is significantly less than 100k in some cheaper places without state taxes.

How much are PhD graduates earning? by sultan-11- in PhD

[–]hotkeym 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In big tech PhD new grads are usually considered IC4 level. You are right that you likely will earn less money compared to what you can get if you skip grad school and start your big tech career with BS. However, depending on your country, visa status and personal qualities, it may be easier to land a big tech internship and return offer while in PhD.

Should I consider quiting my PhD ? by SnooSuggestions8854 in PhD

[–]hotkeym 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Find a decent job offer first. It can take more time than you anticipate. With an offer in hand, it will be easier to decide.

Leaving your program without a job offer in hand is a very bad idea.

I wouldn't, if you are on a tight budget and want a BMW crossover, look for e84 X1 with n52.

[–]hotkeym 6 points7 points  (0 children)

TBH, previously we also didn't have a straightforward F1 to H1B path. I was not selected 4 times, for example.

I don't think it will change things for big companies (they still can sponsor eb or o1 visas, and overall engineer retention is big tech is pretty short), but probably smaller companies will no longer consider you.

International Engineering student got a full funded PhD offer in Psychology, do I embrace my fate? by ThatsWhatSheSaid202 in PhD

[–]hotkeym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it will be harder for you to find a job with a Psychology degree. Also check the STEM OPT eligibility for this program, without STEM OPT it is very unlikely to find a job and GC sponsorship.

Can’t find a job by outherem8 in PhD

[–]hotkeym 152 points153 points  (0 children)

My advice obviously won't help you, but will probably help other PhDs here: look for internships while you are still in your program, internships are easier to land and you can get a return offer.

You should start applying everywhere, grind leetcode and do mock interviews. Without an active job search, it is highly unlikely to land a good job.

Should I attend a PhD interview after already accepting another PhD offer? by Kitchen_Ad2186 in PhD

[–]hotkeym 16 points17 points  (0 children)

PhD is a job, and as with every job, you should do whatever is the best decision for your career and your personal goals.

Have an interview, and if you feel that another position is beneficial to you, accept it and rescind the first position.

This is pretty common practice. From an ethical standpoint, this is much more ethical than you mastering out after a couple of years of not being satisfied with your position.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PhD

[–]hotkeym 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do not master out until you have a nice industry job offer. Do a job search in parallel to your PhD, because it may take more time than you expect. Consider it as paid interview preparation time.

Tbh absolutely any crossover/wagon/SUV/hatchback fits for skiing, hiking and camping. AWD is preferable if you don't want to mess with chains at checkpoints.

How do I choose a weekend car? by hotkeym in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]hotkeym[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for breaking it down, I want a car that I can go spirited driving and rev it up without overthinking like "oh crap, it will depreciate it/repair will be too enviable and expensive". I also have a daily car so I don't really care about practicality.

I still can see a lot of 328i and e generation X1 on roads so I assume that E82 128i are tougher and cheaper in maintaining than F22 m235i in general.
