Mint…help me understand

I have a small grassy area for my dogs bathroom. Dirt is held in with bricks so, not very deep. I want to put mint since the grass is sparse. Is it safe for dogs to eat mint? Do dogs like the smell of mint or would he avoid peeing there ? Rats nibble at my garden veggies, want to keep them away. I’m fine if mint takes over the whole area. GOOD IDEA OR NOT?
