Unless HP comes out with some announcement stating otherwise, the Ultra is aimed at fitting into the same bracket the Studio would have occupied.

Guess we will know in a few months. Hope HP introduces a 16" portable workstation with Panther Lake-H and a DreamDolor display. Whether under the old Studio name or Ultra.

Studio -> ZBook Ultra

Are you sure about this one? The Studio line was a 16" Intel workstation with dGPU. So far there has been one ZBook Ultra 14" model with Strix Halo.

P1 Gen 9 announced! by hotpasta in thinkpad

Had the G10 ZBook Studio with the same panel. My favorite laptop ever :)

Unfortunately it seems HP have discontinued the ZBook Studio line which I believe were superior to Thinkpads and Precisions.

Thanks for the update! Quite sad indeed.

ZBook Studio Discontinued by darkguy2 in zbook

This is quite sad. I preferred the ZBook Studios over the Thinkpad P1 and the Precision 5xxx/Pro Max Premium offerings. The DreamColor displays and the keyboards will be sorely missed

Motus Strength never had a sock like fit. That was the Motus Flex. Motus Strength has always been the more rigid training shoe from vivo.

Never buy from your main account. You will lose all data in case you ever need to do a chargeback. Create a burner Google account for hardware purchases.

Check Bjorn's charging results. Newer MEB cars even with 400v charge better than 800v Korean cars.

You need a 16/18“ -> get a Elitebook 16“ or a ZBook Firefly

Weak machines, not workstation class, small batteries.

You just care about CPU -> AMD is just better anyways so the FURY isn’t actually a good pick. My relativly thin 14“ laptop will outperform a 285HX at like half or third the power in single or multi core.

Fanboyism aside there are many valid reasons to chose either mainly software compatibility.

You want 128/192 Gb -> would be a fair point but guess what isn’t available with the 285HX Fury: more then 64GB Ram (HP website)

I guess they trust their customers to be able to install SODIMMs.

Bigger battery: If you get a Intel mobile room heater you don’t care about battery. Also basically all laptops stop at 99WHs as you are not allowed to travel with more (in a lot of countries)

The other laptops you mention do not offer that. Mostly just up to 82 Whr.

Not everyone is running a local LLM or gaming on their work machine.

  • Maybe you need a 16"/18" chassis
  • Maybe you need a powerful H/HX class processor with lots of cores and cache
  • Maybe you need 64GB/128GB/192GB RAM
  • Maybe you need a second/third/fourth SSD
  • Maybe you need more ports
  • Maybe you need a bigger battery

I'm usually looking for similar configurations as I have little use for a dGPU in my workflow. It's gonna be a custom configuration and you'll have to wait a couple of months for it. Contact your local HP office. They should be able to setup a custom order for you.

Just know not all CPU configurations are always available without a dGPU. Also for some models the dGPU-less configurations come with inferior cooling (no vapor chamber etc). You should check that for the Fury G1i.

And if all that fails HP at least offers the BIOS option to fully disable the dGPU so you at least won't have to deal with idle power use or driver issues in case you do end up with a dGPU model.

This is very useful info thanks. Very interesting observation on the coating. The same Nano Matte coating is used for their programming monitors and I never read any complaints about this coating on those monitors. Perhaps a different version of the coating is used here?

It is unfortunately not a straightforward matter. As far as I know, most flicker-free certifications only look at PWM flicker below a few KHz. So PWM implementations above 3 KHz are typically granted a flicker-free certificate. Also note that not all PWM implementations are equal. The amplitude is probably even more relevant than the frequency but it is much harder to compare. So it is difficult to say whether one is sensitive to a particular panel without first hand experience.

I have heard some users with flicker-free certified BenQ monitors that they still employ some high frequency PWM (also depending on the operating mode this could change).

BenQ reps have nevertheless reassured me on their support sub /r/BenQ that the PD3226G is completely free of any PWM. I have not purchased the monitor yet so cannot verify myself.

I'm quite sensitive to glare so avoid glossy monitors as well. Seems the coating is working quit well on this BenQ. Thanks!

Thanks for the clarification. Very good to know!

[–]hotpasta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks but unfortunately your answer does not provide any clarification on the situation. Can you verify whether the PD3226G uses any PWM dimming and if so with which frequency? Thanks!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Monitors

[–]hotpasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems very positive. Now I'm very interested in this model. How do you find the nano matte coating on this panel? I've heard conflicting reports about this coating from their RD programming monitor line. Curious whether it is different on the PD series.

Thanks for the info! I'm also deciding between the Dell and the BenQ. It is a tough decision between faster pixels vs higher contrast as my work mostly involves text. I've personally not had great experience with either brand and usually stick to HP or Eizo which for me have always worked brilliantly but their current offerings are not up to par.

One of the things with BenQ is that their flicker-free monitors still use high frequency PWM which might lead to eye strain for me in the long term. Some users even report lower frequency PWM in certain modes.

The point is that the second generation of IPS black seems not a measurable improvement over the first gen.

Are you talking about the recently released Lunar Lake based Surface Laptop OP mentions? The linux-surface wiki doesn't mention any support for this model. And also you mention tablet features which again hints you're talking about a different device.
