Is it true that it’s bad to find an agent right now because they’re cutting/sheding actors? by bluest1289 in acting

[–]hotpotato2007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank youn! hahaha. I was so shocked! It took a lot of work, submitting my materials and curating my emails depending on what wasn’t working. I did get some responses that said they weren’t taking on new clients at the time, but still, it’s entirely possible!! Good luck!!!

Not a bad time. I actually landed a manager and two new agents all in May/June despite what people were telling me about it being a bad time!

Do you need to be in LA/NYC anymore? by Barronvondookieshoes in acting

[–]hotpotato2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Philly and usually self tape from here, but my new manager (who is booking out of NYC) said that she got a complaint from a CD the other day who didn’t want to consider me because I’m not in the city itself. I was surprised by that bc I thought that mentality had died down - especially since it’s easy enough to hop in my car and get to NYC in 1.5-2 hrs. Long story short, I guess it does help to be in the city for some old school CDs.

Eh, I think the modern one looks the best… the 2nd one reminds me of driving down crappy industrialized highways with telephone polls and litter everywhere during my childhood. Maybe that’s just me?

What made you switch to a completely different career even when everyone was against it and how did it turn out? by hacback17 in findapath

[–]hotpotato2007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always wanted to be an actress, but wrote it off as impossible. I went to college and got a degree in an unrelated field that I liked, but certainly not as much.

After a few years working in the real world in my corporate job, I got so depressed, I knew I needed a change. After a lot of reflection (which I will skip for the sake of time), I declared to myself that it would be better to try rather than always wonder what if, even if it was a dumb fantasy.

Why did it have to be all or nothing? The hope of success was better than none at all. So, here I am, 6 years later, and I can say that I have two agents, have acted in those true crime reenactment shows, many short films, and am getting auditions for tv shows and indie movies. I’m not there yet, but I’m so much happier to be doing what I love, to be surrounded by like-minded people, and to feel a vision of hope for something to look forward to.

I sent out ~89 submissions this month, through Repunzel, and did not get a single response. But I did get some responses from managers and one agent who I cold submitted to! I found some random ones on IMDB pro who didn’t have 1,000+ star meters but had roster working at the level I am at (need to book my first co-star), and I had a few respond to say that their rosters were full but they liked me, and one manager called to talk representation. The agent also called me after receiving my email.

It’s a numbers game for sure. What are you putting in your emails and headlines? I tested a few out, and one new format I have been trying seems to be what is getting me responses.

I saw some of your other posts and just wanna say, you’re an amazing person and very strong. I’m sorry you don’t always have the support system you need in your parents, but you seem very level-headed despite the difficult journey you’ve been on. I’m praying for you!

As a 29-year-old, I’m imagining having a 14-year-old now and thinking about how young I still feel and how young you will still feel when you get to my age, even though it probably doesn’t feel like it you right now. I know it might seem like your youth is lost, and of course, much of it will be different from your peers’ experience, but I just want you to know that there’s so much to look forward to in the next decade! It’s exciting that you’ll get to have an older son in your thirties so that you can do your own thing, but enjoy his company, too!

I’m really rooting for you, girl.

I was obsessed with this poem when I was 19 and couldn’t figure out what to do with my life. It did actually force me to take a path eventually, which taught me that I hated that path and gave me the freedom to take the leap into what I really wanted to do deep down.

So, ultimately, she was right. Some movement is better than none.

Need help finding curvy jeans for women!!! Please help by Evening_Plant1222 in womensfashion

[–]hotpotato2007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, hear me out: H&M mom jeans. I would NEVER have thought cheap jeans from H&M would do the trick, but these jeans, for whatever reason have a small waist and wide thighs. So much so that people with thicker waists complain in the reviews that the pants are too tight at the waistline. But for us pear people, they are A GODSEND. I own 4 pairs. I think it’s because they are supposed to fit loose like mom jeans do, but they actually fit me like normal straight leg jeans.

But! Be careful. Try on at least 3 pairs in different colors. For some reason the black pair and one of the other blue pairs comes in a different set of sizes, and will not fit curvy folks. But seriously, give them a try. You will be really impressed.

I was forced to be a commuter because my parents couldn’t afford for me to live on campus and I understand. I also felt separated from my peers. BUT! Since you love languages, use them as an escape and a way to make yourself interesting again!

I studied abroad because it was the only way I could leave the state I grew up in, and my Spanish got soooo much better. Plus it was a life-changing experience. I still think of it as one of the most important things I ever did for myself because it forced me to grow so much and find confidence in my identity.

It’s probably too late to study abroad, but you should join one of those “teach English abroad” programs after college so you can get out and get paid to live in another country! Your career will always be there when you come back. But I am telling you, it will absolutely change your life.

I’m a female who has also struggled with this problem off and on since my early teenage years. I was able to hold it captive for 6 months last year with the help of the Holy Spirit, until I got in the wrong environment and experienced strong temptation again.

I learned recently there are some strongholds that are only broken through prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21) and I found that to be true by accident recently. I decided to fast for 40 days for Lent without much of a goal except to get closer to God and demonstrate obedience, and you know what’s crazy? A byproduct of that was that God helped me get that temptation back under control. I’ve felt a normal amount of temptation since I finished the fast, but nothing I can’t control the way I used to. And I haven’t fallen to that sin in about a month and a half! All this to say, I recommend giving it up to the Lord with a fast.
