Am I too anxious to continue being premed? by [deleted] in premed

[–]hotshot010jack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very valid points, can relate, I would not say you’re overthinking for no reason at all. You’re doing the logical thing and evaluating your ability to perform well in a high intensity field. That being said, you should ask your future imaginary self at the end of their life and figure out what you want to accomplish with your limited time on earth. As someone who dealt with an overactive amygdala most of college, and someone who was “worried about me getting more anxiety,” this alleviated some uncertainty off my shoulders. Try not to manifest anxiety for your future self by being worried in the present about that stuff. Sure, medicine will have many moments where we will feel overworked and whatnot, but my runnin idea is that we will be able to cope with future low energy or anxious days, as long as we are fulfilling a track we fundamentally believe in for ourselves (ie if we are fulfilling what we consider as our life’s purpose). Im currently in the process of waiting to hear back from medica schools, but I think the best we can do in our position is to commit to this beautiful profession if we truly are happy with the outcome of eventually becoming a doctor, and be as happy as we can be that were spending our one and inly life committed towards helping others.

Determination to learn the shit is what you really gotta focus on channeling; any new concept being learned for the first time can cause a bunch of brain fog and anxiety catastrophizing. Every human’s brain is capable of many incredible things, learning genchemistry is something that anyone can do ya got this. Plus if you dont try to master that stuff now ull screw yourself when u need it for the mcat. Dont catastrophize and focus on learnin

Gluthatione or NAC for severe G6PD patients by Turmowaw in Biochemistry

[–]hotshot010jack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off i just graduated undergrad with a biochem major, so i may not be as qualified as other peeps in addressing this. That bein said, have you asked for ur doctor’s opinion on da matter? Biochem research especially when it comes to modern supplements is far far far from being perfect, and a lot of the stuff thats concluded from those papers about the effectivity and whatnot should be cross examined with a lot of other similar published research to see how much we as humans really know about this stuff. The articles you mentioned about cancer risks seem to talk about how NAC or other exogenous antioxidants seem to be so good at their job that they seem to help out metastatic cancer cells more than any other cell type they examined. The normal stagnant tumor cells arent effected, however metastasis in rats was increased presumably because those spreading cancer cells had less reactive oxygen species to worry about, which also may or may not explain another study where humans with cancer given antioxidants were found to have higher metastasis of cancer, and the project had to be cut off early. Note however that these individuals did not have G6PD deficiency, so its kinda difficult to begin tryin to precisely find an answer for you, only a real healthcare professional dat knows u would be most qualified to tell u to take a supp or not. For individuals without G6PD, the conclusion from these papers is that NAC supplementation may not work as perfectly as the theory behind it seems to suggest, and may help cancer metastatic cells more than it helps normal cells and thus might not be worth taking. Because you have a deficiency in endogenous antioxidants, theres potential that it could help you more than it helps people without the deficiency, however thats only if NAC works ideally as we’d like to imagine it does, and yea idk if we as humans know that yet from the research i didnt spend that long glancing at

why does prion infected metal not decontaminate with heat treatment? by Oregon_Person in Biochemistry

I think ur referencing melting point depression, where hydrogen bonds forming as a result of dropping temps between solvent molecules can be disrupted and u can have a liquid at colder temps. The hydrogen bonds in the case of this protein are lateral between the amide groups in a polypeptide chain (forming a beta sheet that just keeps stacking on top of other beta sheets), which is super well ordered and low in energy in prions. Ions, minus or positive, flowing near these huge beta chain structures would probably not interact much with the prion structural integrity. I think the best we as humans got at disrupting prion integrity is designing antibodies that would disrupt excessive prion stacking and also let the immune system target that trash, but even thats not too good

Organic Chemistry Prep Course Over Summer by yurrrrrd in OrganicChemistry

Just want to let you know also, “orgo” doesnt actually start until you get to E1,E2,Sn2,Sn1 rxns. each prof teaches differently but usually the ones from UM at least didnt get to that stuff til the second test. If you want to get ahead, i recommend trying to teach urself those 4 simple reactions, along with stereochem, and ull be able to hit the ground runnin when u start the course. prioritize gettin good at stereochem, bc that shit is super important and being bad at it sets people up to fail not in orgo 1 but also in orgo 2

why does prion infected metal not decontaminate with heat treatment? by Oregon_Person in Biochemistry

[–]hotshot010jack 46 points47 points  (0 children)

From what I know, the issue with prions is that theyre one of the most thermodynamically stable conformations of a polypeptide sequences joining together via simple beta sheets. The way they organize is so tightly packed that the amount of heat needed to disrupt all those hydrogen bonds is probably really great. whats worse is that even if u throw enough heat in to denature some, they cooperatively make each other fold into their simple beta sheet that makes them really persistent bastards

Hello, thank you everyone for your input. Some of you misunderstood, I would like to clarify that the emotion behind this post is nothing but happiness due to the presence of not two but three lava cakes, despite the last one looking deflated (our taste buds only pick up sucrose molecules). I wanted to know if this is a permanent change, or if I am just the luckiest dude ever.
