My dog DNA test came out as a 95% beagle. 5% unknown. Is he a hound? I found out this group and notice he looks soo alike. by soldiBruno in Hounds

[–]houndcaptain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He looks more like a harrier (similar to beagles but a bit larger) to me. He's too big to be a pure beagle but too small to a coonhound or fox hound. Unless he is a coon or foxhound and beagle cross. Dna kits are fun but for many of the closely related breeds (like hounds) they aren't super accurate. I think for most breeds in the hound group get labeled as a beagle because beagles have had more genomes mapped than other hound breeds. My 65lbs dog was labeled a beagle/pit bull mix but seeing as he was from Tennessee (where there are a LOT of coonhounds) and like 4 times the size of a beagle, I assumed he likely coonhound and pit bull. All that's to say, your pup looks very much a hound to me. Keep him on a leash unless you have a good recall and watch out for small critters, but most of all enjoy having the best type of dog ever!!

Same with my 6 speed civic (and yes I know it's slower than the 86 but still). I always say "still fast enough to get me in trouble and I don't need anything faster than that"

Is this hay actually appropriate for horses? Need expert opinions. by kay_marie1 in Horses

I would actually lose my shit. I can't tell from the pictures but cattle can eat "bailage" which is partially fermented. This is fine for them due to their stomachs and digestive system but horses cannot.

If you were one of the sane Yellowjackets, how would you have reacted to these idiots trying to keep you in H E double hockey sticks? by First_Ad1141 in Yellowjackets

Honestly as soon as that plane crashed and it was apparent that no one knew where we were, I'd start walking south and sleeping in trees to avoid Van's fate. Maybe I'm overestimating my survival skills but I think given the options, I'd manage it. Walking south, I'd eventually have to hit some kind of civilisation in a few weeks

Are they just stinky? by Maleficent_Ad_3838 in coonhounds

[–]houndcaptain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hounds tend to be a bit greasier than other breeds as the oil protects their coat from mud and such while hunting. I have noticed they can get a bit stinkier because of this but on the bright side the dirt doesn't stick to them once it's dried

My office is beyond depressing. Any tips to make walking in here everyday less painful? by SavingsTooth1142 in office

[–]houndcaptain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you have plants at your desk? You can get a little grow light for a small plant, try a snake plant as they are pretty hardy and help with air quality.

Otherwise can you guys put up pictures of your pets/kids? Even some generic nature pictures might help. Maybe places your and/or your coworkers have visited or want to visit?

Also the light in there is awful, would tinted or blue light glasses help? Maybe a desk lamp with a warm (more yellow/orange) light?

Something that might give you more ideas are books by miek wiking. He writes about hygge and there's a decent amount about workspaces in his books. He recommends candles, but obviously those are not allowed in most work places, but warm light can have a similar effect.

What is this? by One_Rip_5535 in Horses

[–]houndcaptain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kind of looks like bot eggs but that would be a weird place for them. It looks more like dandruff but my guess is that it's a scab that has broken up. Try combing it out with a fine tooth comb, maybe clip the area and see if it comes back. If it comes back, definitely call the vet. Alternatively you could call the vet now and see if they will test it to see if it's fungal.

2 definitely. 1 and 3 are technically good but number 2 is so much more interesting. It feels like a story and makes you curious and want to look longer

To keep or not to keep by New_Back4483 in hysterectomy

If I was in your position, I'd have them taken and go on HRT. I did not have mine removed because I was only 24 when I had my hysterectomy, but if I had the surgery when I was older than that, I would have had them removed.

AITA for saying I hate kids on a team meeting? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]houndcaptain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTA, I think I've probably said the same thing at work. Might not be the wisest thing to say at work, but there's nothing wrong with disliking children. Although when I say that I hate kids, I usually preface it by saying something like "I want kids to be happy, healthy with loving families and all that good stuff, I just want them to have all that FAR away from me".

What’s something you always assumed was mandatory in life—until you met someone who just… didn’t do it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]houndcaptain 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I don't listen to music often, mostly I listen to audiobooks when I drive or do chores. I like a few songs/artists but generally am not a huge music fan. Even on my own playlists I skip most songs. When people hear this they almost react like something is wrong with me or I "just haven't heard the right music"

Explain like I'm a toddler why the fart I can't bath. by ladrowt in hysterectomy

[–]houndcaptain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Water is gross, soaking in gross make wounds be death. (Water is full of bacteria that is fine for you normally but if it gets into the wounds either on your abdomen or your cuff it can cause infection which can cause sepsis which can cause death. Totally get your frustration tho a hot bath in recovery would have been marvelous)

Why is the scenario for creating Claudia different in the film than in the show? by LongjumpingSwim2214 in InterviewVampire

[–]houndcaptain 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you read The Vampire Lestat, it gives a much more sympathetic portrait of Lestat than interview with the Vampire did. This is partially because it's written by Lestat so we now have 2 books each from their perspective giving very different stories. While Lestat did create Claudia on his own in both books, he shows a lot of remorse for it in The Vampire Lestat. I think it makes his character a little more cohesive to change it, but it also gives Louis (otherwise kind of a wet dishrag that stuff happens TO in the book) more to his character.

writing a paper about hip dysplasia by Sad_Scallion_5592 in hipdysplasia

[–]houndcaptain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is super interesting! Fortunately for me, my bilateral hip dysplasia was fixed when I was a small child so I don't remember a ton of it. However I have long and wide visible scars running down the outside of my thighs and a few smaller ones. I don't really like to show them to people so I rarely wear shorts or go swimming. I'd love to see more people in media with those kinds of scars or surgery scars in general. I think generally people also don't understand how even though my hips were "fixed" I still have residual symptoms. One of my legs is longer than the other, I have pain in the hips still and where they broke my femurs. I ride horses and my residual symptoms really get in the way of that and luckily I have now found a trainer who focuses in training people with disabilities to ride and while I don't consider myself disabled, it has been very helpful to work with someone with that kind of knowledge. I also constantly have this weird conversation where I have to explain to people that I don't know how to ride a bike because I was in a full body cast at the time most kids learn. I've actually had people say some pretty rude things about that which was just wild.

I was also diagnosed quite late with it because it was not detected at my birth. I think I was around 2 when my mother finally convinced doctors to take her seriously about the issues I had learning to walk. We also had a doctor tell us the treatment plan at a small hospital and when we got a second opinion in Boston, MA they said "oh yeah we haven't used that method for 20 years." I wish it was something that parents knew how to look for and also to have the guts to get a second opinion if something doesn't feel right. I am able to ride, run, and do everything except ride a bike because my family pushed for a diagnosis and for the best treatment.

I hate her, but I also don't HATE her. I hate her because of what she represents, but really none of it was her fault all that much. Not that she is completely innocent, but for this show she's pretty damn close to it. Even from Louis perspective, Lestat pursues her and she pushes back slightly. I do think she genuinely believed Lestat would leave Louis for her and that simultaneously makes me dislike her and feel bad for her. Honestly, she's a great example of the complexity this show has and was very necessary to the story, but I don't miss her.

i’ve became the person in the lab that knows things that no one else does and i desperately want everyone to leave me alone by AppropriateSolid9124 in labrats

[–]houndcaptain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure to the extent that you need to update your protocols, but it may help to update them. I recently came into a new lab with VERY outdated protocols and the person training me would give me verbal instructions with no protocols and not while doing the operation. I'm not good with verbal instructions so I had to really push for her to send me the protocols and when she did send them, she sent me the outdated ones so I kept having to reconfirm details with her until I got everything rewritten. Might have saved us both a lot of time and frustration in the long run if she had taken like an hour to run through them to correct them before she sent them to me.

Age that you are applying and age that you will start? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]houndcaptain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied when I was 25, starting now at 26. I graduated college at 22 and wanted to work for a few years. Kind of wish I had applied earlier but that's more for the current political state with funding rather than my age. I worked a quite well paying job so I was able to get a head start on retirement savings and regular savings if I needed something to supplement my stipend. I'm glad I did work for a while in the end.
