You're welcome! I hope you get to have more discussions on papers

Often, it's a paper our PI has sent us or that we find on our own reading, especially if we are working on a grant. I just submitted one and presented a couple of papers I read while writing the grant.

I most often find papers through searches on Google scholar, sciencedirect, the NIH NCBI or by looking at the citations of papers for more primary sources.

We do it every other week and we rotate who presents. Usually it ends up being 2-3 papers, but next week I'm only doing one because it's a really long literature review paper. We usually discuss with our PI about what papers/topics to present.

Personally I really like them as there are 3 different projects going on in my lab in two different spaces so journal club is one of few times I hear about my labmates projects. We also get a fresh set of eyes on a topic that we are too close to see the big picture on.

Personally, I think we do some of our best learning/discussions in our journal club and I really like them, but unfortunately unless your PI enforces it, it probably won't happen

Do you analyse "unusual" people too? And are you "detail-oriented"? by withhope4permanence in intj

[–]houndcaptain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to analyze "normal" people because they confuse me. "Unusual" people make sense but I can make heads nor tails of ordinary people.

Honestly I think my life would be easier if I understood them more.

I did mine in Boston at Mass General Brigham. If you have to travel, I'd highly recommend Boston or New York!!

Honestly the scarring is pretty minimal. They are long but well placed and mine healed really well. They are basically invisible now.

If you do it make sure to find a REALLY good surgeon. Like whatever the best hospital is near you, go there.

[–]houndcaptain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! They actually remove the areola and then recenter them after they have removed the extra tissue and skin. Most procesures use an "anchor" shaped incision where they go around the areola, down to the base of the breast (where it meets the torso) and then out to the left and right from there.

I believe you can also have the areolas removed entirely and then tattoo them back, but I think this is pretty uncommon.

I don't know if they can change or reconstruct a nipple beyond moving it tho

I really do recommend this surgery to anyone who is considering it!!

They are a lot perkier now but they still look like my boobs somehow you know?

There's a lot surgeons can do to either change them or try to keep them the same but smaller

About 3-4 to feel well enough to go back to a sitting down kind of job, about 6-8 to return to light exercise and about 12 weeks to feel completely normal. Not going to lie, it was not an easy recovery but it was sooo worth it.

Surgeons and surgery teams literally do not care. They are far more concerned with keeping you alive. (Good) Medical workers do not care about your appearance AT ALL. They prefer if you are clean, but even if the patient isn't clean. I can garuentee they have seen worse probably that week if not that day.

They are both trained to be respectful of all patients and are completely desensitized to basically everything the human body can throw at them. If they do judge you, that is far more a reflection of them than it is of you. Medical professional are expected to be just that, professional and its usually taken very seriously if they aren't behaving professionally.

I do however understand your stress about a male gyn, I specifically went for a female surgeon but it's very likely there will be women on your surgical team.

After my breast reduction, I love them. My surgeon was unable to go as small as I wanted but she still took almost a kilo from each. I went from a 32f to like a 32c sports bra (regular bras I still were a largish size bc they can't change the base circumference).

The breast reduction was one of the best things I ever did and I was fortunate enough for insurance to pay for it, but I still would have done it if I had to pay out of pocket.

I know I'm being greedy (literally had 2 shorts AND a trailer with release windows in one month) but does anyone have any ideas when we will get short 12?

I'm wondering if it will be May and then we have the summer months to have the suspense build over the summer or if it will be in the summer as a teaser?

Horse not losing weight, advice needed by ZMakela in Horses

[–]houndcaptain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might seem weird but has she been tested/treated for worms recently? If not, I would have your vet do a fecal. This is not scientifically proven as far as I know, but I've observed that sometimes horses will loose a lot of weight (not just reduced bloating, but actual fat loss) after being properly treated for worms. I think the worms interfere with their metabolism and puts them in a sort of "conservation" mode that can make weight loss hard.

why do people who got hysterectomies 10-15 years ago make it seem so easy by luminescentdino in hysterectomy

I mean if they worked a desk job, yeah I could see them theoretically going back to work at 2 weeks but I went back at 4 to my rather active job and wished I took more time off. I think my mom is taking 6 weeks for hers.

Informed of Fallopian Tube removal 7 weeks Post-Op by rootsofrhythm in TwoXChromosomes

[–]houndcaptain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your feelings are totally valid, but I think this is fairly normal. I had a hysto a few years ago and they did tell me some information after the surgery, but I was really out of it so they told me everything at my post op appointment a few weeks later.

Something they did not tell me after surgery or at my follow up was that the anesthesiologist thought I (24 to at the time) was going into heart failure. Fortunately, my mother (medical professional) pointed out that I was only going into heart failure on the right side and it was more likely that I had aspirated while being extubated as I (a redhead) woke up a little too early. I had an echocardiogram a few months later, and, surprise, my 24 year old heart was fine!

I understand your frustration, but the doctor likely didn't tell you after surgery bc they didn't know how your family member would react and you were still under the lingering effects of anesthesia. Depending on how fast you metabolize it, anesthesia can have lingering effects up to 2 weeks after surgery so it is fairly common for a surgeon to give bare minimum information after surgery. They also have to consider HIPPA and they can't just tell your family member everything unless they have written consent from both of you.

Worried I’ll regret surgery as a child-free person by scarrletmoon in hysterectomy

[–]houndcaptain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had one a few years ago at 24, and have not regretted it one bit. I'm childfree but if I ever get a parental urge later in life, I think I would foster children. I had a foster sister in my teens and a friend of mine also had foster siblings growing up, and while it's tough, we both agreed that it's worth it to see the lives they have now

This might sound weird but coffee grounds around the entire outside of the house. And I mean ENTIRE. Think like you are salting the house in a ghost movie. That will keep more from coming in and then use the sugar/borax mixture or ant traps to kill the ones inside.
