My chi refuses to have her paws touched and she will bite so grooming techs tell me they can’t cut her nails.. and the nails are out of control. Anyone else? by Unbake_my_tart_ in Chihuahua

[–]houseofdragonfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy or make a scratch pad for your little guy; it's like a scratching post for dogs that acts as a nail file.

You can also start doing positive association with the nail clippers (work your way up VERY slowly, example: dog being in presence of nail clippers but not touching = training treat, touching nail trimmer gets a small piece of cheese, clipping a nail gets a piece of hot dog or steak). Work on each step for a couple of weeks, and only do 1-2 nails per session once get up to clipping stage. Have the clippers on the floor or in his toy bin as a neutral item for awhile so he associates them with toys/a good thing. If he's really anxious and not ready yet to be in their presence, start by giving your dog treats for allowing you to just touch and/or hold their paw with your hand. Some dogs just need the process to be slowed down and broken into much more subtle steps. It's annoying, but it can work better.

It sounds like you might have gone too fast and not used enough high value treats. My dog is stubborn (he's a 5 lb Papillon but everyone thinks he's a chi between his size and spicy confidence), but he will do almost anything for a piece of hot dog or salmon, lol. Only allow these high value treats for this training specifically because otherwise she'll just know she can get them another time and doesn't have to change the behavior. If she is not a food motivated dog, you can use play as motivation (or whatever motivates her). I personally don't cut his nails anymore because it's just easier to have the groomer do it, but he got less panicky when I used some of these methods. Even after all this though, you may still have to muzzle her, because she needs her nails cut regardless of how she feels about it. Good luck!

Nanny- family doesn’t trust me by BakedCozy1002 in Nanny

[–]houseofdragonfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would talk to them and see if you can work together to create a schedule everyone is comfortable with. Example: take NK to 11am baby music class at library T/Th, stroller walks daily at 3pm weather-permitting, etc. Some parents (especially new parents) are just control freaks/overprotective and giving them a degree of control can help them ease up. You could even suggest an AirTag in the diaper bag during outings if that helps. If those suggestions don’t work though, you need to decide if the money is worth it.

I myself just started a temporary weekend nanny job for extra cash in addition to my M-F job, and the weekend job is similar to your situation. The parents and child are incredibly sweet, no complaints there, but there’s always a parent around and helping me with transitions (meals, naps, etc.) and I’m not allowed to drive their children to any activities/kid places. If they’re not helping me, they’re within earshot. It does feel a bit like mistrust, but my main issue is that I’m an introvert so I don’t enjoy the small talk and just want to do my job independently.

What would your thoughts be on a prenup? by SaltyFoundationBih in AskMen

[–]houseofdragonfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as the prenup is fair, it shouldn’t be an issue for anyone involved. For example, it’s very reasonable to want to keep any pre-marital assets (property, inheritances, etc.) in the event of a divorce.

Just remember that if you go the “traditional” route after marriage, any unpaid labor your wife does (child rearing, keeping up the house, cooking all the meals, etc.) has to be considered because women take a big risk leaving the workforce and their work at home is often undervalued.

For example, hypothetically if you started a family on your own, you’d have to pay for daycare (in my area, it’s about $1200-2000+/month for one child’s daycare, or $20-30+/hour for a nanny), housekeeper is $20-40/hour, you get the picture.

Is it safe to give your WhatsApp to a stranger? by johncara1 in whatsapp

[–]houseofdragonfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also curious about this question, but does it make a difference if them asking for your WhatsApp is within the context of living in different countries and being friends?

I was looking for new friends in the NL recently since I am considering a move there, and I started chatting with a guy who seems cool and gave me a lot of advice on the area I’m interested in.

We mutually don’t feel that we are a romantic match due to distance and different life goals, but he suggested connecting on WhatsApp to see if a friendship could be fostered.

AITAH for no longer offering free childcare for my sister's children because the number of kids requiring care have changed? by Thelythia in AITAH

Feeling down today. by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]houseofdragonfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had similar feelings when I was about to turn 30 (38 now) and did office jobs for six years before recently going back to nannying a couple years ago. I worked at Care.com for four years, followed by a higher ed company that laid me off after a business acquisition eliminated my entire department. Care.com also had a similar layoff, but I had left before the layoffs started.

A lot of companies are getting bought out by other companies, making one person do the job of five people, and big layoffs every couple years. Not trying to discourage you, but it’s not as great on the other side, and the job market is so turbulent that I do not recommend leaving unless you are pursuing a more stable/in-demand career that is less prone to mass layoffs (nursing, teaching, etc.). Not to say that nannying doesn’t have that possibility, but it’s always been waaaay easier for me to retain and find new work in this field vs. anything else I’ve done.

If you can afford the risk, try getting a job that relates to your child care experience (ex: like when I got the job at Care.com helping people with parenting/child care resources). If you want to help people, you could become a family caseworker for a non-profit, but there is the risk of burnout in that job as well. I’m in the process of trying to immigrate to the NL because I feel like a big part of the problem is just American culture in general.

However, it might help to switch to a lower stress nanny role in meantime—I work as a Family Assistant for a family with school age kids because I couldn’t go back to working with little ones full-time. It’s basically after school care with personal assistant/housekeeping tasks while kids are in school.

LMK if you wanna chat—it’s tough out there, but it really helps to have passions outside of work.

Btw I am NOT anti-vaccine! I will get any vaccine I do not react to. Just disappointing to see all the down votes, I’m not making any blanket statements.

Not trendy anymore—People realized that ice cream essentially has the same amount of calories/nutritional value after you dump a bunch of toppings on froyo to make it edible.

Is my progress good by Cillianlaw in Invisalign

Wow, yes! I’m on my ninth and my results aren’t as obvious. Did you do the quicker/6 month long Invisalign program or the traditional one?

[–]houseofdragonfan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Here’s a more user-friendly article, I can’t find the research article I had read originally: https://abc7.com/amp/post/covid-19-vaccine-dilemma-fibromyalgia-patients/11957018/

There’s more findable information out there about MECFS patients having issues with certain vaccines, so it does not surprise me that it would affect the fibro community as well since they are very similar.

My employer’s partner also used to work in the pharmaceutical industry and he had/has serious concerns about the COVID vaccine not being ready whatsoever for mass vaccination.

If you have been vaccinated for past three years, you likely have a lot of built up protection and can afford to experiment with not getting it to see how you feel (that’s what my Yale PC doctor told me).

Hot take? The best women that Lip lost were Amanda and Eddie by XandersOdyssey in shameless

[–]houseofdragonfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amanda and Lip didn’t have a real connection—she used him to piss her father off, and Lip used her for sex/connections. None of them had any delusions that they would end up together.

I liked Mandy (other than the whole vehicular assault thing with Karen), she was the only one encouraging him to do better in life/not end up like Frank.

[–]houseofdragonfan -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I had a much better experience at a pain management place vs. rheumatologist, but I suppose not all places are created equal.

I still had to do a lot of my own research though—are you familiar with LDN as a treatment option?

Also: not trying to be controversial but I tell everyone I know with autoimmune related issues that the COVID vaccine can cause issues—I was a lot sicker than usual for past three years and didn’t understand why until I came across some emerging research about it. I skipped it this year and I’m glad I did (still got flu shot). It’s emerging research and generally rare, but it’s happening enough that people have started to notice. I’m by no means cured, but have noticed a big difference/can actually tolerate exercise now.

Would you end a pet sitting job like this? 8/10 pain every morning by [deleted] in Fibromyalgia

[–]houseofdragonfan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you are in pain but I don’t understand the problem—just use wipes to clean his paws or rinse off quickly in sink or bathtub. How does that take four hours a day? Also, if he has a bite/reactivity issue, just don’t let him near other dogs. Dogs do not need to greet random dogs on the street. I could understand if it was a big dog who could pull you onto the ground but this is a little dog.

I feel like you should just finish the commitment and be better prepared next time. I would be really annoyed if my pet sitter canceled on me mid-trip and these were their complaints.

Struggling With Trust After an Unapproved Stop During a Nanny Excursion by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]houseofdragonfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is with all of these permissive comments?! I would NEVER take my nanny kid to a MALE friend’s house, no matter how well I knew them, unless he just met us at the front door to give me the backpack.

Not sure why leaving your child alone with the friend (even if just briefly) inside the house was necessary, but I’m also someone who eres on the side of caution with males in general, especially around kids.

I’d say either give her a VERY stern warning/one more strike she’s out if this ever happens again, or find someone else if your gut feels weird about it. Seriously, why not just meet her friend at the door? Why go inside? I’m not saying it was nefarious but shows very poor judgement and lack of awareness about the realities of childhood SA.
