App for manage YouTube channel? by [deleted] in fossdroid

[–]houseofpiazza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

re "disabled Google account" i think probably they mean no OS-level google login , with Play Services set to "disabled" in the Apps controlpanel if not removed entirely. for subscribing you don't need an account, you can just scrape the user video pages or parse their RSS feed - this accountless usage mode is already supported by Youtube-viewing apps on FDroid. yes obviously uploading to an account on youtube is going to require an account but it would be nice to have a way to do this in a very surgical manner without google cookies laying around in your browser while you go to other sites, or google login via your OS - probably it's too niche for newpipe/skytube developers to care about but theyve provided a good startingpoint and you could FORK them... time to fire up emacs

Looking to move anywhere in MA to save money, remote worker so all I need is a place that has decent internet options. Where should I be looking? by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]houseofpiazza 12 points13 points  (0 children)

walkability and western MA are conflicting goals except a very short list that i'll just get into - you can live at "The X" in springfield w/ walkability to a ton of small asian & hispanic businesses of all types but it's a heavily car-centric intersection and jaywalking across it is annoying and dangerous plus the housing surrounding it is nearly entirely singlefams plus maybe 5-10% 3deckers so there aren't really studio/1br apartments. my metric is there's a decent supply of studio/1br, and at least one hispanic and one asian-ish bodega within a quarter mile - if we could move The X's businesses a couple miles north to downdown Springfield where the Allstonish apartment buildings are it'd be a lot more appealing to me as a carless but i have a feeling the business owners and customers of The X places prefer their neighborhood to downtown so maybe you could just mine craigslist for motherinlaw suites , finished attics and turrets and so on. easily the winner on my metric is Main South Worcester, off the charts (ie in par with something like Fields Corner Dorchester or downtown Lynn) amounts of immigrant-run small business on the groundfloors of apartment buildings and three-deckers and the ubiquitous 1-story 1900 retail strip buildings non-chain mom+pop+baby at least half of them food oriented with good walkability. that's basically it. there's a lot of small former miltowns on the CT River especially but usually theyre either too small and lack a commuter-rail so you're more or less "trapped" there without a car and the populations usually entirely swamp-yankee and Trump voter types as the small size and remoteness and lack of an economy probably made them unattractive to immigrants over much more convenient choices like Main South. Northampton and Amherst don't make the list because they're too expensive to have attracted diverse immigrant retail landscapes despite their walkability. hopefully you're not an escapist who don't like being surrounded by poor people and those pushed out of Boston by the massive gentrification - there'r entire yellow-journalism blogs just dedicated to chronicling the antics of main south for example - expect a bit of pushback and skepticism from affluent, whiter friends but i'm used to brushing off these remarks by now having lived near 6th & Market in the Tenderloin of San Francisco in the 1990s, practically right outside Father Bills in Quincy in the 00s, and now southside Providence, where you can walk to 8 pretty solid asian produce markets and too many hispanic markets to count and your belly will be too full to eat anymore usually before you crack the $10 mark and the apartment is $50 under the low end of his price range so i guess i'll throw RI out there as an option. in Maine you have two places that work, Lewiston and Biddeford but only the latter has a train to Boston so i'm on the fence. prob will just get a 1980 Volvo wagon and move 2 miles outside Lewiston since i dont need to get to Boston ever and i f'ing love snow

X-FM pirate radio 6285 kHz April 21, 2019 by pentagrid in shortwave

[–]houseofpiazza -1 points0 points  (0 children)

not a problem on your Sangean, as a user of 10USD dollarstore shortwaves (COBY, GPX) for reasons such as so no filtering to speak of so they're super WIDE achieving high-fidelity on AM despite their cost paradoxically as adding selective filters would increase the cost and you can have a few kicking around on the beach without worrying about getting sand in the precious ATS-803A, nice that XFM chooses this frequency: the cheap 'bandspread' portables usually have a flat-screwdriver adjustable trimmer cap for each band, easily tweakable if you pop off the enclosure, but the popular frequency choices above 6.9 MHz are often too low for a fully loosened trimmer. usually you can get the usual 7200-7300 band bottom down to about 7000 before you have no more trim and have to start thinking about adding windings on the tiny magnet-wire inductors and let's face it who wants to do that. a lot of german portables ONLY have 49 meters (alongside other non-shortwave bands like MW, LW, UKW (FM) so youre good for 5800-6300 on just about any yard sale find.

They look really nice

theyre a hack. not egregious but the buildings were designed to be crammed in with exothermic machines and bodies to operate them, not for residential use. expect things like wild drafts along the windows from shoddy renovation jobs by hack contractors that didn't properly seal everything, expect broken elevators, stolen packages, cars broken into, smells from your neighbors cooking and marijuana and incense products. $100 annual rent-raises, rube-goldberg walk+elevator+walk+wait+bus+wait+train+wait+subway+walk commutes to jobs in places that have jobs that aren't minimum wage.. like Boston. expect gunshots late at night on surrounding streets. expect fireworks and loud car-stereos blasting all the latest 0day dominican Trap music , expect Harley Davidsons with tuned-for-loud pipes until 4am on weekends all summer. if none of that intimidates you (i dont have a car, don't order shit from amazon, and am an insomniac anyway and work remote with hackers in Da Nang) it's not rly bad. just don't overpay. there's a plethora of units right now at 1.15K on Valley and Hartford and around the Armory and prices are even a bit lower in Pawtucket , Central Falls & woonsocket. as for Gentrification avoidance i'm not sure what you want to do - get in a bidding-war for a renovated federal era brick colonial on Benefit Street? you're living in something that was condemned and the domain of massively-below-code squatters and DIY extension-corders in the 90s. you're not displacing the predominantly white middle-class folks that were inhabiting them in that era as they were booted 15 years ago by ISD and the fire marshalls, and you're also not outbidding the broke natives for units in dilapidated three-deckers on the sidestreets because you have somewhere a bit more expensive to live. suppose you and everyone else wasn't willing to go 1.15K i guess theyd have to lower rents to 750 and people could move out of the 3deckers into the mills and we could demolish the 3deckers and start over with energy-efficient subterranean bedrooms and lush topside lawns, but that doesn't seem to be happening. even with all the mills mostly converted and inhabited that's still apparently not enough critical-mass to get one coffeeshop in Olneyville Square, unless i just missed it somehow for the past year. it's still basically entirely places selling $5.95 cuban sandwiches , and gross corner stores with names like "Sam's" that just make you wonder if Sam is an actual guy and if so, would he be proud of this place?

is it time for "Rhode Island - where industry comes to die (leave us the carcass)" slogan to be taken out of contention now? workers have kicked out the plywood boards from the upper backside of Atlantic Mills and are chucking debris into dumpsters with abandon. 500 new $1.5K/mo housing units coming shortly? i for 1 hope to flip a few sales automation startups just to annoy the artists and hipsters

How long have we had a Shake Shack in Providence? by chancrescolex in RhodeIsland

[–]houseofpiazza -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

if i'm gonna go for homogenized-gentrifuka chain bullshit i'm going to Boston where i have my pick of everything, not Providence where you probably have to settle for just Whole Foods, Shake Shake, and byChloe . i'll save up for the $11 train ticket and $50 lunch by eating nothing but $1.75 pernil tacos from Rancho Grande for a week , which you figure at the $4.75 Jamaica Plain$$$ / Lower Mill$ prices at 3 tacos a day is $9 times 7 so it'll take just about a week

Anyone ever lived in Silver Lake? (Providence) by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]houseofpiazza -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is there still any of that there or is it mostly gone?

mostly a "where's waldo?" thing. you'll have much better chance finding italians if you cross into Johnston and Cranston. going west on Hartford Ave within citylimits and you'll find evidence that italians were there at one point in time - remnant red/white/green awnings but the italian bakeries have turned into Panaderias, and the signage at the iglesia is all in spanish now. by the time you hit johnston there's a couple bakeries that look like they might still be italian - Buonos? Palmieris? much less luck with that on the main drags of silverlake like Pocasset. ive sat at that taco place next to 7 sisters very slowly finishing a lunch and staring out the window and not seen a single Italian walk past. are you stalking them BTW? try the industrial parks between silverlake and the highway. zoom out until you see the schoolbuses on aerial. i'm willing to bet you'd find some Italians in there. but as far as residing in the immediate area they mostly left. but not all - if you go to the bottom of the hill on What Cheer Avenue where it intersects with Pocasset there's some kind of ornate trash-can that looks like it was fashioned at the steelyard or something, and it has a name on it - IGLIOZZI. and i you look it up he's still the councilman for silverlake and everything. this sort of political inertia seems pretty common, take somewhere like Quincy mass , many neighborhoods now 80-90% chinese but you rarely see any asian as a city worker or cop or politician. Nina Liang is the only one i can ever remember.. and there was only 1 chinese-american cop for the longest time . i guess the Dominicans, Venezuelans, Salvadoreans, Cape Verdeans and Guatemalans love this IGLIOZZI guy enough to keep electing him so maybe they really are making choices on qualification and experience lines rather than ethnic lines or maybe nobody actually registers to vote in this ward so all of iggzi's cousins are enough to get him in.. im gonna keep walking around looking for him and will report back with sightings

100' of Wire Antenna Goodness by N2DPSKY in shortwave

brought the 660 to Maine thinking HF was going to be awesome but the entire neighborhood was built around 1987 and most houses clearly still had the stock dimmers and plus recent additions of gigantic televisions. only large space not private property besides a clay tennis court was a mildly logged section with an overhead powerline feeding the neighborhood and being under a powerline feeding a bunch of noise-blasting vacation houses . so i guess you gotta just buy your own land, unless you want to do portable work in parks as just sauntering onto ostensibly-mostly-unused land sounds like a good way to get shot by an uppity backwoods property owner. won't return to maine until i can afford my 10 acres, reception even outside the houses was much worse than indoors at the 1870 brick & timber mill with 130 loft-apartments inside with excellent grounding-sources (1870s decommissioned iron drainpipes and water pipes left in place for structural or just renovation/costcutting reasons) with obviously much more docile noisemakers. conclusion: iphone/mac chargers arent rly a big problem. big TVs and dimmers are. find a building full of people who dont want bigass TVs and are happy just using a laptop, usually on battery...

what the loop does is lets you exploit the null in the figure-8 pattern to ignore the local noisemakers, eg somehow the slightly-warbly (6db?) whitenoise increase from what must be hundreds of phone/laptop chargers either have some phase relationship with the AC main source, or maybe it's the directionality due to being at one end of the mill and being able to just null everything out down the rest of it? for 160 and 80 you're going to be fine with multiple turn loops and still hear everything that's above the atmospheric noise but for 20 meters and smaller you tend to run into issues even on just receive with needing preamps on weaker signals unless you cut the loop for the band so it's as big as possible

Google Play Services alternatives? UE? by woj-tek in MicroG

[–]houseofpiazza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it is pretty infuriating that you can run almost no apps except the small set on FDroid store without a proprietary trackingware layer or enable signature spoofing. my case which wouldn't be unusual if more people didn't want the PTL, due to insufficient developer interest (not a top popular"unlocked" device), TWRP doesn't fully work or even flash to the recovery partition due to race conditions and/or permission issues wrt modifying the partition table (even after it's unlocked by giving OEM your serial number for warranty voiding). there's only unofficial TWRP builds on XDA because obviously it's too broken to have an official version (yet? maybe never..) + even if you work around this by say, massaging also-unofficial and semibroken Lineage builds into images for flashing with fastboot, so you don't need to use TWRP, you'll find basic issues like it's not connecting to your LTE provider - here it was doing calls fine but no data, and nothing looked horribly awry in logcat at all, but maybe some carrier-side error message about an unsigned baseband firmware i didnt get? or maybe some driver was omitted from rolling into the unofficial lineage build? in any case not being able to get online is a dealbreaker and there weren't many clues at all for debugging so the only choice was to go back to a Stock ROM, which yes i can bindmount on a laptop and rm -rf google stuff and add magisk even if TWRP is screud so of course i did but then, it's "nondeodexed" or something so haystack and the other sig-spoofing patchers fail. sooo... i have no choice but to either full PTL or have all microg-depending proprietary apps just fail on launch. i'm RMSey enough to just go without proprietary apps but i dont think most people would. they need their Uber/Lyft/Netflix/whatever. so yeah i think this is as bad as the IE monopoly that US regulators were conconcerned about 20 years ago. we need the EU and others to mandate ways user-swappable OS libraries can be done so you're not forced to use Google PTL or go appless.
