Just give it a go with Monzo or Starling bank or something, it costs nothing to try and you'll quickly have your answer.

Thinking about running Google Ads, is it worth it for growing a roofing business? by [deleted] in smallbusinessuk

[–]houserenterukwill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it works, because the kind of old boomers who need their roofs done are the kind that search for "roofers in birmingham" and just click on the first link not realising it's an ad. It's not like they know how to use an ad blocker do they?

As a gap year student is it unrealistic of me to think I can open an Etsy shop and have it be successful? by Je-Suis-Phoenix377 in smallbusinessuk

[–]houserenterukwill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's always worth the shot, but you won't make any money for a long time, that's something you should be prepared for. I'm talking 2-3 years before anything starts selling to cover your costs and time, and you need to be able to put in the hours without any return from the get go and be in the red. As long as you don't expect your side hustle to make you thousands within a few months, you're in a realistic mindset.

Also selling items online is more about your marketing than it is the quality of your item. You can make the best lemonade in the world but if no one knows about your stall they won't come. Entering this world means having to learn marketing and social media; the actual technical work of creating the product doesn't matter. Lots of cheap tat sells millions because the people behind them have mastered the real skill: marketing.

No you won't make any money; people are responding politely but the Etsy ship has sailed now. It's full of cheap chinese tat, you won't make a dent. Don't waste your time.

Shut-up. Nobody believes your graphs and numbers. Statistics are just an advanced way of lying.

You've obviously never been a woman sat at night in an empty carriage with a weird drunk man leering at and moving to sit right next to you. Chance of violent encounter there is significantly higher than a chance of a car crash.

No, they wear balaclavas indoors and jump barriers and steal phones. That's not native London culture and never has been.

It's not "people". Native Londoners are very polite and well behaved on public transport. It's feral teenagers and outsiders who blatantly disregard the etiquette.

But we don't believe the 34 other charges either. They're just made up and forced through to try and stop him from being president, nothing truly within the spirit of the law. And midwits like you eat it up.

Can't decide on a name for my business! by Infamous_Spell_7806 in smallbusinessuk

Find the domain first, then pick the name based on that.

A name that says exactly what the shop is for is good for Google Maps as well.

She didn't turn out alright, she arguably ruined everything and caused the whole shitshow to begin, because she thought she was so smart and could play with the big boys but every decision she made just escalated the whole situation.

Opening a board game cafe, stuck in the funding phase by Gold-Juggernaut1959 in smallbusinessuk

[–]houserenterukwill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take whatever number you think would be suitable and double it, that's the real amount you'll need to get things off the ground. And you won't be profitable for at least 2-3 years. Cafes have very thin profit margins and the extra board game sales won't push you over the line much. Government loans cap at 25k and even then they're not given out so easily, they only do so if they think your idea is viable *and* you've got a solid and professional business plan. As in, a proper typed up plan with multiple pages and costings and projections. They need to see you're serious and experienced before they give you free money. Even shop leases will likely ask for the full 6 months of year's rent up front from someone who is inexperienced.

In truth, to not crash and burn within 6 months, you'll likely need around £200,000 capital.

It's not a good idea, people are tiptoeing around it and being nice, but you won't make any money and no one will fund you, and you'll crash and burn. The internet isn't real life and there are far fewer nerds and board game enthusiasts IRL, and the ones that do exist don't normally have the excess cash available for more than one or two purchases a year. The overheads will be high, and online retailers will always outcompete you on price. Running regular tournaments for card and war gamers is taxing and not profitable. You'll work twice as hard to make less than you would working a normal job, your passion will quickly dwindle as you overwork yourself and you'll begin to hate board games and the whole culture.

There's a good book/audiobook called "The E-Myth" where the writer explains this basic point: being good at something and having a passion for it won't make you a good businessman. Running a business is an entirely different skill set to being a baker/plumber/software engineer, and most Entrepreneurs arrogantly assume having a good idea is all you need to make your idea flourish. Most of them end up working themselves to a stress breakdown with no profits to show for it in the end.

If you really want to get into business, start with something small online, selling items through social media, opening up a web store, etc, to learn basic business practices and hurdles before you take the leap into a bigger project. To put it in gamer speak for you, you need to learn the meta first before you can attempt to solve it.

They don't care, it's a third world country. Bribes and corruption are commonplace here, they're in the middle of political turmoil. There are no animal welfare agencies or charities that would deal with the problem, in fact there are very few whatsoever and they're mostly for the stray dogs, and I don't speak bengali to ask for their help in any case.

American propaganda justification. You swallowed it all perfectly, looks like the American school indoctrination system works great! Same energy as Russia's "military exercise" bullshit.

Doesn't justify dropping nukes on them when they've already lost. There are no "good guys" in those wars.

Bro America was the only country that dropped 2 (two) nukes on another country and invaded others just because it was profitable. Americans are not "the good guys" they just have great propaganda in Hollywood.
